Is Robert Horry a Dirty Player?

Robert Horry has had one of the most interesting careers in NBA history. He is one of those guys who has a knack for being at the right place at the right time. That is probably why he currently has 7 NBA Championships, and is currently working on number 8 with the San Antonio Spurs. Now many will write Horry off and say he was just lucky to be around and ride the coattails of great players (Hakeem, Kobe, Duncan). However, if you look at all of his championship runs, somewhere along the way, Horry has made an impact play to change a series. There is a reason why they call him Big Shot Bob. Yet in the last two seasons there, is something else Horry is becoming known for: dirty play.

Last season, the Spurs and the Suns were in a playoff series for the ages. Both teams were going at each other with everything they had and by game 5 it appeared the Suns may have had enough in the tank to take full control of the series and even make the NBA Finals. But all of that would change in a heartbeat. In the closing moments of the game, Robert Horry put a hip check on Steve Nash that would have made any NHL defenseman proud. Nash flew into the scorers table, the Suns bench cleared, they lost two of their starters for the next game, and Phoenix never rebounded. San Antonio would go on to dominate the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals.

Fast forward one year and you find yourself in a very similar situation. Game 6 of the Western Conference Semifinals, the Hornets are on the road at San Antonio. The Spurs have the game in hand, and then Big Shot Bob lays the smack down on Hornets forward David West. A hard backscreen would send West to the floor in pain and put him out for the rest of the game. More importantly, West now has to rehab and heal his aching back before a game 7 on Sunday. Coming from someone who has played through back injuries, this quick turnaround an rehab is not an easy task. Don’t believe me? Ask Kobe how his back is feeling right now.

But here we are again: a hard foul and Robert Horry is right in the middle of it all. For me, Horry has yet to prove he is a dirty player. Both the hits on Nash and West were simply hard fouls. For Nash, his own momentum carried him into the scorers table. With West, it was just unlucky that he had a previously injured back. You can’t blame Horry for setting a backscreen on him.

Robert Horry is a veteran player who understands his role on his current team. If that means taking it back to the old school and setting a few hard picks, then I’m okay with that. It’s the playoffs and basketball is a contact sport. As long as he is not throwing punches, I say let him play.

Now that whole Hall of Fame talk for Robert Horry… I’ll leave that for another day.

Youre still bitter about the Nash crosscheck. And upon second review I will say it was a hard hard hit, but in many ways Horry cant be responsible for the chainreaction it set off.

"Horry can't be responsible for the chainreaction it set off." Wrong.

If you rob a bank and steal a car and go on a 50 mile police chase and people get into accidents narrowly missing you, or even have a heart attack because of your actions - YOU are responsible!!!

If Horry doesn't hit Nash, NO ONE gets suspended!!!

I wont argue the suspensions because I thnk they were dumb and Stern made a huge mistake. That being said, Staudimire and company knew the rules and they broke them. If you call me a N@%*R, I know the law, but it won't stop me from beating you within an inch of your life. Now who was wrong? you for saying it, but is it my fault that I am the aressted? Yes.

Law and practicality are polar opposites, JuT. And Stern DIDN'T follow the letter of the law or Duncan would have been suspended for actions earlier in the game when HE stepped on the court even further than Diaw or STAT did...

I need to go puke my spleen up now.

I'm gonna go use a chainsaw as a Qtip in hopes that I can clear my mind of that unfortunate fixing of a sporting event.

Watch out Hornets, the San Antonio Sterns might have a trick up their sleeve for Game 7. Oh how I hate the Spurs!

Great article. Horry is a love em/hate em player. When he was in Los Angeles I hated him until he started hitting big shots, once he stopped I wanted rid of him. He doesn't really do much positive on the basketball court other then hit big shots in big situations. Meaning he's not a good defender, he's a poor passer, decent rebounder in his day, not good now though. He's basically as John Hollinger put it "getting playing time out of loyalty". Horry is way past he's usefulness and is getting his due respect PT. I think he really only has rough tactics left to offer a basketball team.

