No D = No D'Antoni

I've already had to live through the horrible moves and decisions made by Isiah Thomas.  His moves did nothing to raise the level of play on this team, but it did raise my blood pressure and tightened the salary cap.  The signing of Jerome James to a 3 year, 30 million dollar contract, the subsequent signing of Jared Jeffries to the same overloaded contract.   I was also tickled with his experiment of signing Steve Francis so that he can be in the starting backcourt with Stephon Marbury.  I was under the impression that with the removal of Isiah Thomas as head coach to whatever secret desk they have him employing under would come the end of ill-advised and subpar decisions by the front office.

But I forgot, these are the New York Knicks!!!

The Knicks are getting ready to defy logic and reason once again like they have always done.  This is the franchise at the bottom of the totem pole with nowhere to go but up.  Even the most casual basketball analyst can say without fail that the cornerstone that must be established for any rebuilding team is..... DEFENSE!!!   And yet the Knicks are pinning the resurgence of a franchise on Mike Antoni.   Yeah, I took the D out and anyone that watched the Spurs/Suns series in the first round or at any time they have met in the playoffs gets why.

The Suns were so embarassingly porous on defense that it irked GM Steve Kerr to no end.  Antoni and Kerr clashed on their conflicting philosphies and apparently Kerr had seen enough.  And yet the Knicks, who need defense like Soujah Boy needs lyrics are looking to Antoni for their eventual renaissance??

Now there are those that might say that well...this isn't too bad a hiring because at least the Knicks will be more potent on offense.   I will debunk that theory as well.  As currently constructed, the Knicks have a hard time with a relatively simplistic half court offense.  Now they are going to be expected to learn this complex offensive system that requires actual teamwork, selflessness and the maximum effort in all of their offensive possessions.  They'll need a real point guard to run this offense, not to mention a star.  Eddy Curry won't survive for 2 seconds in this system.  They would need even more of a roster overhaul then previously thought and with their salary cap as tight as it is, it would be a miracle at this rate.

Why can't the Knicks just exercise the virtue of patience and wait till the playoffs are over so that they can interview Tom Thibedeau of Boston??!!??   Thibedeau is the defensive mastermind behind the Celtics current shutdown of Lebron James in the series.  He was an assistant under Jeff Van Gundy when the Knicks went to the finals in 99 mainly because of DEFENSE.   Even Avery Johnson would be a better choice.   But the Knicks need a fresh voice such as Thibedeau or Mark Jackson, they would be given more time and patience by the front office to turn things around.    Antoni would not be given the same window and he will have heightened expectations as a result.  You could give him a ten year contract, but you can rest assured if there isn't significant improvement within this team in 2-3 years, he'll be out.

Everything in me hopes the Bulls hire him and that the Knicks back off on this deal immediately. He is simply not a good fit.  The Bulls are a much more appropriate team for the offense he runs.   But yet it has been reported that if the Knicks hire Antoni, then the Bulls would make a serious run for...yeah you guessed it,  TOM THIBEDEAU!

I hope Donnie Walsh wakes up and realizes that while offense wins games,  DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS.

Ask the New York Football Giants.

Oh, haters are always the biggest assumers and generalizationists of misinformation.

D'Antoniball ONLY works if you have an active defense. Don't confuse high scores with a lack of D. The fast break starts on a turnover or a defensive rebound, NOT the inbounds pass.

D'Antoni's defensive philosophy is to NOT foul on the defensive end and to take the easiest shot possible as early as possible. If you are taking easier shots than your opponent - THAT'S GOING TO HELP YOU WIN!

WITHOUT defense creating the break, there is NO uptempo offense.

BTW - Check where Amare was in Blocked Shots, where Shawn Marion was in steals, where Steve Nash and Raja Bell were in charges taken, how many 24 second violations the Suns caused during D'Antoni's reign if you think they didn't play defense.

I'm tired of it. The general consensus about D'Antoni's system is just wrong. Even the vaunted Coach K of Duke learned the beauty of D'Antoni's system and implemented it with Team USA and yes, at Duke.

The Suns didn't defensive rebound enough - that wasn't D'Antoni's fault... but like he said MANY times, you often give up two or three O-boards on one possession, if three Oboards lead to two points, so what? The stats are overrated and the logic in the argument that the Suns didn't play defense is outright FAULTY.

Take a look at the Suns record this year when holding their opponents under 100 pts... HOW could they have a horrible defense and win so many low scoring games?

You know, without statistical evidence to show where D'Antoni's teams are defensively deficient I'm going to have to agree with Manny, it's not D'Antoni's fault that players like Amare are disinterested in D in favor of their offense stats. It's not D'Antoni's fault that Steve Nash is in his mid-30s and his back problems give him trouble on defense. I don't believe that D'Antoni doesn't coach defense - he doesn't preach it or over practice it like some coaches either. His style would be great for a team like Detroit that would thrive with a new offensive gameplan - but would also have the self-discipline to lock down and grind it out on D.

