This is my first attempt at writing since the article on my wifes passing. I guess I just needed some inspiration. Well, I found it, and it came from my granddaughter. I'll give you a little background on her first:

She's 14 years old and has been obsessed with softball since she was 7. She's a pitcher, and her goal is to some day pitch for Penn State. She practices everyday and works out on her bo-flex 3 times a week. She also lifts weights 3 times a week in the winter months.

Our local school has just started a junior high team this year. Last night, she pitched against a team that has been a powerhouse in the junior high division for a number of years. She threw a perfect game, striking out 19 of 21 batters. The closest a batter came to getting on was when she started a batter 3-0 but came back to strike her out. Tonight, I'll be taking my pride and joy to the best restaurant in town. Maybe Penn State isn't out of the question after all.

Good stuff Frugolf. From my experience an excellent pitcher in softball can make a huge difference for a team.

Good luck to your Granddaughter!

Holy crap! 19 K's? In 7 innings!? That's crazy! It seems like many of the relatives of AGMers are doing pretty damn good. Great to hear, Frugolf.

The most amazing part is that varsity pitcher pitch EVERY game. No days off. Kinda makes Kerry Wood look like a sissy huh?

I don't really admit publicly very often, but I come from a softball family. My Mother and sister were accomplished players and my father and sister are successful coaches. 19K's is not just good, it's amazing. Pitching takes teams to the state championships. It's just a shame that PA has such a poor Softball program or your granddaughter could have been working on her skills from a much younger age. Try and get her on a travel team and see how she fares in other states such as Ohio.

Yeah, you just can't get that level of competition here in PA.

Wowsers...19K? That's incredible. Congratulate her on behalf of AGM. It sounds like she has a very bright future ahead of her.

I know I prefer warm weather but she has been going to Penn State's summer camps for 3 years now and is very determined to go there.I promised her I'd buy her letterman's jacket when she was 10 , and she reminds me all the time.

Tell her to keep on doing it! There are a lot of D1 schools that have fastpitch, if that's the route she wants to go in that route. More importantly, make sure she keeps her grades up. 19 k's? NOT BAD!

Thanks Cougar, she's in accelerated classes and on the honor role every quarter. She's a very quiet , hard working student. She is also very team oriented, she'd rather talk about her teammates game than her own.If she has a problem it's that she tends to practice too hard. She has had finger blisters from time to time and we've had to make her stop throwing. Her catcher is her next door neighbor and we have had to limit her pitching to 50 pitches a night.Otherwise she'd stay out there all night.

Your daughter should not have any problem being accepted at any major college if she can strike out 19 in 7 innings. Thanks for sharing with us and keep us up to date on the latest news about her softball career.
