The Hoch’s Nest: Who’s in your 5? Part 1

No real news in the Seahawks world today, so why not discuss the history of the team?
Across the web and print media you can see lists of “best of” or “top players” from each professional sports league. The writers take a subjective look at what player they think leads the pack when it comes to the “best”.
That’s what they get paid for, right? Well, I am going to try and do it based on stats. The problem that I come across is that when you are basing it on stats you have to get subjective when comparing positions. I mean a Punter’s stats are going to say different things then a Defensive Tackle.
I will take the stats and try to decide on the Top-5 Seahawks of all-time. There will be some bias and some personal views on each of these, but it will be mainly based on stats.
What I am looking at: Position specific stats (yards, tackles, tds, etc) Non-position specific stats (years, pro-bowls, etc)
I will start out with a list of players and whittle them down. The list (made up by Ben, D-Zach, Dan KP, Megan KP, Joe, Jacob and I): Steve Largent, Jim Zorn, Dave Brown, Warren Moon, Joey Galloway, Ricky Watters, Cortez Kennedy, Lofa Tatupu, Curt Warner, Kenny Easley, Matt Hasselbeck, Jacob Green, Brian Blades, Chris Warren, Michael Sinclair, Sam Adams, Shawn Springs, Walter Jones, Itula Mili, Shaun Alexander, Steve Hutchinson, Dave Krieg, Sherman Smith, Mack Strong, Bobby Engram
The logical start would be to break it into positions before shaving it down, but I don’t want an All-Star team. If I end up with three guys from the same position I will be fine as long as the best is named.
Four players who donned a Seahawks uniform are in the Hall of Fame, however only one of them was with the team for longer then two years: Steve Largent. So for that purpose I will need to take Warren Moon off the list. He is a great broadcaster for the team and is a local boy, but his two seasons on the Roster are not what enshrined him. ( Carl Eller and Franco Harris were the other 2 HOFers.)
Going by that method I have to take Lofa Tatupu off. He is a great guy, and an amazing player, but not yet able to be on the list. Ten years from now we can discuss it and he may crack the list.
Sam Adams went to the Pro Bowl 3 times, all after leaving the team so he is off. Shawn Springs, Joey Galloway and Steve Hutchinson were great players who left in their prime and succeeded after they left. Itula Mili put in ten years for the Hawks, but was a consistently good player, not great. So he gets scratched.
This is the point where I give you a lot of numbers for the guys we have left:
Steve Largent (WR): 819 receptions, 13,089 yards, 101 TDs, 7x Pro Bowl selection, 14 Seasons with the team
Jim Zorn (QB): 21,115 yards, 111 TDs, 1x All-Pro (’78), Team's first QB, QB Rating of 67.3, 9 Seasons with the team
Dave Brown (DB): 62 INT, 5 TDs, 1 Pro Bowl, 2x All-Pro ('84,'85), Seahawks all-time INT leader with 50, 11 Seasons with the team
Ricky Watters (RB): 10,643 yards, 78 TDs, 5x Pro Bowl selection, 3x All-Pro ('94-96), 4 Seasons with the team
Cortez Kennedy (DT): 667 Tackles, 58 sacks, 3 INTs, 7x Pro Bowl selection, 1992 Defensive POY, 11 seasons with the team
Curt Warner (RB): 6,844 yards, 56 TDs, 3x Pro Bowl selection, 4x All-Pro ('83,'85,'86,'87), 7 seasons with the team
Kenny Easley (S): 32 INT, 3 TDs, 5x Pro Bowl selection, 1984 Defensive POY, 7 seasons with Hawks
Matt Hasselbeck* (QB): 22,333 yards, 142 TDs, 3x Pro Bowl selection, 1x All-Pro ('05), QB Rating of 86.2, 7 Seasons with the team
Jacob Green (DE): 97.5 sacks, 3 INTs, 2 TDs, 2x Pro Bowl selection, Seahawks all-time sack leader with 97.5, 13 seasons with team
Brian Blades (WR): 581 Receptions, 7,620 yards, 34 TDs, 1x Pro Bowl selection, 1x All-Pro ('89), 11 seasons with team
Chris Warren (RB): 7,696 yards, 52 TDs, 3x Pro Bowl selection, 7 seasons with team
Michael Sinclair (DE): 73.5 Sacks, 144 games in 12 seasons, 3x Pro Bowl selection, 3x All-Pro, 11 seasons with team
Walter Jones* (OT): 8x Pro Bowl selection, 7x All-Pro ('01-'07), 168 games played, 11 seasons with team
Shaun Alexander* (RB): 9,429 yards, 100TDs, 3x Pro Bowl, 2x All-Pro ('04,'05), 2005 AP NFL MVP, 2005 Offensive POY, 8 seasons with team
Dave Krieg (QB): 38,147 yards, 261 TDs, 3x Pro Bowler, ranks among the all-time top 15 in most passing categories, 11 seasons with team, Seahawks record holder in pass yards, attempts, completions.
Sherman Smith (RB): 3,520 yards, 28 TDs, 1x All-Pro, 7 seasons with team
Mack Strong (FB): 90 yards, 5 TDs, 2x Pro Bowl Selection, 1x All-Pro ('05), 14 Seasons with team, 10x lead blocker for a 1,000+ yard back
Bobby Engram* (WR): 598 Receptions, 7,201 yards, 35 TDs, 7 seasons with team
This is the point where I start having trouble because I think each of these players did something for the team. Also, as I have gone through this I have realized that there are 7-10 guys that should be on this roster.
So, this is where it starts. It will end this afternoon with my top-5.
