Karl Malone, you may have been good at basketball but you suck at fatherhood.

This past Sunday the Buffalo Bills picked Northwestern State offensive tackle Demetrius Bell in the seventh round of the NFL draft. Offensive linemen rarely get any attention, especially seventh-rounders. But Bell is because of his famous father, NBA legend and present-day deadbeat Karl "The Mailman" Malone. Demetrius says the genetics of a great athlete is the only thing he ever got from his famous father.

When they met for the first time, Bell was 18 years old, and Malone delivered a harsh message that amounted to, "It's too late for me to be your father, and you'll earn your money on your own." Charming. Rumor has it that Demetrius is the product of a relationship Karl had with a 15 year old girl while he was in college. If true, it only adds to the tarnish that Malone has added to his legacy. There is one nice piece of news in all this: Bell has become close to his half-sister Cheryl Ford, a WNBA player who is another one of Malone's children out of wedlock. Demetrius says that the positive example of his sister has had the biggest influence on his life and athletic career.

Here's hoping that Demetrius makes it in his NFL career and goes on to be a better father when that time comes. Shame on you Karl.

He also used to (still does?) own a truck line out of Utah. Years ago my father and I ran a line out of St.Louis and we would use his company for back-hauls out of St.Louis to the west. One day he showed up in our office because he had driven one of his own trucks down to deliver in Memphis. I of course, was not there and missed the whole episode. When I got back, the whole truck stop (where our office was located) was buzzing. I'm such a loser.

All we need is one of Kemps sons/daughters to get with one of Malone's and have a kid that would be like some sort of mega bastard

Megabastard meaning that he/she will be made of spare athletic parts of previous athletic "bastard-makers" and will be the perfect robotic bastard-athlete. The 6-million dollar bastard if you will...

Sure Malone isn't the best father in the world, but he's good at spreading around the athletic genes.

Can any of us truly be surprised at his output of offspring? After all, he made a career out of driving to the hole.

Karl did not have the best relationship with Cheryl Ford either. If I recall, he didn't attend many of her games. It's sad that he can man up on the court, but not off it.

Rumor has it that Malone was a college sophomore when he got Demtrius Bell's mom pregnant. I've read (on the internet, take as fact at your own risk) that she was 13 when Bell was born. Subtract nine months and you have a pretty good chance that Malone got a 12 year old girl pregnant.

I can't seem to confimr this information, but if true, that's the real crime here.

This story was first reported by ALLEN WILSON of THE BUFFALO NEWS: http://www.b.../334471.html. I'm glad that every blogger in the blogosphere is rewriting it and keeping it alive, however. Karl Malone is a Deadbeat Dad and I hope that Demetrius Bell has a long career in the NFL. FYI: Gloria Bell was, indeed, just 13-years old when she had Demetrius.

give malone a break, if you just meet some 18 yr old kid would you give them a bunch of money? no, and he is being realistic when he says that he cant be the guys dad, he is 18 and has lived this long without one, that kid prolly would not want karl to be his dad anyway

Hmmm ... I don't agree, Overtheedge. Consider this:

1. Bell is not just some kid. He's Malone's son. 2. If it's money that Bell needs, Malone has tons of it to give. Deadbeat Dad's always think they're being hustled for cash. Good Dads try to help their kids, even the ones they don't raise. 3. He CAN be Bell's Dad after all this time. 18-year olds need Dads too. You'd think Malone would like to catch up with the boy he never knew, but it doesn't seem like he does.

So, no, we should not "give Malone a break". He knocked-up a 13-year old girl when he was a 20-year old college student. Then refused to ever help his child. Karl Malone is a douche-bag.

The Philadelphia Phillies hit 4 home runs in Game 4 of the NLDS to defeat the Milwaukee Brewers, 6-2. Jimmy Rollins hit a leadoff home run to start the Phils' offense. Then Pat Burrell (who was 0-for-8 in the series heading into the game) hit 2 more home runs, including a pair of back-to-back jacks with Jayson Werth. This marks the first time the Phillies advanced to the NLDS since 1993. Can they defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers and make it to the World Series? Only time will tell...