Robert Horry is considered a “dirty” player by modern measurements, but some of the greatest players in history have been much more physical than Horry and were known as “tough”, not dirty. Kevin McHale routinely threw an “inadvertent” elbow in the post, especially during the playoffs. Karl Malone set spine-shattering back-screens that defenders were pushed into by John Stockton, and the great Michael Jordan would slap at his opponent’s hands until they bled. None of these guys were labeled dirty, possibly because the game was wonderfully, gloriously, tougher than it is today. The NBA is stuck in a gray area of officiating right now. Hand-checking is illegal and enforced on the perimeter, but LeBron James and (for over a decade) Shaquille O’Neal have been able to climb over a defender’s back in the low-post without being called for an offensive foul. In the 80’s players knew how physical the game could be played. Today they are confused by the inconsistency of it. Nobody would have called Horry “dirty” before this era, which is getting softer and softer. Both examples of Horry’s “dirty” play involve screens, which are important to the game. He moved on the Steve Nash screen and threw a shoulder. That was a dirty play, but not dirty enough to label Horry as a chronic abuser. The back-pick he set against David West was perfectly legal, and if we outlaw hard screens like that, the game will suffer and flopping will become as prevalent as a World Cup soccer match, and none of us want that. I don’t call Horry dirty. I call him classic.

I'm sorry but I see a mistake in your writing - Horry was setting a screen when he hit Steve Nash? Nash had the ball and was taking off up court on a break away, how was Horry setting a "Screen"?

Nash was free and clear coming from under the backboard toward half court and Horry slid over two steps and laid a big time check on Nash - there is no disputing that. Horry has diminished into a player that has nothing left to offer on either end of the floor but hard work off the bench to provide rest for the Forwards and hard fouls.

I don't think Horry was a dirty player his whole career, but don't twist that Nash incident, that was dirty.

Okay, that was by definition a "defensive screen" that Horry set on Nash. The purpose of a defensive screen is not to take a charge, but to slow down a dribbling player by redirecting him. That said, I clearly stated that I thought that was a dirty play. So, we agree. And, I agree that flopping is already in the game. It arrived when the NBA started calling too many fouls on minor contact and it will need to be addressed soon. Thanks for your input, LASposrtsblog.

I think it's fair (since I can't deny simulation or as we call it in America "flopping") to make the connection that the influx of players from "footballing nations" who played footie as children is the cause of the rise in flopping in the NBA. It's like you said - only going to be cleared up with more consistent refs. As far as Horry's attempt at a defensive screen as you said, or as I saw it a piss poor attempt to make a shoulder check look like an attempt at taking a charge; I'm glad we can agree it was a dirty play. My argument is that it is representative of the player he has become through diminishing skills and injuries - a player who has nothing left to offer but dirty tactics and mop up time who is getting PT out of the respect from his coach.

You are so right about that. It's sad that Malone, Stockton, Ewing, and Barkley, actual superstars, never won rings. Whereas, Horry, a role player, is running out of digits for all his rings. He has nothing to do with the misfortune of those other guys, but you can refer to him as the second luckiest man in the NBA, right behind the great opportunist - Phil Jackson.

It takes some skill to be as good an opportunist as Phil. Horry has recieved so much credit for things NOT of his doing. He's not clutch at all - he's MISSED a ton of "big shots" too. He's just been in the right spot, accidentally a bunch of times...

I will never forget that stupid play by Vlade Divac when he slapped the ball RIGHT TO Horry who hit the game winning three to help cement the "legend".

VLADE! Throw the ball up in the air, to the other end of the court, kick it into the stands, DON'T slap it straight back out!!!

If Horry was doing what he's supposed to be doing on that play, he would be rebounding, not standing around at the top of the key... I mean, he made the shot, but he shouldn't even have been there.

NBA playoff games are brutal and players beat and get beaten. It is not Horry's fault that players nowadays are too fagile to take NBA playoff fouls; and yet want to be in it. And besides, he fouls just as hard as the other guy and no more. It is better for the whinner to whine for women to breastfeeding babies to make them tougher rather than wasting time complaining about Horry... It has not stopped his 7 rings collection and his place in NBA folklore.
