I miss you, Manny Ramirez

The last time the Red Sox played the Yankees without Manny Ramirez on the roster, Troy O'Leary was playing leftfield for the Sox. Translation...it was the year 2000. Amidst a tight wild card race and clinging on to hopes of catching the Tampa Rays, the Sox enter Yankee Stadium Manny-less. Without one of the best righthanded hitters to ever live, the Sox have kept their heads above water. But, they haven't played the Yankees. And, Manny owns the Yankees. Ramirez has hit .321 with 55 homeruns and 163 RBIs against the pinstripes over the course of his career. If you check his numbers over the past few years, they get even better. This is not to mention the impact he has had on David Ortiz's success against the Yanks. At the end of Manny's tenure with the Sox, he acted like a little brat. He whined. And when his whining wasn't being heard, he stamped his feet and whined some more until it pissed off his teammates. The Sox brass was left with no other option but to trade him.

But, why did it have to happen this way? I fear the worst for the 2008 Sox. Even if they can find their way into the playoffs, they'll need to face the best pitching in the American League without the American League's best hitter. Manny critics, who claimed that his numbers had fallen off in recent years, failed to recognize that Manny can hit the best pitching. When you're trying to win a World Series, it all comes down to who has the best pitching and who can get clutch hits off of the best pitching. Newsflash...Ramirez has the most postseason homeruns in baseball history! That's six more than Mickey Mantle, and 24 more than Jason Bay. This midweek series in New York could be a great indication as to how the Sox will play the rest of the way. And, it doesn't help that it will probably be Yankee fans' last chance to torment the Sox in the House that Ruth Built. As much as Sox fans want Manny to fail in L.A., I doubt a Dodgers' collapse will be consolation enough for a playoff-less season.

...and a total of 18 post-season home runs... Of course, Mantle could only play in the world series, so there ya go...and probably more incredibly Manny's hit 24 bombs in 95 games to Mantle's 18 in 65

Counting Division Series or Championship Series homers in a player's postseason total is like counting spring training homers in their regular season total. Anyone who believes Jim Thome or David Justice or Manny Ramirez are better hitters than Mantle and use as their reference point their postseason HR totals probably think reality TV shows aren't fixed.

Really? I disagree. You make a fine point about all of Mantle's home runs coming during the WS, but both are a victim of circumstance. To rebuke the Divisional and League championship games as mere practice is kind of ridiculous in my opinion, since you need those games to get to the world series...its not like you can just skip them

Like I said, try looking at total games played...which is at least a more accurate barometer of Home run occurrence...Mantle was hitting a home run practically every 4th world series game, while Ramirez is closer to one every 6 (or once every series)

He's an animal in the postseason. That was the key point I was trying to drive home there. I wasn't trying to say he's a better hitter than Mantle. But, is he?

why so quick to dismiss the question. have you looked at the numbers? with about 400 less at bats, Manny already has over 150 more RBIs than Mantle did. Manny's average is 15 points higher than Mantle's. why Mantle?

Numbers? Are you kidding? Numbers say whatever you want them to.

Here's some numbers for you to look up - How many Triple Crowns has Manny won? How about MVPs?

Ask Joe Torre who was better. Ask anyone who ever saw them both play and you will get quickly dismissed as a young, foolish punk. Hell, watch some video of Mantle yourself.

If Mantle played 'today' with the advances of modern medicine (Knee surgery) and advances in psychological therapies (alcoholism), he'd likely be the first player with 800+ HR...

Ramirez might be a Hall of Famer, but if you had to cut the Hall of Fame down to ten players Mantle would be in and Ramirez wouldn't be in the discussion at all.

To say Ramirez is a better hitter than Mantle is like saying Pete Rose was better than Ty Cobb. Hey, the "numbers" say so...

Not just any Yankee... Come on, it's the Mick!

I've been wildly defensive of Don Mattingly in the past - remember the debate when I said Donnie Baseball was a better player in every facet than Jeff Bagwell?

You should hear me laud the (baseball) talents of the Greatest Yankee of them all - Yogi Berra - sometime.

I'll also never say an evil word about Lou Gehrig - the best pure hitter in baseball history - either.

