Sam Cassell Invades Boston

"My love for Boston flows from my strange head to my alien tentacles! I come in peace."

Sam Cassell is literally on his way to Boston. The Celtics have drawn up a contract, and it’s just awaiting Cassell’s John Hancock.

He may look like an alien, but he’s going to help this team a lot in the playoff run. He will bring experience and consistency to the point guard position that is much needed. Rajon Rondo is a great talent, but this team is in perfect position for a championship right now. Rondo is going to be the man for the Celtics for many years to come, but he can make a little room on the throne for Sam Cassell this season.

Some say that Cassell will screw with the locker room chemistry, as he’s always been an outspoken guy, but this team still belongs to Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. Sam Cassell will provide leadership that isn’t exactly given from Doc Rivers. However, he will come into this situation knowing he is not the number one option.

There has also been criticism that Cassell will want to take the last shot. That is a position of glory that has belonged to Paul Pierce for many years and some fans may have a problem with somebody else coming and trying to take Pierce’s duty. I am not one of those fans. As long as that last shot goes down in the Celtics favor, I couldn’t care less if it was Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, Sam Cassell, Isiah Thomas, or Derek Jeter shooting the ball. It never hurts to have one more guy with the nads to hit the buzzer beater.

So welcome, Sam Cassell… there will be haters, but win a championship and they’ll shut up; just ask Terry Francona.

I love Sam I Am, and he's just just the kind of veteran PG we will need to share time with Rondo in the playoffs.

I was almost tempted to mention the Sports Guy's comparison to the '03 (is that the right year?) Spurs with Speedy Claxton and a young Tony Parker, then I remembered how embarrassing that would be. Parker was young and inconsistent, yet very talented like Rondo now. Claxton was the old guy who still had some game left and helped guide the Spurs to the championship. Hopefully Cassell can do that this year in Boston.

Well, I guess I just embarrassed myself in the comments instead of in the article...

Hey, call me crazy, but I thought it was almost apt!

Rondo is great, don't get me wrong. I love the way he's coming along. But to have a realistic chance we need a guy like Cassell to step in and handle things on those nights (like the Atlanta game yesterday) when Rondo ain't doing so well.

This move really solidifies the team for the playoffs in my mind -- maybe I'm talking myself into it, but it doesn't really cost us anything of consequence (unlike some of the other recent moves out West), and it could be a big difference-maker come May. What's not to like?

Yeah, the best part is that we didn't have to give up our future for him, like teams did out West (and we did for KG... but we won't go there). I think this solidifies the C's as favorites in the East if they weren't already.

The only way this move backfires is if Cassell comes in, completely undermines Doc Rivers and splits the locker room. On the court, he's more of an insurance policy for when Rondo can't take the heat. I don't think this can possibly be a bad basketball move, but it could hurt team chemistry. I think Sam will play nice, though.

Thats what I worry about. I have no doubt what Sam can do on the court, but in the locker room, I'm not sure how he will work. There are a lot of ego's to be dealt with.

It is a lot of ego for a small locker room. But this is one of the few times where Sam wasn't dragged into a situation. He REALLY wanted to come here, so my logic is that he's going to be willing to play nice and do what Doc says. Wishful thinking? Maybe...

Don't sleep on the addition of P.J. Brown either. He gives Boston some nice depth off the bench down low, something they needed. Plus he's going to provide steady veteran leadership as well. I'm excited to watch this team in May and June.

So let me get this straight, a player waived by the friggin' Clippers is supposed to be a "final piece of the puzzle" to help the Celtics win a championship? I don't think so.

Yeah, but they waived him for non-basketball reasons: he's injury-prone, he's in the final year of his contract, and they didn't want to pay him the remainder of his $6.15 million salary. On the court, though, he's still pretty good -- solid veteran PGs like Cassell don't grow on trees, you know.
