Jaguars Joining League's Elite

Before Saturday night’s gut-check victory over the favored Steelers at Heinz Field, it was hard to think of the Jacksonville Jaguars as an elite team. Sure, they were 11-5 this year, and had posted a 31-17 in the last three years under their fiery coach Jack Del Rio. They did have the leagues best rushing duo, and a physical defense that dominated opponents. But, until Saturday, this team failed to break through in big games, developing a reputation as a nice, but not super team. That all changed with Josh Scobee’s game-winning kick that clinched Jacksonville’s first postseason win since 1999, back when Brunell and Coughlin were the stars. It’s definitely been awhile. The 31-29 win may have been their second of the season over the Steelers, but this one meant a lot more.

It wasn’t a typical Jaguars victory; they allowed 29 points, and let Ben Roethlisberger throw for over 300 yards in picking apart their defense, especially during a spirited rally from 18 points down in the fourth quarter. It didn’t matter, though. The Jaguars remained cool
when it mattered most and just accomplished the impressive feat of beating Pittsburgh on the road twice in a month. The Steelers hadn’t lost in Heinz Field since Christmas Eve ’06 before Jacksonville’s tilt with the Steelers in Week 15. Now, the Steelers have a two-game losing streak at Heinz. The win also continued Jacksonville’s strangle hold over the Steelers. The Jaguars have beaten Pittsburgh four times in a row over the past three seasons, with only one of those wins at home. This scenario was perfect for a team to make a statement.

It started perfect, too. After an impressive opening drive by the Steelers got them a touchdown, the Jaguars would dominate for the next 30 minutes, and take a 28-10 lead when Maurice Jones-Drew danced his way into the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown. All seemed good when Pittsburgh lined up on a 4th down play with the Jags looking to strike the coffin. But, a breakdown in the secondary led to a Santonio Holmes touchdown that sparked a 19-point run that gave Pittsburgh a 29-28 lead with only minutes left.

Despite not playing his best game, David Garrard made plays at the most opportune times, and was instrumental in the comeback drive. His stat line was nothing to boast about, 9/21, 143 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT, but when his team was facing do-or-die he made the play that had to be made. On 4th and 2, with under 2 minutes to go, Garrard dropped back looking for a receiver to save him, but nothing was there. With the Pittsburgh rush approaching, Garrard made like Pat White and rushed right by the first down marker for a 36-yard gain that effectively sealed Pitt’s fate. It’s the type of play Garrard makes, and a big reason why Del Rio let Byron Leftwich walk in the offseason. This decision was pure gold.

With this win, the Jaguars look ahead to the two teams in the AFC that they have been looking up at for years. A matchup with New England or Indianapolis awaits in the Divisional Round. The AFC has been the Pats and Colts versus the field for the better part of two years now, but Jacksonville is looking to sneak in as the latest foil. Having already beaten San Diego, the Jaguars must now take the next step, and show they are Super Bowl worthy by taking out one of the giants that awaits them.

For me Jacksonville has to beat either Indy or New England next week to be considered an elite NFL team. Their certainly good, but I think most people were expecting them to win this game against the Steelers minus their best running back. No doubt though that they are very good and will give the Pats or Colts a run for their money.

i think you could see the jags having the tough type of DBs to handle the pats receivers...

and they can run the ball/control the clock, which is another key to beating the pats

What i didn't like was some of the BS and chippyness going on, NE doesn't do that because they don't have to...

I hope its an entertaining matchup...it certainly has a good chance... (requiem to the end of the titan's season...)

I'd guess Pats by about 8 will be the line...

This is the team that worries me most as a Pats fan... It's not so much the defense because I feel like New England is going to put up at least 30 against any defense with any scheme. But the Jacksonville offense is set up perfectly to beat the Patriots. They run the ball better than anyone and they can beat the slow New England linebackers. Plus, they have a quarterback with some mobility which is an added dimension, and when they need to throw, they have big, physical receivers who will be tough matches against the Pats corners, Hobbs and Samuel, who are both smallish guys on the wrong side of six feet. This team scares me.

But this time, BB has probably be gameplanning for the Jags and Titans, both strong defensive teams that can keep up with their WR's, and a QB that can run outside of the pocket. They've got a gameplan against the Bolts fron both the playoffs, and week one.

How does this statement make any sense? Jacksonville has to beat NE or Indi to be an elite team? If they beat NE they would probably win the freakin superbowl. What the heck man! Jacksonville goes and beats Pittsburgh and moves on in the playoffs and they still aren't good enough for you? That's whacked! Can I vote this a dumb comment of that day?

Ha, I'm sure you could nominate it. To me, an elite team would be like, the top 3-4 teams, the cream of the crop in the NFL... Indy, NE, maybe Dallas and Green Bay. I think teams like Jacksonville, NY Giants, Seattle, San Diego are very good teams, not elite.

