John Gibbons Fired

John Gibbons has been fired by the Toronto Blue Jays and former manager Cito Gaston will take over as interim manager. The Blue Jays have lost 13 of their last 17 games and are mired in last place in the AL East division.

The firing of Gibbons is the third this week with the Mets letting Willie Randolph go and the Mariners sending John McLaren packing earlier this week. Houston Astros manager Cecil Cooper may be the next in the firing line. The Astros are only half a game ahead of the last place Cincinnati Reds in the NL Central and have been a Major disappointment this season. They had played better earlier in the season, but have reverted back to their losing ways.

J.P. Riccardi had a particularly hard decision to make since he had to fire his former Minor League roommate Gibbons when they both were with the New York Mets farm system in the 1980's.

The Blue Jays are 28th in the Majors in home runs with 49 in 74 games. They are 3rd in ERA behind the Oakland Athletics and Chicago White Sox with a 3.64 ERA. Matt Stairs (8), Vernon Wells (7), and Lyle Overbay (6) are the only three players with more than 5 homers this season. Rod Barajas leads the team in batting average with a .290 mark. Lyle and Overbay lead in RBI's with 28 each, which is not much considering that league leader, Josh Hamilton, has 74.

Tonight new manager Gaston takes the helm in Pittsburgh tonight where they will be playing the Pittsburgh Pirates with Roy Halladay (8-6) facing Zach Duke (4-4).

Could see this one coming a mile away. Guess who's at the top of the list to be the replacement? Fuck Buck Showalter.

Great theory except one thing, JuT - the Blue Jays AREN'T in first place (or second, or third, or fourth)

Fregosi will somehow find work soon enough...

Showalter was 319-329 with the Rangers. He had a good second year with 89 wins but it still was good for only third place. They they won 79 and 80 games his last seasons there and that was also good for third place.

Letting Frank Thomas go so early in the season was a big mistake since he probably would be leading the team in homers and RBI's if he had stayed. None of the Blue Jays hitters exactly have opposing pitchers trembling but their pitchers may have opposing hitters trembling.

That's not Gibbons' fault though. What the heck is wrong with that GM of the Jays. I don't understand his logic for letting him go. Thomas sure is teaching the Jays a valuable lesson: that he can still play ball, and they should have some faith in a player; just because you're in a minor slump doesn't mean you should just let him go. If it wasn't for the Jays' pitching, the Jays would most likely have the worst record right now. With the pitching that they have, they should be where the White Sox or A's are in the standings... not in last place.

After what he said the other day about Adam Dunn, and with how the Jays have played this season, Ricciardi fired Gibbons to save his own ass. And he still may be gone.

Adam Dunn didn't deserve to be publicly castigated by a general manager of a losing team. Ricciardi should be busy worrying about his own team rather than a player on a team in the other league.

Adam Dunn may strike out a lot but he does hit a lot of homers and get on base a lot but is not exactly a great fielder in left field but regardless the hatchet job by Ricciardi was not deserved.

You know who should be fired? Vernon Wells. Or at the least, he should give back some of that money. He is just awful this year.
