Tannenbaum Has the Right Idea

Mike Tannenbaum has the right idea this week in his plans for Chad Pennington. He said this week that he expects Chad to be back for the 2008 season. The premise is that the economics are that good with the cap right now that he won't have to force Chad into a paycut. I believe that the best plan for the New York Jets would be to keep Chad Pennington, for a few reasons.

For one, Kellen Clemens did not exactly set the world on fire. After taking over for Chad Pennington mid-year, he looked nervous in the pocket, and consistently made poor decisions. Yes I know, he has a better arm that Chad Pennington. He can run a little bit. A strong arm and mobility are not everything. You have to know where to go with the football on every play. Whether you are a Chad backer or not, he knows where to go with the football. He completes 65-70 percent of his passes all the time.

Secondly, you need the veteran presence as a backup. Even if you tell me you have seen enough and that Kellen Clemens is your starter next year, who do you want behind him instead? Jeff Brohm? Sage Rosenfeld? Brian Griese? Some other retread? I don't think so. You want someone on the bench that knows the system, knows the team, and knows how to lead this team and Chad is the presence that you want. Unless you could acquire a guy like Derek Anderson, you should keep it as it is.

Chad may want to be a starter, and GM Mike Tannenbaum did state that he would listen to any offers that people call him with. However, he is planning to have Chad in camp for 2008, and that is the correct way to go.

This makes sense, CP10 is a proven QB in the system and will work hard and keep his mouth shut. It's a nice failsafe at the right price if Clemmens implodes next season. I might be wrong, if so I'm sorry, but I think Anderson is a restricted free agent which would mean that if a team other then the Browns wants him it will cost them draft pick compenstaion, as high as 1 1st round and 1 3rd round pick. So the price to aquire him would be big, and he was to be fair, no world beater and showed some clear flaws in his game over the season.

So, I guess we know now what the Jets will be looking for with that sixth pick in the draft. Not, a quarterback obviously. -Kwass

Considering the Jets' picks in previous drafts, I'd imagine it will be the wrong person overall. IE - Ken O'Brien, Brad Baxter, Blair Thomas...or just another linebacker. They love having a massive linebacker core.

Chad Pennington should be the starter for the Jets. He's earned it plain and simple. There doesn't seem to be any residual problems from surgery on his throwing shoulder so there are no excuses. Pennington needs to be told that he is the starter no matter what. No demotions or anything held over his head. The coaches need to say " you are our leader, win or lose". Pennington has always had potential greatness in his future. The Jets need to work on the O-line and improve skill-position players on offense and defense. Ferguson, Mangold, Hobson and Vilma are solid pieces to the puzzle.

I've always been a fan of Pennington whose 86 rating this past year did not warrant being benched in favor of Clemens and his miniscule 61. He kept them close in the second Patriots game this season and proved in '06 he still can lead a team to the playoffs, which he has done every year since 02 with the exclusion of years he was hurt and replaced by lower caliber QBs such as Brooks Bollinger.

The Jets seemed to be in such a state of indecision and flux during last season that I can't even remember them really playing at all. All I remember hearing about the Jets in 07 is SpyGate and who's gonna start Kellen or Chad.
