ArmchairGM Burns: Midweek 5/6/08

By: Nate Gordon

If any of you have played Football (NFL and Regular) or Hockey at a high level you can understand the frustration of being a defensive or offensive specialist; especially for a goalkeeper. Outfitted in my yellow short sleeved jersey, black shorts and matching yellow socks, Fresh Wok emblazened in white across my chest, I patrolled my goalmouth as I do every Monday night at UC Santa Barbara’s Rob Field. However, unlike most nights where I make 5 or 6 routine saves in a victory, I faced a daunting task. Missing 6 starters, including 3 of 4 defenders and our attacking midfielder my team could only muster 1 goal in a 4-1 defeat. Beaten down, and suffering from a strawberry on my left hip and a kink in my neck I searched for relief anywhere I could find it. Called a couple of girls, no answer, called a couple of connects to any avail. I even came to ArmchairGM hoping to find something – and there it was….

When Cougar2000 and L.A.S.B. Agree…

It was bound to happen sooner or later, I suppose. I always assumed that although it seemed we were always on opposite sides of an opinion that we would eventually find a common ground. Finally, we have: Cougar and I both hate people associated with PETA.

Now using the word “Hate” is usually too strong of a description to employ to show your feelings of displeasure towards another. However, as a writer, I try to drive points home like a school bus driver so I’m more than happy to use hate. I can’t stand any sort of extremist group; it is my belief that most things can be sensibly worked out. However, when it comes to PETA, it’s their radical (and usually irrational) way or the high way.

So when I saw that Cougar had written PETA Kiss Our Ass (I changed the title to represent all of us against PETA) I felt like I did the first time my older brother let me come hang out with him and his friends. Finally, common ground to stand on with a former foe, I feel that Cougar was dead on with all of his points in his article and as a matter of fact, could go a lot further with it. But I won’t, it’s his article and I want it to shine on its own. So yes, I am endorsing it: go read Cougar’s article against the PETA Kooks – which sadly includes Pam Anderson, America’s favorite Canadian.

From the Mind That Brought You Apostrophe

The Burns Love Stalker is at it again with his critically acclaimed (I’m the one who acclaimed it) series Resident Interview. This time he is interviewing Justin Yost, who should be congratulated on earning his degree this month. I’m not sure what he was studying up there in Boston, but it was most likely a B.S. on how to ride the bandwagon. So head over there and enjoy two of ArmchairGM’s finest shoot the wind and have an interesting conversation. Resident Interview so far has been better in my opinion then both Meet the Users and Hanging with the Old Heads, although I enjoy them as well.

L.A. Lakers #2 NBA Franchise All-Time

The Third Degree: The Kobe Lovefest Continues

The more people find stupid reasons to hate on Kobe Bryant, the more I wish to put him on a pedestal and talk about his greatness. I really can’t help it, whatever it is that makes people want to hate on Kobe Bryant, the opposite makes me want to do what I do. The most notorious Kobe Bryant hater on ArmchairGM is also AGM’s most notorious user The Great ManRays. We already know that everything Manny says is true, and when it isn’t, there are great Hillary Clinton-ish reasons to discount the mistake. So therefore, Manny (and two or three idiots I heard on ESPN radio today) would like to label the 2008 NBA MVP as overrated. I have never heard an argument against Kobe’s game outside of questionable shot selection and the occasional complaint about his amount of turnovers (which shouldn’t be surprising considering he touches the ball more than any other non-point guard in the league.) The shot selection argument has been non-existent this season and has been replaced with jabs at Bryant’s character. However, Manny let his personal hate go too far and I have a beef with this comment:

“… and no one likes him because he's a fake, a man without character, and a two-faced, schizophrenic snake tongued liar. He tries to be this imaginary persona he wishes he was, but he doesn't even know who he really is - that's why people in LA love him - he's just as fake as they are.”

