The Miseducation of Rajon Rondo

In the offseason, Danny Ainge and his goons made a bold decision. They decided to make Rajon Rondo their point guard sending away Delonte West in the Ray Allen deal and Sebastian Telfair in the KG deal. They could've easily put Rondo in any of those deals and went with Telfair or West but they felt that Rondo was going to be the guy to facilitate the offense. Now we're in the post season and they won't let him.

They decided that West wasn't the guy to lead the C's...

In the 10 postseason games I have watched (damn, 10 playoff games and we're halfway into the second round... tsk tsk), it's like every time the game goes to commercial, out goes Rondo and in goes Sam Cassell. Cassell was brought in via midseason signing, and his role was put very clear: he is the backup. So why does he get so much PT? Well, because he happened to win a 'ship during Jordan's vacation years, because he played with KG & Allen before, because he was really the missing piece to a team that had already won 50 games without him? No, it's because he was a standout on a team of sitdowns (no offense to all Clipper fans, yea all 6 of you). Personally, I saw no reason for Cassell there. He looks slow on defense, shoots way too much (and doesn't make any), and commits dumb fouls.

Anyone can look good on the Clippers...the C's made a mistake bringing in Cassell IMO

If you refer back to my "How Bout Them Celtics" post, you would remember me saying how Rondo/House, if not the most talented duo they complemented each other, their styles were very similar so you could interchange them and the offense doesn't lose a step, with Cassell its two different offenses. Rondo waits for the play to happen, Cassell forces the issue, which messes up the whole flow of the game.

Aside from that, it's killing Rondo's confidence. He's passing up open looks that he would have plenty of confidence taking before. He's like a different player now, who is definitely no longer the guy that made the Celtics management give up the guy they passed Brandon Roy for (inhale....exhale). They are treating him like a rookie, and he's playing like one.

Oh what could've been...
Oh what could've been...

In the playoffs, experience plays a role, but it's not everything. Look at the Hornets: they are playing like they have "been there and done it". Sometimes you just got to let the little guy get a chance. Cassell got his shot back in 1953; let Rondo have his. Cassell isn't trying to teach Rondo: he's trying to take over, and Doc is sitting on his hands thinking, "Hey, he's a seasoned vet. Let him do him," but that attitude is going to kill them eventually. Who do you think matches up better with a young, athletic Delonte West: the young athletic guy who played WITH him, or the 50 something alien guy (yes I had to throw an ugly joke in there its just the way it goes).

Couldn't resist....
Couldn't resist....

You made a decision now stick with it, Rondo helped get you there, let him see it through. He just might turn some heads.

Let him play...Let him play....Let him play...
Let him play...Let him play....Let him play...

I'm not sure West and Rondo are interchangeable in the trade...but I'm sure the celtics response when asked for West was "Sure, that'll work"...though they probably would have preferred to move Rondo and Keep West I would have too

I agree with Justin - it has been pretty agreed upon in NBA circles that Rondo is a blue-chipper, where the ceiling is a lot shorter on West.

Whoops I mean disagree, I think they were pretty steadfast on moving forward with Rondo all along.

It's not Cassell that's the issue, it's Doc Rivers. I believed when they signed him and still believe that Cassell could be a huge asset for this Celts team, but Rivers has such poor game management he can't fit Sam's round head into the square peg hole...

yea i agree Doc is the problem, my only fear is that its going to take a playoff collapse for him to get canned, and while i want him gone, i want banner 17 more

Weigh this out: If Doc gets you banner 17, you won't see the end of Doc until 2012. So what do you want more, a ring next season or the season after and no more Doc? Or 4 more years of this guy? I'll dump him like we should dump presidents after 1 term.

If you notice, Rondo is probably the worst road performer on the team for Boston. I give you game 6 of the Celtics/Hawks.

Cassell is a shooter, he doesn't fair much better actually, but they need a veteran to come off the bench instead of Rondo.

I've pretty much written off Boston as far as winning a title at this stage BTW. Last night's performance was a clincher.

Game 6, Cassell went 2/15 and actually played more minutes than Rondo, i knew Cleveland would take game 3....Game 4 will be key for the Celts

As far as I'm concerned, the Eastern Conference Title is the Pistons to lose. They won on the road despite being down by 15, while the Celtics....

Oh yeah, the almighty Pistons? They didn't win on the road when they were down 25 to the Magic in game 3 did they? Nobody looks that good right now, especially on the road. If the Celtics do the same thing tomorrow night as they (and the Pistons) did in game 3, then you can talk to me about writing them off.

This is just like when the Sox brought in Eric Gagne, they didnt need him they were first place with the best bullpen in the majors and he almost destroyed everything

When Rondo starts to suck, they bring in Cassell. That's why he's here. Sure, Cassell isn't playing that well right now either, but that happens. When it gets down to crunch time against the Pistons or the Spurs in the finals (yep), you'll be glad to have Sam Cassell.

I'm more upset with Doc killing House's confidence than Rondo's. House looks hurried and out of place in the game now, where as Rondo is still making great plays, and even trying to dunk on LeBron in transition. Although I'm not 100% thrilled with his style lately, Cassell has already come up big for us these playoffs (game 1 anyone?), and watch what happens to KG's confidence when Sam is on the floor. Late in the game, when Sam feeds it to KG on the post, KG is finally taking it to the hole like we've been asking him to. Take the good with the bad, that's all. Also, to say anything less than championship is a failure is complete and utter nonsense.

The Roy "what could have been" is not that simple. No Portland trade of Raef' longer contract for Ratliff's ending contract and there would be no trade for KG.

Plus if Portland had not made the trade they would have stayed at #4 instead of moving up to get Aldridge and taken Roy anyway according to Kevin Pritchard. Available at #6 might have been Aldridge, more likely Foye with Aldridge in Minny. So Portland would have had Roy anyway, plus the big ending contract, Telfair and other pieces instead of Jefferson to try for KG...

So what might have been is more likely Pierce and Allen playing with Jefferson and that #6 pick. Not bad at all but very likely no KG...

Not that I am disappointed, I am a blazers fan and think it worked well for both teams in the long run.
