Those of you on the 'chair late spring and early summer may remember my long, drawn out defection and prodigal-eque return as a fan of the Cleveland Browns. After yesterday's game, I kind of wish I would have stayed out why the staying out was good.

He wears the mask to hide the tears.
He wears the mask to hide the tears.

The Browns loss to the hated Steelers was not only bad, it was flat out ugly. The Browns were not ready to start the season. As much as I like Crennel as a coach he did not have the team prepared, specifically with the QB decision (or rather the lack of a decision at all).

Crennel should have realized very early in the preseason that it wasn't going to matter who was going to be playing QB for the Browns, the major weakness of the team -- as it has been since the team's return in '99 -- is the offensive line. Even with the addition of a big-name rookie and a high-profile free agent, the line hasn't gelled and is not prepared to protect any quarterback. Peyton Manning could be the Browns' starting QB and he's end up with 75 yards a TD and 2 INTs.

Romeo needs to name a starter (preferably Charlie Frye) and stick with him for the entire game (or until he gets hurt). It's not going to get any better no matter who's in the game. Swapping QBs every five minutes only makes the chaos on the field even more out of control.

What made the game worse is the ignorance of the fans at the stadium. Why in the world would they chant for Brady Quinn to be put in the game? The only logical sense would be if they dislike him as much as me (for those that missed the defection series, I left originally solely because of the drafting of Quinn), but that's not the case. Those fans actually think Quinn is going to go out onto the field and save the franchise.

Quinn's only been around long enough to learn 10-15 plays and those don't even matter because the only plays the Browns QB needs to know are Pass Duck and Cover and Handoff Duck and Cover. Why would you want your so-called franchise savior to be piled under eight defensive players of the Steelers, Bengals, Raiders, Ravens and Dolphins who would love to get in some extra-curricular hits on the pretty boy rookie?

The key word for Browns fans is patience and a lot us (particularly the ones at the game yesterday) don't seem to have a grasp on that concept. Impatient fans with a bad, rebuilding team is going to make for a long season and some painful Sundays.

Let's hear it for the Tribe and Cavs.

Step one: Go 0-16

Step two: Trade #1 overall pick for a lot of good picks

Step three: Ask LeBron James to play cornerback or something.

Oh and we'd probably have to put LeBron at Right Tackle.

I'm not sure if they Browns even count as a real franchise anymore. If it wasn't for that one playoff game a couple of years back, I'd vote no.

Wait 2 or 3 years for Brady Quinn to settle in. He's gonna be sweet.

I think whoever they decide to put in at qb they need to leave him in to try to develop some continuity within the offense.

I don't know why the offensive line is so bad? They got Joe Thomas who is suppose to be a solid Left Tackle and Eric Steinbeck from the Bengals at left guard. Shouldn't they be fairly decent on the 0-Line. They have never, broadcasted in the LA area so I don't think I've ever watched them. Shouldn't their line be better? Someone help me out?

I was driving through Cleveland (on may way back home from State College, PA) and listened to the Browns' game. I heard the chants for Brady and only snickered because all I thought during Saturday's game (in the "White House") was if Quinn was playing we would have had at least 5 intercseptions ny the 3rd quarter.

It truely was an awsome place to see a game. I was very surprised at the students and how rude they were (I always had a lot of respect for PSU). I never heard F**K You more in my life - just because I had a ND shirt on - it was rather pathetic.

I'm not sure what you were expecting, cpcp. Isn't this why you were considering leaving in the first place? Were you expecting Super Bowl contenders this year? Stick with it--perseverance is its own reward. (Not really, but it sounds good and might keep you going.)

I think that Jaws is the best analyst on TV. Last night on PTI, he called for the Brown's to put in Quinn. As he put it, the other QBs have never demonstrated the ability to play NFL football at a consistent level.

Another thing that Crennel needs to worry about is that if he doesn't make strides this season, he's going to find himself out on the street looking for work.

Personally, I think Quinn would get killed so I wouldn't play him yet. But I'm torn. Do you see the offensive line improving over the next couple of seasons? If not, play Quinn now. Manning had a pretty sad team around him when he started. He relied on his personal ability to read defenses and his quick release to keep himself from getting sacked. Favre ran around like a madman his first season. Trying to stay alive.

The best can overcome offensive deficiencies and help the team improve around them.

I say you play quinn. Whats gonna happen? Are the gonna lose alot of games? They can lose with any one of those three. Troy Aikman and Peyton Manning got thrown to the wolves and they turned out great. I say test him. Palmer, Rothlisberger, and Quinn in one division, not to mention an aging but able McNair.

Being a fan of any Cleveland sport means pain. Thorough, complete, and occasionally debilitating pain, broken up by occasionally periods of moderate hope. Also, heartbreaking sorrow and occasional disgust. That's not what you came back for?

I don't know how Quinn's development and learning are coming along, but I'd be tempted to target him to start a few weeks from now. They've got a pretty tough lineup with Cincinnati, Oakland, Baltimore and NE. If you don't start him this week and hope he gets comfortable before Baltimore, I'd target either Miami or wait until after their bye for the St. Louis game. I'd probably go for Miami, then give him a week to recover/learn/prepare for the remainder of the season.

Honestly, I don't see why Seattle would make a trade like that. They are receiving absolutely nothing with Charlie Frye.