Manny, these Knicks do not have the basketball IQ to learn such an offense. To run this type of offense, you need a great PG like Steve Nash and a more athletic basketball team as well as a smarter team. And while Amare may be among the leaders in blocked shots, he can not play on the ball defense. How many times did the Spurs fool him on pick and rolls over and over again. How many times did Tony Parker get to the basket and this is with a slowed down halfcourt game? When it's playoff time, it's time for DEFENSE. How can I be convinced that if or when the Knicks make the postseason that they will get the critical defensive stops they need?

And what happens when the Suns run into a team that dosen't turn the ball over, especially in the playoffs where ball control is crucial? They don't maximize every possession on defense otherwise and this is why they're sitting at home watching the NBA Playoffs. This is not to say that D'Antoni is a bad coach, he isn't. He is just the right fit for the Knicks job and their situation.

Actually, the strength of the Suns D under D'Antoni has been limiting points per shot attempt and not fouling. Last year, the Suns had the 16th-best defense in the NBA; they ranked 8th in eFG% D, 27th in forcing TOs, 29th in defensive rebounding, and 3rd in opponent FTA/FGA. In 06-07, they had the 13th-best D; they ranked 12th, 23rd, 20th, and 1st, respectively. In 05-06, the 16th-best D; they ranked 17th, 23rd, 19th, and 2nd. In 04-05, the 17th-best D; they ranked 10th, 27th, 29th, and 1st. So, as you see, D'Antoni-ball relies on forcing misses and not fouling, while defensive rebounding and forcing turnovers have been major weaknesses.

Well, it seems like he is offically the coach according to ESPN.com report. I wish him the best of luck here, but I really think he needs to hire a defensive assistant because this team has no Basketball IQ whatsoever.

I understand your concerns about D’Antoni and I’m sorry about the misery that Isiah Thomas has put you and all other Knicks fans through, but I believe you’ll end up liking this coaching hire more than you think you will. Your premise that “offense wins games, defense wins championships” is true, but the Knicks and their fans shouldn’t be too worried about championships right now, they need to win games first. Thusly, hiring a coach with a liberal offensive agenda will restore hope and excitement from the players, and that’s one of D’Antoni’s best skills. He’s very player-friendly, subscribes to positive reinforcement, and rewards his team for their attention with an opportunity to run and score. It’s been a long time since the Knicks players had fun, but they will be given that chance now. Of course, the Knicks roster isn’t as impressive as the Suns, but they can’t possibly be as bad as they’ve played under Thomas. We all understand that the roster is seriously flawed and won’t get better overnight, so who better than to allow mediocre players to run and gun than a nice guy that won’t terrorize them for their mistakes, as Thomas had done. Raja Bell and Boris Diaw were seldom-used reserves that became quality NBA starters under D’Antoni and a few Knicks will have the same opportunity. They won’t win a championship anytime soon with this squad, but they will be better, they will be more exciting to watch, there will be more optimism, and hiring D’Antoni will be seen as the best decision the Knicks have made in a decade. Cheer up, DRE-LO!

Anyone's better than Isiah Thomas at this point, but the Knicks should focus on putting together a roster that suits this offense. I can see a David Lee or a Crawford doing well in this offense if the right players are obtained. And we need to get rid of the players that will take severe advantage of D'Antoni's positive reinforcement and liberal stance.

It's true that the Knicks desperately need to reconfigure their roster, but the offense isn't talent-specific like the Triangle Offense. D'Antoni will allow the players' strengths to dictate the offense and they will love him for that. It's unlikely that these young millionaires will reject positive reinforcement after being humiliated by Thomas for so long. Optimism is infectious and the Knicks players will welcome this new philosophy. And, D'Antoni's "liberal stance" means that he will allow his players a voice in the direction of the team. Most all players enjoy the concept of teamwork and a family atmosphere and that will happen now with this new coach. D'Antoni will be the polar opposite of what the Knicks have known for a decade and that will be welcomed. Consider this: The Knicks payroll was $88.8 million dollars this season. They won 23 games. That’s $3.8 million per victory. By comparison, the Charlotte Bobcats had the lowest payroll in the NBA at $57.7 million and they won 32 games for an average of $1.8 million per victory. The Knicks spent $31.1 million dollars more, but still lost 9 more games. That’s just terrible value. They needed a drastic change in philosophy and now they have it. The Atlanta Hawks made the playoffs with just 37 wins this year, so the bar is set low in the East. The Knick have hope now.

Knicks fans are gonna have to realize that this is going to be have to be a long-term project. This is no quick fix. He must be given the time to figure this thing out, I'm one of the more reasonable fans that realize this. There are others, many others that aren't.