Home Run Baker, Bill Dickey, Joe Dugan, Bob Meusel, Dave Winfield, Alex Rodriguez, Graig Nettles, Reggie... all the Yankees before 1920... I can argue on each of their behalf

That's more Yankees I can defend than Red Sox (Ted Williams and .... um, ....Tris Speaker? Jimmie Foxx? Cy Young? Uhh.... not-a-HoFer, Jim Rice )

Numbers are a great way to take all emotional biases out of the discussion. You can argue that Mickey Mantle would benefit from modern medicine. Maybe modern day media coverage of his affairs would have crushed his career. Maybe if Manny had played in the 1950s, he wouldn't be such a crybaby.

maybe if manny played in the 1950s he'd only play 154 (?) games...

Maybe he'd not be able to take August's off?

Maybe he wouldn't benefit from modern medicine?

Maybe baseball wouldn't have been as lucrative

Maybe he'd face different pitching

Maybe during Mantle's two best home run seasons (where he hit over 50), no one else was even within 10...

this could go on...

And thoise things aren't measurable by numbers are they?

If Manny would have played in the 50's (pre-expansion days) he wouldn't have faced a thinned pitching pool, smaller parks or been able to hit tighter wound balls with denser bats that have thinner handles, would he? If Mickey played today, he would be an potential 40-40 candidate - because they didn't steal in his era like they do now.

Like I said, take a look at Mickey. Ask someone who saw him play. He was considered by many to be superior to Willie Mays and only a fool would take Hank Aaron over Mantle straight up.

Mantle was a better hitter from BOTH sides of the plate, a better baserunner, a smarter baseball player and DEFINITELY a better fielder than ManRam. Mantle hit the longest MEASURED HR of all time. Ramirez took his money and ran...

It's nice that the bloated numbers of this era (Hello, is Gary Sheffield as good as Gehrig? They both have 493 HR... Is Frank Thomas better than Ted Williams? They both have 521 HR! Is Jim Thome better than Jimmie Foxx???) can help you form an argument but it's akin to saying George Bush was more popular than Abraham Lincoln just because more people voted for Bush...

There are a lot of would have, should have, could haves. All we know is what they did and it's pretty clear to me that Manny is in the conversation and it's a good time to have it given that they have almost taken the same number of at bats. I would agree that Manny played in an era of inflated power numbers. But, isn't batting average a good equalizer?

No, because it's not just power numbers that are inflated, it's hitting in general. Need further proof, look at that 5'5" second baseman on the Sox.

When Mantle played, he never would have gotten out of Double A, now he's an All-Star.

it was a joke--maybe a bad one.

but talk about a guy who puts in everything he has day in and day out. the previous poster was talking about what people who saw Mantle play would tell you. Pedroia gets a nod from me based on personal observation. That guy contributes in so many ways. Does all the little things.

Before you jump all over me, I'm not comparing Pedroia to Mickey Mantle.

Some other numbers to consider when comparing Mantle to Ramirez:

Triple Crowns: Mantle 1, Ramirez 0 MVPs: Mantle 3, Ramirez 0 OBP: Mantle .412 (19th all-time), Ramirez .410 (35th) All-Star Games: Mantle 20 (13 starts), Ramirez 11 (5 starts) Games as a DH: Mantle 0, Ramirez 296

Ramirez is a phenomenal hitter and a Hall of Famer, but his numbers have been helped by playing in this highly offensive era. 9 of the top 20 in all-time OPS are active players. The other 11 are either Hall of Famers, Mark McGwire, or Larry Walker.

And the idea of Manny being Mr. October is a bit premature. Yes, he's hit a great deal of post-season homeruns, but he's also had a great deal of post-season at-bats. 353 to be precise. 20 of his 24 post-season HRs have come in the ALCS and ALDS. He has a .247 World Series average, with 4 HRs in 77 at-bats

There's really just no way to justify the idea that Manny Ramirez is on the same level as Mickey Mantle, let alone better than him.

He can pull off a pair of Oakley thumps better?

Mickey being Mickey was pointless without Billy (Alfredo Manuel) Martin being drunk first?

Manny had big Papi, Mantle had .... Maris? No contest!!!