First off, you sound like a screenwriter who is pissed because he never sold a script in Hollywood; the petulance in your tone is almost sicking. He is fake? What is fake about Kobe? I’ve seen the man play 3 times live, he’s more real then the shirt I’m wearing. And while I can’t speak to his credit cards, but I assume his American Express Black card is his own. Secondly, your claims of Kobe being “a man without character” are pretty weak. He never raped anyone, he did commit adultery; and while that is a bad thing, it’s hardly uncommon in professional sports. I would even go to say it’s more common than uncommon. Adultery is only held against players if the fan doesn’t like them; if Amare was a cheater, there would “be a good reason”. Although I can’t say Kobe isn’t a liar, schizophrenic is more then inane.

From Manny Stiles, it is funny that Kobe is being called a man with “an imaginary persona he wishes he was but doesn’t even know who he really is”. The mirror is a hard place to look some days.

Oh, and to top it off he gave the entire city of LA a big Fack You with: “That’s why people in LA love him – he’s just as fake as they are” Wow Manny, I had no idea you felt so strongly about me, my city and my people. I knew you had a “stepson” complex when it comes to L.A. because you’re a Phoenix sports fan, but never have I heard such a jaded view of Kobe Bryant. So I have a bunch of hateful words from someone who needs somewhere to direct their disdain for their own situation, but can’t come up with real reasons to discount Bryant. This also, isn’t uncommon, it comes with being a superstar in the second biggest market in the nation.

The body of work is there, the man owned up to his mistakes this season and gave due credit to his teammates for their contributions, and he picks up the dinner tab whenever he goes out (and with whomever). He’s earned this MVP award and no regular Joe sitting at home butthurt because his team is playing golf three rounds before he thought (and one round before I told him they would be) is pissed off because the best keeps getting better. Keep hating on us who are at the top in L.A. – it’s what everyone below us does when they find out they couldn’t cut it in this town. True Story.

Oh and one more note on Kobe: Everyone has forgotten that he has played half of the season with no tendons or ligaments connecting his right pinky to his hand. Never missed a game with the injury and increased his production.

@ KD - Having your fingers taped together is more then uncomfortable, it's almost unbareable playing basketball. When you grip a basketball your fingers automatically attempt to spread out across the ball. It's not like it's the end of the world, but he has had to make several adjustments to make sure it hasn't hindered his performance. A tapped finger when I played club ball in high school would kill my shot.

LA you're losing this argument - my wife - a woman and college point guard - even explained how many times she played with a broken pinky and how it doesn't affect your play at all. She also thinks Kobe is a punk.

What is fake about that? If anything Kobe is more then real:

Kobe was fed up, Mitch Kupcheck and Jim Buss promised him in '04 that they would rebuild within two seasons and be competitive again. They put Smush Parker, Luke Walton, Lamar Odom and Kwame Brown and 3 rookies/2nd year players as the bench. That wasn't what they said they would do. He asked if they would make a move - front office said No. So he let his emotion get the best of the situation and he cried out to the media.

He's admitted that it didn't go how he wished and that he let his emotion pull the situation out of control. But Kobe NEVER WANTED OUT OF LA. Wanting to leave and saying "if your going to break your promise I don't want to be with you anymore" are two very different things. All in all it worked out like we wanted it to, and how Kobe wanted it to. So unless you take the situation out of context or without the whole story, I don't see the issue.

NG, Call me what you want, but blaming others usually portrays only a sense of your own personal guilts.

I didn't blame Kobe of anything - I explained him.

I've known people who knew Kobe since he was in High School in Lower Merion. You forget that we trampled the same grounds in Pa, and how he would come to Temple to run pickup games with Eddie Jones, Ric Brunson and Aaron McKie - three guys I knew well from sharing classes and living on the same floors in the JHP dorms.

I know things about Kobe most people don't know or have forgotten. I have heard things about him I don't want to and WON'T repeat.

He has ALWAYS been fake. He was fake with his Mom and Dad, he is fake with his wife, he is fake with Phil Jackson and he's always been fake to his teammates. He pretends to be what he thinks everyone wants of him and doesn't know how to make up his own mind because he doesn't know who he is!

He claims to be from "Philly" like a kid in Bel Air could claim to be from Watts. His Dad was a baller and Kobe has a sense of self entitlement that is unprecedented. He thinks of himself as a musician (bust that album out, LASB) and as an Italian - he only spent a few years there. He tried to play the Hollywood role - "dating" Brandy, schmoozing with the celebs - and WHO has his back??

