'

Arrivals:

Matt Garza, Jason Bartlett, Troy Percival, Cliff Floyd, Trever Miller, Willy Aybar

X-Factor:

Two things will decide Tampa Bay’s fate this season. First, how successful will the bullpen be this season? Since the Rays lack both a studded rotation and a high-powered offense, a lot of pressure will be put on the bullpen to close out games. The combination of Reyes, Wheeler, and Percival seems very scary, but they should be able to close the door enough times to keep the Rays in third place. However, it seems strange, but Carl Crawford is also an x-factor. Crawford has shown that he is a star and can perform, but when will he achieve that breakout season that scouts have predicted for so long. Scouts rave about his 30 home run potential, yet he has not broken 20. Plus, with Delmon Young gone, Crawford will not see many meatballs any time soon. If Crawford can finally put that season together where he breaks the 30 homer and 100 RBI barrier and still steal 40 bases, he will truly become a force to be reckoned with.

Position Battle:

Even though it is not a real position battle, any question whether Evan Longoria is ready to hold down the Rays third base job. With Ty Wigginton traded last season, nobody seems likely to challenge Longoria other than Willy Aybar who has never had over 150 at-bats in the major leagues. Many questions surround the third base job as to whether Longoria is ready to step into the limelight.

Up-and-Coming Prospects:

As everyone knows, the Rays are loaded with talent. This really is not that hard when your team is bad as long as the Ray’s have been. The Rays boast one of the best farm systems in baseball, even with a team already loaded with retired prospects, now major league starters, and players used in the Young-Garza deal. Perhaps, the most hyped prospect is soon-to-be third basemen Evan Longoria who boasts great power and speed. The Rays also possess some superb pitching in the form of Jeff Niemann, Mitch Talbot, David Price, and Matt Garza. This team is certainly loaded with talent, the looming questions is: where do you put them all?

Outlook:

This will be the season that the Rays finally get over the hump and catapult themselves into third place. The only thing that will stop them from ascending any further is the fact that they are unlucky enough to be in the same division as the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees. Although they are a team stacked with talent up and down, they also have a mountain of inexperience. The team will look to veteran Carl Crawford to lead the way once again.

Rays have a very good lineup. The keys to their offense is for Gomes, Bartlett and Longoria to have good seasons if Longoria isn't sent down. Personally I think he is ready especially when he homered off Cole Hamels the other day.

Longoria will start a few games in the minors. I heard something about something like if he doesn't start on the big league roster this season, he has to wait an extra year for free agency. That benefits the Rays in the long run, so he probably won't start the season in St. Petersburg (although he should). I am not sure if this is accurate or not. Maybe I am wrong, it's just what I heard. Can someone confirm it?

He's what is known as a "Super Two" contract guy - if he starts the season in the Bigs (and stays up all year - accumulating his first full season of service time) he will be eligible for free agency TWO years earlier 2011 instead of 2013 (I think) and thus will be due tens of millions more in his next contract, and 2 years earlier.

The team's players know the situation and even Carl Crawford said "We can hold it down until he gets here"

It's not like he couldn't use the extra seasoning - he only played AA last year and he knew the situation well before Spring Training started.

Credit Longoria for his outstanding attitutde and for making it very tough on the Rays NOT to keep him in the bigs despite the situation.

Thanks for clarifying that. It is better for the franchise in the long run, and to this point that is what the Rays have been concerned with, "THE FUTURE"...

Longoria will deserve his money when he does get paid, but this is what is best for the entire franchise. Plus, the Rays can have a horrible April and make the playoffs still. But if CC says they can hold down the fort, I'll believe him...

Knowing this must have made it difficult on Evan. He showing professionalism beyond his years in this situation. Nice to see from a future MVP.

It won't hurt for him to play in Triple A for a month or two and then get called up. Rays have a strong team but Longoria will make it even stronger.

They just said on ESPN that Troy Tulowitzki said that Longoria is five times better than Tulowitzki.

Troy is being modest... to a point. Longoria will be better than Tulowitzki but that much better. Most of what makes Evan and Troy good are not only their in game attributes but also the way the lead their teams and carry themselves off the field. These are two special players that any franchise would want to build not just a team around but build an entire franchise around.

Who is to say Longoria will win ROY this year and have an MVP type season next year? For the Rays to send him down for a couple weeks just to keep from paying him for an extra year is BS. The guy could end up being the next Angel Berroa just as easily as the next ARod.
