There are some things about sports I don't like... the New Yuck Muts, the University of Michigan and those ASSCRACK UGLY HELMETS, the Floridamn Gayturds and the Miami Crimicanes. I also think that NASCRAP and professional wrestling are a HUGE waste of air time on television and would rather watch women's Jello wrestling!

Hoosiers hope new coach is the "Crean" of the crop

Do I hear exhaling in Bloomington? With all the problems and distactions that the Indiana University basketball program has had this year, with their former head coach Kelvin Sampson forced to leave for alledged violations and then having some of the players threaten to boycott their next game against Northwestern, the Hoosiers family felt that they needed a change. This may not get them out of hot water but it's a start.

Wednesday morning will be a special time for the Big Ten school. That's when they will annouce that they have hired Tom Crean to lead the team as their new head coach. Crean comes from a school that knows a little about basketball, Marquette.

When he takes over, he will have some work to do and do quickly to maintain some order. He has to somehow right a ship that may be headed for an iceberg in the form of NCAA sanctions. He's already on the short end of the stick, as it were, when IU lost a scholarship for the 2008-09 season. That's part of the penalty that they placed on themselves for Sampson's addiction to cell phones. Crean’s first job will be trying to keep two recruits Indiana has already signed, who have asked to be let out of their national letters-of-intent.

He's also has to find a way to replace freshman Eric Gordon, who said that he may declare for the NBA Draft. He's also replacing former interim coach Dan Dakich. Dakich felt as if he was rudderless in a boat with a group of people that did not want to go in the same direction (players threating to muntiny). He did get rid of some of that dead wood, showing pojnt guards Jamarcus Ellis and Armon Bassett the door. Crean needs to run that program with an iron fist. Not like another former IU coach per se but it comes to that, that would work for me.

So Crean comes into a hornet's nest. There's talk that IU could be on probation for a while. That may mean, in addition to losing some scholarships, no Big 10 or NCAA tournament. Let's hope he doesn't get stung too badly, if at all.

Let's let them exhale. It worked for Whitney Houston.

Great pickup. I wonder who Marquette will grab.

I think Marquette should go after Mark Slonaker. Slonaker was released by Mercer University this past season. He's a Catholic, so he would fit in with Marquette and their Jesuit ideals.

Didn't Crean turn the job down in '06 before Sampson was hired? Maybe Marquette will inquire about Bruce Weber. He is a UW-Milwaukee grad and is kind of underappreciated at Illinios

With IU facing probation, this means more to the future of Marquette at this point with James and McNeal pondering draft. I can guarantee you the Eagles will go after some big names. Being a private school they have some serious money to throw around. Very surprised Crean left in the first place.

Well, when a big school opens their doors, it would be stupid to not walk in. He's going to have a job on his hands, especially if the NCAA slaps them with probation and bans from tournament play.

Maybe they will try to pry Tubby away from Minnesota.

I think they'd have a better chance of bringing Bob Knight out of retirement, though having to deal with Dick Vitale on a daily basis at ESPN might be giving The General some second thoughts about that retirement.

I don't see it happening unless the Gophers buy him out big time. Remember, Marquette is in the Big East. I'm not saying it wouldn't happen, I just don't see it happening now.

In the News

The Los Angeles Angels defeated the Boston Red Sox in the playoffs for the first time since 1986, snapping an 11 game losing streak. It took 12 innings to do it, as Mike Napoli led the Halos to a 5-4 victory. Erick Aybar hit the game winning shot to score Napoli, and Nap was held accountable for 3 of the Angels' runs and 3 of their RBI's. Josh Beckett wasn't the postseason man he usually is, as he only lasted 5 innings, surrendering 4 runs and 9 hits. Jacoby Ellsbury also made history, becoming the first player in postseason history to hit a three-run single. He did it in the 3rd inning, as he hit a pop-up while there was some miscommunication involving Torii Hunter and Howie Kendrick in shallow center field. The Red Sox currently lead the series 2-1.
