Sean Casey signs to Red Sox for some reason

The Mayor signed a 1 year $700,000 contract with the Sox. Honestly I have no idea why, we have Youk and Ortiz, kept Mike Lowell at third only thing I can see is packaging him in a trade or is this a sign that things may not be good with the first baseman...but anyway Casey hit. 296 in 143 games last season with Detroit. He is a career .301 hitter in 11 major league seasons. He broke in with the Cincinnati Reds in 1997. The Sox who have had their name in more rumors than Lindsey Lohan finally made an offseason acquisition. But needless to say the Red Sox hot stove is becoming relatively lukewarm.

Sean Casey is an excellent acquisition. He has a superb glove at first. Soft hands for a big man. I don't know why the Red Sox need him but good for him anyway.

I actually wish there was a way for Detroit to keep him. He's an excellent teammate in the clubhouse and all the guys love him. His defense is first rate.

He maintains his average well. He didn't have as many homeruns as the Tiger's brass would like but he came through on many clutch occasions with singles and doubles.

With Boston's short right field fence he should have more homeruns easily.

Defense is good, pertty cool guy, but not the type of due you want at first base. He has no power whatsoever

He makes pretty good contact on the ball though. .301 career average. Not bad. But I still don't see why he signed with the Red Sox. First base is filled: Kevin Youkilis, David Ortiz... what more could you want?

Because someone was needed on the roster to suck more than DJ Drew.

I agree, he is a solid left handed bat off the bench.

On ebay:

"For sale: One Major League quality first baseman's mitt, seldom worn, never used, contact David Ortiz c/o Boston Red Sox."

That in itself makes it a decent sign. Plus, rumors are if JD Useless plays as well as he did last year Youk may see some time in right.

I could go for seeing Youk in right, but JD has to show something for $14 million, right?

I remember when Casey was a Pirate, they traded him to Detroit (I think) two days after Sean Casey Bobblehead Day.

Must be a theme in Pitt. The Pens did the same with Mark Recchi's 500 goal bobblehead.

im shocked that he signed for so little, this isnt exactly a washed up vet with something to prove and he could've went back to Detroit and had a legitimate shot at a title, idk why this deal jus doesnt make much sense to me

He has a better shot at a title in Boston. Take a little less cabbage for a chance at a bigger payout after the season and into next season.

Sean Casey must be wondering to himself why he never shook hands with Scott Boras 10 years ago.

Yeah, he's a cheap , low-risk bench player who could end up producing in the lineup when called upon. Solid signing.

Casey's been with a bad organization whose only other star, one George Kennenth Griffey, Jr., spends more time on the DL than on the field. The Reds have not had a winning season since 2000, when they went 85-77. Casey's a good player that most teams would kill to have.

Casey is on the downside of his career, and, for the most part, a liability with the bat, with his 2 most recent seasons putting up OPs+ of 87 and 96. Casey is, pretty much, a washed out vet that Detroit no longer wanted, and most teams want a lot more production than a singles hitter at first base. He's a good guy in the clubhouse, and kind to small children and animals, but anyone who thinks that Casey is really going to go out there and produce is really deluded. He's a late inning glove and pinch-hitter and clubhouse good guy at this stage in his career, and nothing more.
