I'm a sports fanatic. I hail from Nelson County Virginia, and thats where I learned to be a Virginia Cavalier fan. I also learned to be a Dallas Cowboys fan because I hated how good the Redskins were doing. I've played sports at almost every level with the exception of being a fulltime professional, as a result I have a great perception on the sporting world. I love to talk sports and I've never been shy to share my opinion with someone.

Joe Gibbs steps down as coach of the Washington Redskins

According to the Associated Press, as of 9 AM, Joe Jackson Gibbs has retired as President and head coach of the Washington Redskins.  This marks the end of the second tour of duty for the Hall of Fame Coach, who also coached the Redskins from 1980-92.  Joe Gibbs second stint in Washington has been a bumpy ride to say the very least.

With the Gibbs gone from the organization, there is a major void the Redskins will look to fill over the next few months.  Of course all the typical names are already being circulated for who will be the next coach of the Washington Redskins.

No surprise. I'm glad Joe at least goes out with a playoff team. Saunders and Williams certainly have the inside position on being the next coach, but if Snyder sees some bright shiny object available, it wouldn't surprise me to see him go another direction. If it was me, I'd go with Saunders since Williams has already had a HC job and didn't do very well.

I disagree, that offense is the problem with the Redskins. Williams is the most likely to follow Gibbs. The Redskins defense is stout and is definitly the best asset on the team, and something ot build off of. The offense only put up 13 pts a game last year, hardl makes Saunders look like some genius. If he was that talented of a coach he would have been tapped as a HC a long time ago.

Im just not sold on the idea that Garret is leaving Dallas. I know he is a hot prospect, but I just think he is being groomed for the Dallas job. And that Wade will only be there for a year or two.

What year are you talking about, BigPPup? The Offense put up 20.9 ppg this year, which puts them in the middle of the NFL. Does that make Saunders a genius? No. But maybe that argues for making him the HC and hiring another OC, then enticing Williams to stay at DC. Since Williams is 17-31 as a Head Coach, I'd look to someone new rather than someone who has proven he knows how to lose.

Well ask any coach and 21 is the magic number for an team to score, and the Skins fell short of that. That being said you cannot sit there and tell me you were happy wit hthe scoring output of the Skins

I'm quite sure there were 10 other players who could've made that tackle on Trufant. But if 14 of those didn't count, Seattle would've scored..... 21!

I can't imagine they woul have fired Joe. The Redskins had already offered him a 2 year extension that would extend his contract through till 2010.

I agree. No way they would have fired him. While it certainly hasn't been the glory days of old, he has made the playoffs 2 out of 4 years.

I give credit to Gibbs for helping the Redskins overachieve for the most part during his second tenure here. The 2 playoff apps in the last three years came as a result of Washington's resiliency down the stretch, and you look to the head coach for that. And this guy won 3 championships with 3 diff signal callers the first time. His contributions to this franchise are impressive. If only he knew you can't call consecutive timeouts.

Ya know, I think the problem in DC is with Snyder. He just does not have what it takes to run an NFL franchise. I saw go with new blood, and with the way things work in the NFL if you need help on offense then hire a defensive co-ordinator. Don't ask my why or how other than to say that it's true. O-co = D-teams D-co = O-teams. Doesn't make sense at just how the NFL works these days.

Bottomline is Seattle had nohting to do with Joe Gibbs resigning. Gibbs was exhausted by the end o fthis season, and I cannot imagine that he wanted to stay on as the coach anylonger. That is why he didnt accept the contract extension 2 weeks ago when i twas offered.

Away:

Bungles

I seriously think that Andy Reid needs to use Westbrook more often, that's the best player for Philly. Oh, and think about getting rid of Reggie Brown...that seems to be a disaster.

McNabb could barely move at the beginning of the year, they basically forfetted their first few games while he wore a knee brace

The Eagles had the 6th best offense, 10th best defense Seahawks were 9th best offense and 15th best defense And the Eagles might have won against the Seahawks if AJ Feeley hadnt tried to force feed Lofa Tootoopoo the ball four times including at the 10 with literally seconds remaining, believe me I was there

I'm sure Seneca Wallace would have excelled in a situation like that though

The redskins lucked into the playoffs because the Vikings chocked. Gibbs was done whether they made it or not. After the timeout fiasco he realized he could not do the job at a level acceptable to his standards. This loss was irrelevant to his decision.

I'm glad Joe Gibbs got to leave on his own terms. The Skins enjoyed a great ride after losing #21. Hats off to Joe and Good luck to him in the future. I think Al Saunders should be given a chance as head coach. Gregg Williams is best suited to stay as D-coordinator since he dosen't have the best background as a head coach.

Right, the Vikings chocked, like chocking dogs. Winning the final four games of the season, with or without unimaginable tragedy, makes one a deserving playoff team, especially in the grossly inferior NFC. Joe Gibbs is one of the all time great coaches in NFL history, and an even greater human being. Thanks Joe, for making the world a better place!
