I have dabbled in sportswriting over the years (1991-1997, and again in 2007), enjoying two stints covering (stringing) High School sports for my local newspaper in South Jersey. That was a great experience and also a great deal of fun.

The Browns - The Mistake By The Lake...?

What's going on here? It's one thing to correctly re-sign Romeo Crennel. It's okay with me to let Brady Quinn cool his heels in a backup role. But signing Donte Stallworth!?!? Could someone in Cleveland actually have a clue?

I got used to Cleveland being a tough, but winnable, game for the Steelers. They always played the Steelers well, whether they were good or bad...Remember their return season? Pittsburgh whipped them 43-0 in the first game, then lost 17-13 in the second. I respect Cleveland as a Steelers opponent - that was all well and good. But after a close game in the second matchup last year, and a near playoff appearance for the Browns, something is up.

Derek Anderson already had Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow Jr. Now the Steelers have to figure out how to defend against three pretty good receivers? I think I liked it better when the Browns were "The Mistake By The Lake."

I wonder why the Eagles didn't sign Stallworth? That would have been okay. They could sure use him now that the Randy Moss thing fell through...

Anyway, I long for the days when Belichick was the Browns coach and he was losing three games a year to the Steelers. Who'd have thought that a disciple of his would be doing a better job with the same team?

They are headed in the right direction, and fast. Some upgrades on defense wouldn't be bad though.

That is true - they could use some help on D. But then, so can the Steelers and Bengals. And the Ravens can use some help on O. Gotta love the AFC North. Looks like it'll be a great season.

Despite my innate need to hate any team that is a rival of the Steelers...I must admit that I am a fan of Derek Anderson as well. Interesting that the Browns had no QB two years ago and now they have two good ones. Too bad one will have to go.

Do they really have two good ones? Dumping Anderson at any point would be a very bad move. He's a sure thing and I don't think Quinn will be a star.

Cleveland was one or two wins away from post season. To even consider getting rid of Anderson is not only a bad move, it's like cutting your own throat. Quinn doesn't have the experience and needs to wait another year.

Cincinnati did the same thing with Kitna-Palmer and Brees-Rivers were pretty much the same situation. They both worked out in different ways. Palmer ended up being really good, but the team was mediocre. Rivers ended up being really mediocre, but the team was good. It really all depends on how they think Quinn is developing, but from what I saw of him in college, especially in big games, I don't think he has Palmer type talent, and I don't think this team is as good as Rivers' Chargers. In other words, "ya, i agree".

The Browns have made some good moves, signing Romeo and also signing Anderson was a great move. Last year was a peak year for him, but he is still better than Quinn. However they over paid for Stallworth. He had an okay year with NE and has never proven himself as a #1 wideout.

But he's not a #1 BPB...he's second fiddle to Edwards...which looks like a nice combo to me... if last year was a peak though, i'd pass on him...

True he will only be a 2 in Cleveland, but I just feel like Stallworth has too much of a habit of allowing himself to fade into obscurity when he is not the top dog, look at him this past season. Making some nice catches is a lot easier when you have the NFL's 1 and 2 receiver ahead of ya.

I must say that I think the Browns should be the favorite to win that division with their recent acquisition of some sick defensive tackles.

you know, i agree, i think they've improved their defense...but you always have to wonder about teams built through FA acquisitions...its a big gamble... But given their draft stragegy (not drafting on the first day), this will have to do...

I do agree with Jut that teams built through free agency are always a gamble but I don't feel that way about the Browns. I think that they used the offseason the way you are supposed to, to make important upgrades at the few positions you need.

I think it was hard for crennel to get that team over to a 3-4...which made the defense an issue. His offensive rebuilding came to fruition last year... I believe you're right, this is the move to get them over the hump...but you gotta wonder how this will handicap their future...

You do have to worry about that to some degree being that they have gotten rid of a lot of draft picks but the fact of the matter is that they are not that old of a team. They have a lot of young players at talent positions all over the place so I think they can sacrifice one half of a draft for a great improvement to their team.

How come I always forget about the Browns? Seriously, they are the last time that would ever cross my mind when thinking about football teams. Why is that? Anyone else feel that way?

Probably because they went into hibernation for a couple years and have not been very relevant since they came back.

They've needed a logo for a long time. At least in the Brian Sipe days, they had "Browns" on the helmet. Not much, but better than nothing...and better than Cincy's stripes. But not better than the logo on one side mojo the Steelers have going.

I think they need to stop being called the browns and be called the oranges. Or make their helmets brown.

You can't be a cool team without a cool logo. I'm going to make a locker room discussion on this and let's come up with a great name and logo.

While the Oranges would be an interesting name (people might think they're from New Jersey) the name Browns needs to stick. They just need to come up with a logo. Of course, Paul Brown invented just about everything else in modern football, but he didn't seem worried about a logo for some reason...

That's not such a bad idea. The Dawg Pound was legendary back in the days of the original Browns team. They could put the word "Dawg" on the helmet and hold a contest for the fans to design the dog logo.

The browns have never had "BROWNS" on their helmets. That was the "BENGALS". Winslow, Edwards,Thomas,Vickers,Pontbriand,A. Davis,D.Jackson,Wimbley,Jones,Pool,Wright,MacDonald,Cribs,Chaun Thompson,J. Harrison. All aquired via the draft and contributing.Add to that Brady Quin(who I believe will be the starter by the end of this season) and you can see that this team has been built through the draft. Besides they weren't going to get anything close to what they got in this years draft in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. In Phil We Trust!!

I love the Brownie Elf, but I like our helmets and uniforms the way they are. I'm a fan of tradition and old school values and our mostly unchanged uniforms seem representative of those ideals to me. Probably doesn't really mean anything though. Would want the elf if anything.

I think I'd have to agree with you about the tradition. I wouldn't want them to put the Steelers logo on both sides of the helmet for the same reason.
