Ok, I love football. Love it, love it, love it. But even I think that the 5th of May is a wee early for NFL prognostications. Still, when I saw Peter King's article in Sports Illustrated I did detect a slight stirring in my loins.

In a nutshell, here are his picks:

1. New England
2. Indianapolis
3. Jacksonville
4. Dallas
5. San Diego
6. New York Giants
7. Minnesota
8. Green Bay
9. Cleveland
10. Carolina
11. Philadelphia
12. Pittsburgh
13. Buffalo
,14. New York Jets
15. Seattle
16. New Orleans
17. Tampa Bay
18. Washington
19. Houston
20. Tennessee
21. Arizona
22. Baltimore
23. Denver
24. Cincinnati
25. Chicago
26. Detroit
27. Miami
28. San Francisco
29. St. Louis
30. Oakland
31. Kansas City
32. Atlanta

Personally, I think his Top 10 are fairly accurate seeing that it's hard to go wrong with teams that reload rather than rebuild. I can see some position shifting there, but all in all...not bad. The next 10, given we're 4 months from pre-season and so many arrests...er...adjustments will be made by then, are quite a crap shoot. There may be a few positive surprises in there (Houston and...well Houston) as well as a downer or two (Seattle & New Orleans). Teams 21-32 are where I see some bizarre picks. I think (call it a hunch) that Miami is going to do better that 27th. Kansas City too should end up at least 10 spots higher. Chicago I fear may be in the bottom five unless the ghost of George Halas works his mojo from the great beyond. San Francisco at 28th? No way. Could they win the West? Don't say I didn't warn you.

Anyway, I love NFL picks be they early or late. They make great fodder for discussion. As such, let's discuss.

Sorry about the formatting, mates. Me and code just don't see eye to eye sometimes. Still, I hope it's legible enough to warrant a decent discussion.

Peter King is an idiot. Let's check the logic on his New England summary:

1. NE fixes things that are wrong better than any other team in the NFL.
2. The offensive line needs work.
3. They didn't do anything about the offensive line.
4. They're the best team in the league.

Brilliant analysis.

I don't think their o-line needs work...they had an awful game...it happens

they just had it at the really wrong time...

One could argue that San Diego and Indy had better D-lines but the giants are the ones who got to Brady...

I have no problem with new england being #1...

My critique is of the logic, not the rankings. I have no problem with NE at #1 either, other than the fact that I don't like them.

Seriously, King gets worse if you actually read the article. The fallacies and disconnects in logical progression are enough to turn the stomach.

yeah, I'll go along with that...

I mostly dislike his supposed high ground moralism...

in a football column no less!

He says a lot of stupid things...but can you expect any more from practically any writer?

I absolutely agree with you, Cheezer. PETER KING proves that great access doesn't mean great analysis. If you watched him on INSIDE THE NFL, he was never correct with his "inside information" or his predictions of what would "surely happen." I know that nobody will discuss the professional journalist vs. blogger issue anymore, but he is a good example of the fat, spoiled, journalist that thinks his reporting is more valid than a fan with a blog because he has a job with a huge fascist corporation. Again, Peter King's voice is dull and incorrect too often and I'd rather hear from a blogger with a strong independent opinion.

I see something bizzare: He has Carolina in his top 10, and Pittsburgh (afc divisional playoffs) and tennessee (same) lower. Pittsburgh at 12? The titans below the Texans? Huh?

To his credit, Pittsburgh has an absolutely brutal schedule... are they the 12th best team in the league or going to finish wtih the 12th best record?

he does say though that it has nothing to do with their record.

It's freaking May and they are asking him to write full NFL articles, your gonna get some wacky stuff from anyone asked to do that.

I once claimed during a Guest Apperance on World Soccer Daily before last EPL season that if Man U didn't move to buy Nani and Anderson to replace Ruud that they could fall to 6th or 7th (midtable) in the Prem. It was August 1st and we had nothing to talk about for two hours other then Martin O'Neil signing to manage Villa - stuff happens when there is no news.

Makes one wonder what King was doing when SI asked him to write this. My guess....sitting on a beach slamming Mai Tai's.

Isn't #14 way too high for the Jets? I think the Redskins and even the Cardinals look better on paper, at least.

people forget this team went 10-6 two years ago Plus their division is weak and they place the NFC and AFC West, both relatively weak divisions...
