End of an Era: Zach Thomas Released

The Miami Dolphins released Zach Thomas on Thursday, ending his 12 year run with the only franchise he has ever known.  The new Miami regime made the decision, no doubt based on Thomas’ recent concussion issues.  He has not been the same spark plug middle linebacker Miami fans knew and grew to admire since 2006, and unfortunately, it was time.

Thomas, an under-sized, yet over-achieving middle linebacker, was drafted in the 5 th round in the 1996 NFL Draft, the 154 th overall selection, out of Texas Tech.  He immediately became a fan favorite as it seemed he was in on every tackle the Miami Defense recorded.  His stopping the run, dropping back in pass coverage, and taking the occasional ball to the house, have Dolphin fans collectively reminiscing today.

With a year remaining on his contract, Thomas will look for employment with a contender, should there be a roster spot for him.  As I lifelong Dolphin fan, I can only pray that contender doesn’t play their home games in Massachusetts.  It would be a devastating blow to “Miami Die-Hards.”

We’ve suffered enough, haven’t we?

If Thomas plays in 2008, I hope he succeeds, and if the Dolphins can’t pull a miraculous run to a Super Bowl title, then I hope the team he is on wins it…other than that team in Massachusetts of course.

If I had my way, I would like to see him on a NFC contender like Tampa Bay, Philadelphia, or Seattle, to name a few.  If he wears a Jet, Bill or Patriot jersey, I don’t know what I would do.  How would I be able to root against one of my all-time favorite players, on a rival team no less?

So that’s it.  The Dolphins defense is no longer anchored by the seven time Pro-Bowler.

No more juggernaut-like plugs into the gaps of the defensive line preventing a first down.  No more sideline to sideline pursuits of premier running backs.  No more swan dives into the end zone after taking back a “pick 6.”

For 12 years, Zach Thomas led the Miami defense, and in his prime, anchored one of the NFL’s most fearsome units.   While defense reigned supreme in South Florida, offense lacked in the Post-Marino era, and few players did more for the Dolphins, than Zach Thomas.

There have been many debates if Thomas ranks among the greats.  Is he a Hall-of-Famer, or just a gritty, football player who had a nose for the ball?  Well, I say it is certainly the former.

In the last 12 seasons, you would be hard pressed to find a better middle linebacker than Zach Thomas.  If you could, you would be able to count them on one hand.  And you wouldn’t even need all of those digits.

The only middle linebacker that shoots instantly out as a Hall of Fame player is Ray Lewis.  There aren’t many decade long consistent forces at the position, better than Thomas.  I will not be the only Dolphin fan who will miss number 54.

I can only hope he ends up on a tolerable team, which I can still enjoy watching him plug those gaps.  If not another team, I wish him well, and would bet good money to see him pop up on one of the networks as an analyst.

I don’t know if Canton on the horizon, but one thing is for sure…He more than deserves it.

Thanks Zach.

Boy, I think he should retire before he ends up like the other Ex-NFLers who are severely brain damaged.

Nah, he's the perfect subject to wear the new anti-concussion helmet. He'll be laughed at by the other players and get beat worse like the 35-year old MLB like he is but he'll get a paycheck, which is more that you can say for some of the NFL's retirees.

This is a good move for Thomas if he is still fit to play. Many defense players have a strong backside to their careers because of a change of location.

Out of all those teams you would like to see Thomas with the only one I personally see him with is the Eagles.

no eagles interest unless it were a very low risk low cost affair...With Gaither and Bradley on their way up and the eagles having little interest in LBs as is, I don't see how he gets much of anything... You're right, The Bengals could make a nice fit

The Bengals are a good call, but if that were the case, Zach would have to get arrested like, this month.

With Brian Urlacher recently having neck surgery and Lance Briggs looking for a bigger contract, perhaps Chicago is also on the market for Zach Thomas' services.

Not a chance. They are going to be a different team. Just wait until Bill is done.

Thanks! I am hanging on by a thread, but I am very pleased Parcells is running the show. Makes me almost forget about 07. He will rebuild this team to respectablility before the take he field. Then, it's up to them.

Is there anybody left on that team that we've heard of? He joins Trent Green, Keith Traylor, Marty Booker, and L.J. Shelton in the unemployment line. Bill is definitely using the big broom.

And it is a very good thing. The more the move out, the more they expcet to bring in. Booker will be replaced by either Chad Johnson, Jerry Porter or Roy Williams. Alan Faneca is a candidate to come in and help the O line. Plenty of options with that #1 pick. We'll see what Bill wants to do.

Good article. I can see Thomas playing home games in Massachusetts, though. Belichick has a soft spot for aging middle linebackers.

Or maybe he would rather play on a winner next season and take Strahan's job (if he retires).... :)

I think he should hang 'em up. He had a great career, but once you have neck and concussion issues, it isn't worth it. He still has a long life ahead of him, I hope he makes the right choice. If he does decide to keep playing, I'm sure he won't have trouble finding a job

I don't question his desire to play one bit. The concussions are another issue. Look at Steve Young and Troy Aikman.

The Philadelphia Phillies took a 2-0 series lead, as Brett Myers and Shane Victorino led the Phils to an 8-5 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Myers went 5 innings surrendering 5 runs. However, he helped himself offensively, as he went 3-for-3 driving in 3 runs of his own. Manny Ramirez also hit his 27th postseason home run (a three-run shot).
