Tampergate?: Niners Lose 5th Round Pick

Goodell Castro is at it again, this time its the San Francisco 49ers that has come under fire. The Niners have forfeited their 5th round pick in next months draft as well as having to switch their 3rd round picks with the Chicago Bears after Goodell has determined the Niners tampered with Bears LB Lance Briggs. As you may know, the NFL are strong opposers to any sort of tampering or cock blocking. Goodell said the 49ers violated the NFL's anti-tampering policy by contacting Briggs' agent, Drew Rosenhaus(who else), about his client during the 2007 season when Briggs was a franchise tagged player.

The Niners released a statement: "The 49ers organization respects Commissioner Goodell's ruling today, however we do disagree with it, this was not a malicious act; we believe that our intent was within the NFL guidelines. Going forward, we will take the necessary steps to ensure we are in compliance with the NFL's interpretation." The Bears filed the claim last year when they expected foul play. But in the end, tampering didn't work because Briggs resigned with Chicago for 36 million over 6 years.

The Niners also given up the rights to their 1st round pick (7th overall) in a trade with New England.

I'm more interested in how the NFL/Bears figured it out because you have to assume this happens all the time. I'd hazard a guess that Rosenhaus used some of the Niner's figures to get Briggs a new deal in chicago and somehow blew their cover...

San Francisco was a franchise many (myself included) thought had figured things out and were almost completely rebuilt. After some decisions, players not panning out, and just a sheer lack of performance I must question what the Niners are doing...

I dunno about that...some teams are lucky and others aren't...

Look at dallas...their owner/gm is a total jackass and yet they do pretty well...

Since the Debartolo scandal, i think SF has done pretty well, but bad luck has killed them...sorta like the trailblazers and Sam Bowie...when you draft for position, you're gonna take the lesser player...San Fran needed a QB and ended up with a relatively weak alex smith...and that's only the start...

Yes, bad luck has much to do with it. I am talking more along the lines of over-paying corner backs and obviously ^ negotiation mishaps. Money is not being spent too wisely. But you are right, it is mostly bad luck (but that is sports for ya).

Actually Goodell Castro is a play on the name (Fidel, Goodell get it) im in no way saying Goodell is a dictator...if i end up in AGM burns i will go on the record and say i dont need any captain-save-a-hoes coming to my rescue

I got the play on the name. But there is an implication there. If you didn't mean to say he was dictatorial, then what did you mean? And others have definitely used Castro or Hitler references with Goodell for that reason.

And just to clarify: I get sarcasm and/or hyperbole. I thought Cougar was unfairly ripped for it, too, when almost everyone here exaggerates for effect frequently. What I don't get is why Goodell is taken to task for doing his job. And again, you certainly aren't the only one.

"Overly assertive"--I like that.

Is the NFL strict on TD celebrations, etc? Yes. Is enforcing a tampering rule dictato--overly assertive? No.

Tatay, seriously open a history book. Castro took over Cuba, Hilter tried to take over the world (got most of Europe) and was responsible for the genocide of almost 6 million Jews. Big difference there.

I open a history book every day--I'm a history teacher. Please re-read my comment, Cornfed. I am saying that calling Goodell Hitler or Castro is completely overblown, and pointing out that Cougar got roasted for making similar comparisons. Will Trizz be in the next AGM Burns, too?

Quite frankly, I think that Goodell has been good for the NFL. While Jerry Glanville might trot out the "No Fun League" line, players like Vick, Pacman and Ricky Williams need some guidance and discipline. And the NFL is a huge, global business - Goodell has a vested interest in making sure the league doesn't suffer protracted PR nightmares. A strong hand is maybe not fun, but from an image standpoint, it is what the NFL needs. Look at the MLB - they could really use someone like Goodell. At least it seems like someone is truly in control.
