My Advice to Bucks Fans and Any Other Fans Considering Tanking

I'm tired of rooting for the team to lose like last season. Even when I'd want them to tank it's not like I would get all excited after a loss the same way I would if I wanted them to win and they surprisingly did. I'm not gonna sit through a whole sportscenter episode just to watch a five second highlight of a loss the same way I would after a win in case the anchors might say something decent about the Bucks.

Milwaukee Bucks owner Herb Kohl has driven some fans to root for the team to lose in order for changes to take place.
Milwaukee Bucks owner Herb Kohl has driven some fans to root for the team to lose in order for changes to take place.

And do people really want the team to tank on purpose. The thing I care most about is that the players give 100% everytime. If they were actually trying to lose why would I even bother watching them? All it brings is the bad karma since it doesn't guarentee anything. Who knows but maybe we'd would end up with the first pick anyways. Just look at the Trailblazers, who had the worst record two years ago, and had fans petitioning to take Adam Morrison if they had the chance. But they ended up with the fourth pick and took LaMarcus Aldridge after Morrison was taken third by the Charlotte Bobcats. A year later they lucked out after having the sixth worst record and still getting Greg Oden with the first pick anyways. Maybe if they would have gotten Morrison the previous year they would have lost more games and wouldn't have had the sixth worst record and, in turn, wouldn't have gotten that pick. How'd that work out for them?

And I don't think that a couple more losses would ensure that a much needed trade would occur. I don't think that a couple more meaningless wins could convince anyone, including Ron Walter and Herb Kohl, that the Bucks alright, that is unless they are commited to mediocrity and if that's the case, we would be screwed anyways. Changes will be coming in the offseason anyways, since Larry Harris is already on his last rights and a new general manager will come in to make the changes since what would be the point in bringing in a new GM if they werent going to make changes anyways. You mide as well not even have a GM then.

I also think that some of the wishes for tanking come from just being tired of the losing that is associated with being a Bucks fan. Fans get tired of getting upset after every loss that a lot of people convince themselves that they won't get as mad if they didn't want the team to win in the first place. However, you're only fooling yourself if you actually want them to lose. Just think of your mood after a team you really want to lose blows it. Packer fans know this as we all united to become Colts fans for the Super Bowl two years ago as the last thing any of us wanted was to see the Bears win it.

Becoming better won't just happen overnight though; it'll take years. If you say you want them to get better for the future, what good is that if we don't support them now? Otherwise there might not be a future for the team if management doesn't find a way to get a new arena in Milwaukee.

My advice: just support the team when they need us the most and root for them to win. Just don't get as upset after a loss.

It seems like every season the Bucks are in position to tank for a better lottery.

DON'T TANK!!!!! The basketball gods do not shine brightly on teams that tank.

The team with the worst record is only 3 times more likely to get the top pick than the team with 5th worst record (25% to 8.8%).

Of course, there's a 75% chance the team with the worst record WON'T win the lottery at all. Or worse! Like last year when the 3 worst records were all out-ping-ponged to 4th and lower...

And: What was the last team that had the worst record and got the #1 lottery ball?

BIGGER concern - Even when you get the #1 pick is it THAT big of a deal??? Cough, cough Kandiman, Kwame... Hell, even Bogut is somewhat of a bust compared to Chris Paul and Deron Williams...

Since the lottery started, only THREE #1 overall picks got a ring... THREE (and two of them were Duncan and D.Robinson of the Spurs, the other was Shaq - and no, I don't count Glenn Robinson's ring with the Spurs)

Meant to say how many times has the worst record won the lottery? Not "last time"... 3 in my memory since 1990, Cavs with LeBron, Magic with Dwight and Nets with Derrick "whoop-de-damn-Do" Coleman...

I think the Cavs are the only team to benefit from blowing a season on purpose, as they clearly were to get LeBron.

Good article, Koski.

You know what? I've realized that whenever the crowd cheers for the underdog (or shall I say a team that many think have no chance of winning), the whole team of the underdog gets fired up and makes them want to win more. They seem more determined than the other team, which is probably why we see many upsets in any sport today. This isn't really a problem for me in Big League sports (MLB, NBA, NFL, etc.), but it does in reality. I'll give you a real life example. The team I help coach is in 2nd place right now (out of 3 teams), 1 1/2 games behind the 1st place team. We faced them 2 weeks ago. Because most of the crowd was on our side (due to the fact that the other team was getting VERY cocky, I guess), we beat them! It was an amazing game.

My point is that any, and I mean ANY team CAN beat another team when it comes to a league like the NBA, MLB, etc. (even though my team isn't an MLB team), and if you get the right fans who are on your side cheering you on from the very beginning, the team will do a lot better than if there is no crowd whatsoever cheering for them. Why do you think teams get the advantage when they're playing at home?

Do your research: The Blazers had the fourth pick but had a deal to trade it to the Bulls for their second pick if Aldridge was available (He was close to going #1). The Bulls got Ty Thomas at 4, with Blazers' Viktor Khryapa and cash, and the Blazers got Aldridge PICKED SECOND, because he probably wouldnt have stayed on the board until their fourth pick. They could have had Morrison if they wanted, but they were smarter than that, Jordan and the Bobcats werent.

Tanking is probably the dumbest thing you could do in the NBA. The ping pong Gods hate a tanker, plus losing is never a good thing for your fan base. (PS: I rooted for the Celtics to tank last year, until I realized how royally screwed they can and probably will be by the lottery.)

Sounds like your crying??? Why dont you just take a glance at my list of teams...ok...feel a little better. Getting down on your team is probly the worst thing a fan can do. There is always an upside to poorly played games. For instance last year the Giants...well they sucked...but they swept the Dodgers twice...IN L.A.!!! So for me progress was made. Relax Yi Big Frickin Ginormous Monster Man will be healthy and you might win a few, since odds are you dont have to be last to get first pick...

The Boston Red Sox took Game 1 of the ALCS in a pitcher's duel between Daisuke Matsuzaka and James Shields, who both made it past the 7th inning. Matsuzaka pitched a gem, surrendering no runs, 4 hits, and 9 strikeouts in 7 sharp innings. He also had a no-hitter heading into the 7th inning, only to be diminished by Carl Crawford as he singled to right field. The final score of the ballgame was 2-0.
