There are some things about sports I don't like... the New Yuck Muts, the University of Michigan and those ASSCRACK UGLY HELMETS, the Floridamn Gayturds and the Miami Crimicanes. I also think that NASCRAP and professional wrestling are a HUGE waste of air time on television and would rather watch women's Jello wrestling!

Sign your card, chick!

It seems that Michelle Wie has had a Senior Moment. Just when she thought that things were going well for her, something came along and bit her.

Hard.
Image:Inter.jpg

Wie forgot to sign her scorecard Friday after the second round of the State Farm Classic. That move disqualified her from the rest of the tournament. Yes, she was not like a good neighbor.

Here's the rule that she broke (source: USGA)

6-6 b. - Signing and Returning Score Card After completion of the round, the competitor should check his score for each hole and settle any doubtful points with the Committee. He must ensure that the marker or markers have signed the score card, sign the score card himself and return it to the Committee as soon as possible.

Note that the language says "he" but actually refers to any golfer, regardless of gender.

Another rule, also from USGA

3. Returning Score Card Rule 6-6, page 31. (A player is deemed to have returned her score card to the Committee when she leaves the roped area of the scoring tent or leaves the scoring trailer).

This was not the first time that she's been dq'ed. According to the Associated Press, Wie's problems in her short career has been colored by controversy, starting with her disqualification from her pro debut at the 2005 Samsung World Championship for taking an improper drop.

Since then, she's angered LGPA icon Annika Sorenstam for withdrawing from last year's Ginn Tribute - a tournament hosted by Sorenstam - and leaving early to start practicing for the next stop. And she's withdrawn from multiple events after poor starts, citing injuries. Not good when you have the wrath of women's golf and the female answer to Tiger Woods on your head.

Her best finish this year was 20th place in the Fields Open in Hawaii.

Perhaps it's time for Michelle to take some time away from the golf course and grow up, even break away from her family. She's got too much talent for this mess. Wie broke a rule that is as old as golf itself. That is, golfers are on the honor system and expected to play by the rules. She's been living a charmed life, playing on her looks and sponsor's exemptions. Maybe it's time for that to stop and someone to slap her out of it, like Cher slapping Nicholas Cage in "Moonstruck."

She's now gone from a tournament where either the $255,000 winner's purse or the $155,252 second prize would have put her comfortably within the top 80 money winners for the year - and virtually guaranteed her a place on the LPGA Tour next year. A win would have put ESPN's ratings through the roof. Now ESPN, the LPGA and Wie have egg on their faces. While tour officials and other players are sympathetic to her, rules are rules. Imagine if Tiger or Phil chose to break the rules. There would be hell to pay.

Michelle Wie could play with the men. Right now, she's spending the weekend without a paycheck and wondering, "what if." When I heard about this, I was saying, "What in the hell were you thinking?" Even I sign my card. I don't get a nickle for my efforts but I sign it everytime I play.  You have a caddie to remind you. Listen. He could save you a lot of time and heartache. And money.

You've gone overboard again, Cougar. I hardly think not signing her card is an indication that the needs to "grow up". It was an oversight--it happens from time to time. And I don't see how ESPN or the LPGA has "egg on their faces" as a result of this.

Michelle Wie would almost certainly benefit from slowing down a bit, but the pedestal she has been knocked from was largely built by others, not her. And again, not signing her card is not an act of immaturity, just forgetfulness.
And let's be honest: the signed card rule is ridiculous. Personally, as a fan of golf, I am frustrated by good golfers being disqualified for such an antiquated and irrelevant rule. This might have been necessary in the past, but it is a pointless rule today. This is in no way an excuse for Wie--it is a rule of golf today and obviously she blew it, but I think it is time the PGA and LPGA ditch it.

To conclude, a few criticisms: First, I find the use of the term "chick" to be unnecessarily demeaning of a female athlete. Second, your source for the rules, as well as nearly an entire paragraph, word for word, was not actually USGA, but this article from ESPN.