He never had a chance to be a normal kid and cocooned himself in playing basketball and imitating MJ even down to the facial expressions and fist pumps. He got a motorcycle because MJ loves them. He only knows basketball and the result has left him with ZERO social skills...

I'm sorry you can't see the fake for what he tries to be. Is he a tremendous basketball talent? Absolutely. Would I ever want my kid to emulate him? Hell no.

BTW - Katie Farber WASN'T the first time he was caught cheating on his wife, either.

He wasn't MVP this season - a season in which he demanded to be traded. A season in which his "#1 seed" team won ONLY 57 games -57 wins in most seasons would be a 4-6 seed. He was a poor shooter and a turnover machine. His teammates did not improve, he GOT BETTER TEAMMATES!

And if you DON'T think Southern California is the capital of fake, then I can't help you!

SSR - how many games of basketball have you played in your life?

Do you understand the game? Does ESPN form all of you opinions?

Chris Paul was MVP hands down. He made David West and Tyson Chandler into stars. He led the league in APG AND SPG. He had less TOs than Kobe - point guards handle the ball more than - and thus have more opportunities to turn the ball over -than shooting guards like Kobe.

Paul scored 7 less PPG than Kobe yet had how many more assists per game? 6!! Assists count for at least two points EACH time, so that's 5 more points Paul was responsible for per game. Kobe, a much taller player - 6-7 inches - than Paul only had two? more rebounds per game...

The Hornets were NOT supposed to make the playoffs - nor did they add a Pau Gasol - but were top seed most of the season in a MUCH tougher division - NEED I REMIND YOU - the Hornets won a division with the Spurs, Mavs and Rockets.

Paul shot better FG, 3PT and FT% than Kobe.

BTW - the Lakers only won more game than the Hornets

Yes Manny, of course the regular cheapshot.

I've played dozens of basketball games, I understand everything (save for the weird NBA rules).

Chris Paul had 2.4 turnovers, Bryant had 2.5, that's not a major difference.

You want to know why assists are flawed? Because you don't get any if your teammate doesn't score! What is Kobe supposed to do? Kobe haters bash him if he passes the ball instead of taking over since he is the supposed leader of the game.

Hey, in the final week of the NBA regular season, the Lakers won out, the Hornets did not. What happened there?

Chris Paul probably should've gotten the award, but as I said, I think there was more emotions involved than stats. Kobe will never win one if he failed this season. Paul is in his 3rd year in the league, he'll win some, he is a great player, but the voters clearly went for "he never won one" than "he is a better player".

If I can't find a Center worthy of my top "fantasy draft" pick then I go with the best PG on the board. Those are always the two positions you build a franchise around. So Manny's question of if I would build my team around Kobe is moot. Because I would NEVER build around a SG. That's just me playing Basketball GM. So yes, if you consider Michael Beasley a PF then I pick Rose over Beasley.

He is not overrated. Look at his numbers, look at what he has accomplished. The Lakers won 3 titles only because Shaq was there is what he's saying.

He is taking away EVERYTHING from Kobe because of the selfishness factor. Have you seen his numbers throughout his career? Consistent across the board after his first 2 seasons in the league.

His shots went DOWN this season and had a better three point percentage this season than last year, and 2nd highest in his career.

Kobe started EVERY game this season, and he has put up productive numbers, albeit not as impressive as Paul.

Kobe had a career high in rebounds (517), 28 more assists (413 to 441), 40 more steals (111 to 151), and he only had 2 more turnovers this season.

Is he MVP worthy? Maybe not ahead of Paul, but calling him overrated is absolutely ridiculous.

What happens on the field of play is my concern. And whether I like Kobe or not doesn't shade my view of him winning. He's had better years than this and not won, don't you agree? He won because the Laker were better, and the Lakers were better because of Gasol and Fisher and Farmar, not because Kobe was better.

The Hornets were clearly better because of Paul. The Celtics were clearly better because of KG. Kobe was a sympathetic choice. He was not the correct choice.
