Hansbrough wins POY award, will have number retired

From: The Sports Point

It was announced Tuesday, that UNC forward Tyler Hansbrough has won the Sporting News player of the year award. In winning this award, Hansbrough will now have his #50 jersey retired once his playing career in Chapel Hill is complete.

In order for a Carolina men's basketball player to have his jersey retired he must win the player of the year award from at least one of the following media outlets: The Associated Press, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, the National Association of Basketball Coaches, Sporting News, the Wooden Award or the Naismith Award. Thus, there are only eight jerseys retired in the illustrious history of Carolina hoops. Among those Hansbrough will be joining in the front row of the rafters are Phil Ford #12, James Worthy #52, and of course Michael Jordan #23.

We applaud the university for having set standards when evaluating which jersey numbers will be retired. Their process leaves no grey area. Players and most importantly fans have no basis to complain because the requirements are clearly laid out. Some teams (cough cough the Yankees and Celtics) should take the same approach as the Tar Heels and have specific criteria for the retiring of jersey numbers. Hansbrough to become just 8th Tar Heel to have jersey retired (ESPN.com)