The fact that you are friends might have something to do with her acceptance of the term, as well as her individual opinion on the issue. I'm not here to say she is wrong--I won't speak for your friend.

But (and I am making as assumption here), you are not friends with Wie, and this post is not an informal personal communication. Referring to Wie as a "chick" reflects an insensitive, demeaning and childish attitude toward female athletes. The problem is not even really about Wie, it's how it makes your article less credible.

This is all particularly ironic given that you label her as being immature.

Yes, it was a brain fart--no, it was not an indication of immaturity. Mickelson missed a pro-am a year ago and by the rules, should have been DQ'ed (he was not). Is he immature?
He also broke a rule regarding accepting outside help a month prior to that and could have been DQ'ed (agian, was not). Was that immature?

Similar idea. Mickelson's case was actually at last year's Masters, where a tournament official placed his bag in a location that may or may not have put Mickelson's ball in its shadow, thus "shielding him from the elements." Video replay excused him, but the argument could be made that he was still assisted. The story can be found here. Both in his two cases and Tiger's case that you brought up, it is likely that allowances were made because of who they are. In any case, would we call that immaturity, or do we reserve that condemnation for Michelle Wie?

A year or so, Michelle intentionally withdrew from a tournament on the 16th tee after getting advice from her agent and parents. She was a ridiculous amount over par, if she had finished her round she would have lost her rights and future exemptions to play. So she walked off, faking a migraine or something.

If anything, Wie has a history of questionable ethics and integrity when it comes to the game, and, rightfully so, is viewed under a much tougher microscope than the normal person.

She no longer has the right of being right, she now has to prove herself. And considering she hasn't won jack, she shouldn't be riding the privelege train anymore as it is.

I completely agree, Kelsdad. But not signing her card is not a sign of immaturity--it's just simple carelessness. Don't have to be immature to be careless.

Never mind that she hasn't won anything, really hasn't come close to winning anything actually, she didn't sign her card, and that's what the fuss is about.

She is an immature woman who didn't take the time to.....

Signing your card accepts the round as played, and is the players validity to the truth of the round. While there's no question some of the golf rules are a bit antiquated for today's play, not only is signing the card not one of them, it may be the single most important rule in all of golf.

Why do golf players even keep their own score?

Golfers don't keep their own score, which is why the card is signed. It's called the honor system.

Kelsdad, bottom line: why do golfers need to be accountable for the score? No one asks a pitcher to verify how many strikes he threw. No one asks Kobe what his free throw percentage was. Golfers verifying their score is pointless. I honestly don't see how you can argue otherwise--this doesn't happen in any other sport.

So, if no one verifies their score, how would anyone know? Why even play. Tiger shows up at the first tee, says, "I feel like a 68 today" and goes home. Sorry, Tay, you're not making a whole lot of sense here, bro.

The scorekeepers who walk with the groups keep score for the media, not for the players. They work for ESPN or TNT or the Golf Channel, not the PGA Tour. And the players don't keep their own score, they keep their playing partners. They sign the card to validate their round as being correct, and is the only valid score.

There's a time to be traditional, and there's a time to be modern. In this case, modernity needs to prevail. The PGA and LPGA are not starved for money nor for staffing. It would be easy for these organizations to provide professional scorers to every group.

The Los Angeles Angels defeated the Boston Red Sox in the playoffs for the first time since 1986, snapping an 11 game losing streak. It took 12 innings to do it, as Mike Napoli led the Halos to a 5-4 victory. Erick Aybar hit the game winning shot to score Napoli, and Nap was held accountable for 3 of the Angels' runs and 3 of their RBI's. Josh Beckett wasn't the postseason man he usually is, as he only lasted 5 innings, surrendering 4 runs and 9 hits. Jacoby Ellsbury also made history, becoming the first player in postseason history to hit a three-run single. He did it in the 3rd inning, as he hit a pop-up while there was some miscommunication involving Torii Hunter and Howie Kendrick in shallow center field. The Red Sox currently lead the series 2-1.