AGS - Any given Sunday (or Saturday)

The Pats - if they are who we think they are - are RELISHING the opportunity to kick somebody's ass right now. They know that 16-0 won't mean shit if they don't win the Super Bowl AND run the playoffs CONVINCINGLY.

After "the perfect season" they still have too much to prove to register their name on the "All Time Greats" list...

They want to come out and not just dominate the Jags, they want to SHUT OUT the Jags! They want to smash their facemasks into their faces, they want to punch 'em in their teal tongues and they want to knock their dicks in the dirt and scream "FACK YOU '85 Bears" while doing it!!!

That being said... GO JAGS!! (Even though I'm still hoping for that Vinateri game winning field goal at Foxboro)

I hope for this scenario in the AFC Championship game:

2:30 left on the Clock, 3rd and long for New England at about midfield. Brady throws an INT, but the return gets nowhere.

Out comes peyton to try and do what Brady has done so many times. Time after time, the pats fail to stop them.

Clock is stopped at 3 seconds at the New England 30, and Vinnateri comes out for what should be the game winning field goal, and shanks it.

The Jags were not the better team.
  • Two missed two-point conversions stupidly attempted by the Steelers.
  • A 96 yard kickoff return setting up a short TD run for Jax.
  • Int return for a TD for Jax.
These are not the kind of things you can depend on to be successful week after week.

I moved this so it's indented properly...

We're talking about joining the elite of the league. An opponent blowing conversions and special teams coverage (both non-repeatable events) is not something you can depend on week in and week out. The same applies to the interception return for a TD.

These are non-repeatable events. They will lead to inconsistent, short term success, not long term success. See Bears, Chicago (with Devon Hester)

Pittsburgh outgained the Jags and out possessed them. Two good indicators that they should have won. Most of the time, the team that leads in yardage and ToP will also lead in scoring.

Over the last several weeks, the Jags have been the better team. I would have put them at the same level as the Packers and Cowboys. Near the Colts and as close as anyone can be to the Pats this year. On Saturday, they were not that same team. They regressed and thanks to some bad play on behalf of the Steelers, they were victorious.

Remember, even with all of those blatant errors by Pittsburgh, it still took a FG in the final minute of the game for the Jags to win

I'll agree that Jacksonville is not yet in the elite of the League.

It's true that long kickoff returns and INT returns are rare, but it isn't as if they happen randomly like a lightning strike. Playing solidly on special teams is an important part of the game, and protecting the football is even more important. If you play solidly on special teams, good things will happen (blocks, big returns, etc.). If you don't protect the football, bad things will happen.

To be honest, Jacksonville didn't impress me much, but Pittsburgh impressed me even less. Jacksonville was better than Pittsburgh and deserved to win.

Cheezer, you won't win this argument. It is much easier to just say the better team won than to have to actually analyze a game. The Jags were outplayed in most aspects of the game. Outplaying the other team in most of the game, unfortunately, does not guarantee victory. some people can't understand that.

Again, all this debating isn't necessary for this year. It's going to be a sweep this week with NE, Colts, Green Bay, and Dallas winning. And winning is winning. When you win you are better than the other team who lost.

"Outplaying the other team in most of the game, unfortunately, does not guarantee victory."

We all know only Anthony Smith can guarantee a victory. Sorry, door was wide open.

I understand how Team A can completely outplay Team B, even dominate them in 99% of the game and Team B can still win.

Football is more than just yards and time of possession. Look at the Titans/Chargers game. Tennessee "dominated" in the first half in terms of 1st downs and time of possession, but only had 6 points to show for it. Why? Because they made mistakes and couldn't punch it into the end zone.

Football is about mistakes. Which team makes fewer mistakes. Which team capitalizes on mistakes. Which team minimizes the damage of their own mistakes.

I never said the game was all about yards and time of possession. I said that those two statistics are indicators of success.

"Pittsburgh outgained the Jags and out possessed them. Two good indicators that they should have won. Most of the time, the team that leads in yardage and ToP will also lead in scoring."

Keywords: indicators, most of the time.

Of course, I hate using yards as an indicator of success like the NFL rankings do. Ten yards on 3rd and 12 will look good on the stat totals, but you still didn't gain the first down.

My point is that it's a 60 minute game. You can outplay your opponent for 59 minutes and still lose. Just ask the Ravens and Giants about their games with the Patriots. And didn't Jacksonville outrush the Steelers by about 90 yards? Didn't Jacksonville win the turnover battle 4-2? Didn't the Jags sack Roethlisberger 6 times? But those stats aren't important. Having the ball for 6 more minutes than your opponent, that's what matters.

If the Jags played in any other division in the NFL, besides the AFC East, not only are they division champs they have a bye. They went 2-4 in the toughest division in football. In any other division they pick up 2 wins. They are as good as most people thought Pittsburgh was before they played the Browns.
