Tecmo-izing The Super Bowl

Are you tired of the two-week-long Super Bowl hypefest? Don't care who Tom Brady brought flowers to, or what he was wearing on his foot? Do you just wish they would play the freakin' game already? You do? Glad to hear it, because I'm going to run a COM-vs-COM sim of the game ahead of time using Tecmo Super Bowl. In all of its 8-bit glory, you can thrill to the game before the game -- and best of all, no sycophantic media day, no incessant ESPN overanalysis, no lame halftime shows... oh, wait, this is Tecmo. There are lame halftime shows. But other than that, it's pure football action! Are you ready for Tecmo Super Bowl XLII? I know I am!

The usual pregame business:

  • For all of those who have been asking, the basic version of the rosters I'm using can be found here, and you need an emulator to play the ROM, so pick up Nestopia here.
  • Again, thanks be to Greg the Ex-'Burgher, for originally doing something like this two years ago, and for introducing me to the wonderful world of the TSB Repository.
  • Also, a special shout-out to The Globe for continually linking to these articles -- it's nice to know people are enjoying the sims!

Okay, it's finally time for the Super Bowl. As we all know by now, Tecmo called both conference championship games correctly, including Eil and the Giants' big upset at Lambeau... But will it predict the winner in the biggest game of them all? Well, for each game I'll tell you what Tecmo's simulated score was, and also what I think the outcome will be -- as always, I make no guarantees as to the accuracy of either. Accompanying each game is the "Matchup Breakdown" chart, which is based on a percentile ranking of each team using Football Outsiders' DVOA metric -- remember, it is a measure of a team's real-life strengths and weaknesses, and has nothing to do with Tecmo per se. But I thought it would be cool to include nonetheless. Enjoy the Super Bowl, and I'll warn you, it's the most epic game ever. Seriously.

I better come clean....the Raiders actually won every game first time, I just did it over to make it so that they sucked.

Yeah, you caught me... (KIDDING!) Seriously, though, this was the only sim I did, and when Osi recovered that fumble in the end zone, I thought it was over. But just like in real life, these Pats refuse to lose. I was literally jumping up and down when Faulk scored the go-ahead TD. What a fantastic game of Tecmo, and a fitting end to the season... (Oh, wait, there's still a real game left to be played! But how could the real version possibly stack up against this sim?)

No they don't. This is an emulator with modern rosters, but even in the old TSB they weren't that great because their offense was one-dimensional.

I know Real-life Coughlin is probably going to get a big extension and all, but no matter what Tecmo Coughlin did to reach the Tecmo Superbowl, Tecmo Coughlin should be Tecmo-fired for calling a run play on 4 and 3.

Comment of the day is at Deadspin:
I've been saying this all along, for the Giants to win they must establish a pass rush by calling the exact same play as the Patriots. If they can do this, then Brady won't be able to do what he does best which is drop back 40 yards and throw to Moss deep.

My girlfriend actually mocked me relentlessly throughout this entire process... But deep down, I like to think she understands the earth-shattering relevance of Tecmo Super Bowl. I mean, ask any guy between the ages of 20 and 35, they'll tell you how important that game is... Besides, she wasted an hour of her life watching the State of the Union Address last night, what's that all about?

And as we all know, Canadian football is the only proper football. Nice sim, and seriously, who dropped that pass for Giants on their last drive? Also, I can definitely see the Pats running plays with 10 seconds left and the game in hand, score-running-up-bastards!

I think the week off is a good opportunity for teams to get players healthy to ensure the most competetive game. Although it gives great strategists like the Pats a chance to completely dismantle the Giants on film.
