Does Anyone Care About Griffey's Accomplishment?

Ken Griffey Jr. is about to become the sixth player in history to hit 600 home runs and no one seems to care.

Sure SportsCenter shows the Reds’ highlights every time he hits a home run, but when Alex Rodriguez became the youngest player ever to hit 500 home runs last year, he had a much bigger media throng surrounding him. Rodriguez being in New York might explain it, but when one considers the fact that Junior would be the only player of this era to hit 600 home runs and not have any steroid allegations on his record, the non-news that his story is making is amazing.

Perhaps Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa stole the spotlight by hitting theirs first and in such a close proximity, but if it weren’t for those players allegedly using performance enhancing substances, Griffey would be fourth all time on a list that would look like this: Aaron, Ruth, Mays, Griffey. Pretty elite company.

Not coincidentally, Griffey is the only one of the three modern players to be voted onto the All Century Team in 1999. While his election may have been premature, it illustrated the effect that he has had on the game.

Unfortunately, “The Kid” has spent much of the last seasons of his career hurt in a city that barely ever gets national publicity.

It’s as if many forget that during the nineties, Junior had the hearts of baseball fans young and old. The 10 time Gold Glove winner made plays in center field that still have some players wondering why their home run numbers aren’t higher.

He batted with such consistency and power that he earned seven Silver Slugger awards during the 1990s.

Despite being selected to 13 All Star games and winning an MVP award, his quest for the 600 home run mark hasn’t even raised an eyebrow on the national baseball landscape.

He probably won’t reach Mays at 660 and he will soon be passed by Alex Rodriguez, but his accomplishment should be more than a blip on the baseball radar screen.

Many forget that he once hit home runs at such a rate that he led the American League in home runs per at bat in 1997 and ’98.

Once again, if it weren’t for Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa juicing during the 1998 season, the home run news would have completely focused on Junior who was on his way to leading the American League in home runs with 56 for the second year in a row.

Griffey is no doubt a first ballot Hall of Famer. He optimized everything that a player wants to be in his prime.

During the nineties, fans all over the country were mesmerized by the baby faced center fielder who would show up every year at the Home Run Derby with his hat on backwards and fight for the title despite being the skinniest person in the field.

When asked about steroids, Griffey has claimed that he still has the same small biceps he had when he arrived in the league.

He was also once a member of the most famous father-son tandem ever to play in the majors. (This is another title that was taken away from him and his father by an aforementioned alleged steroid user.)

While performance enhancers may have raised the popularity of some players, they probably negatively affected the honest ones like Griffey.

Hopefully baseball will honor Junior’s accomplishment in the coming weeks as it should be honored especially since it will be something that baseball fans won’t have seen honestly done since Mays did it almost 50 years ago.

I hope he lasts long enough to break Bond's record. The Irony in that would be so sweet.

Ken Griffey Jr was my favorite baseball player growing up, He was the face of baseball, When I thought baseball, I thought Griffey. It's such a shame that he dosen't garner the attention. If his career wasn't slowed down by injuries, he might have broken or at least had been near the HR record. He is a first ballot Hall of Famer and I place him in higher regard over Bonds, Mcgwire, Sosa and all the roid users.

It would be and without the injuries, he would have done it for sure. It's not going to happen now though. Sad stuff.

He is way higher in my book than the users. In my opinion, they shouldn't even be in the hall due to their taint on the game even if their numbers would have been good enough without it. They negatively affected so many players' and fans' lives. They shouldn't be rewarded.

unless you think it goes against the character clause, it doesn't work. it wasn't against the rules then, so they didn't violate any rules, and weren't caught formally

Nice read newbie...but its not that they don't care its sadly that Griff himself doesnt have the media hype that he did back in the day and also its Cincinnati, if he was in pinstripes this would be all over the news, injuries put the brakes on his career but its great that he was able to come back and revive it even if not to the stratosphere it once was

KG is the man. I think that he'll get his proper recognition when elected to the hall. Maybe because he goes out and plays and doesn't stir things up, the writers look elsewhere for their story.

I know that some people would rather e-mail than comment on a public forum, as many have already done, so I do get some response and I say saying that Grigg would be the 4th all time to do it honestly.

Where he is has something to do with it, but I have to think that if this happened five years ago, the media would have been all over it no matter where he was.

Also, they haven't officially been caught, as I said, but there is so much out there to illustrate they probably did it and most are doing nothing to clear their names, probably because they know they cant.

To me the most interesting part about what Griffey has done is his trek from 500 to 600. I remember the summer of 04 when he was chasing 500, and thinking okay he got it that will be the end of Griffey, and now 4 years later he is knocking on the door of another acomplishment. It's easy to do the math of how they he got here, and I have to step back and tip my hat to him.

The fact that Griffey is this close to 600 after so many years of injuries is a testament to the great years he had before the injuries hit him. Griffey is going to be shoo in for the Hall of Fame.

That's right. If only it weren't for the injuries. If you remember, it took him so long to hit number 500 after he got close because of how emotional he got. He's quite a player.

It seemed like it took Sosa a long time to hit No. 600. It is hard to believe it has been 19 years since Ken Griffey had his 1989 Upper Deck rookie card...wonder what it is worth now?

Not sure how much that specific card is worth. I think I have about 30 Griffey cards from throughout his career. Hopefully some of them are worth a good amount or will be some day. Good to know there are some true fans left who care about the statistics that mean something.

Griffey is everything Bonds isn't. He's accessible to the media and fans and will be in the HOF long before Bonds (aka Mr. Steriods) will ever get even one vote.

While it is true Griffey is not in the same category as Bonds, he is not considered "accessible". He is notorious for avoiding contact with the media and fans alike, I have seen him take some pretty ridiculous steps to avoid signing a few autographs or answer a couple questions.

The injuries also affected his baserunning. In 1999 he had 24 stolen bases and since then he has 17 in the last 8 years through 2007. He still needs 420 hits to reach 3000 hits. These are the players that the Mariners received in exchange for Griffey....Mike Cameron (Brewers) Brett Tomko (Royals) Antonio Perez last played for A's in 2006 and Jake Meyer who pitched 8 years in minors with a 14-24 record so the Reds got the best of the deal since they still have Griffey.

The Reds did get the best of the deal, although one has to wonder what Griffey's numbers would be now if he would have stayed in Seattle. Maybe he avoids the injury bug?

All the numbers have been watered down. Manny is near 500 and even I'm only a little excited. And that's not because I accept the possibility that he's juicing, it's just that 500 ain't 500 anymore.  :( Congrats Jr, you deserve this honor and the HOF awaits.

I know that I, as well as the other few very dedicated fans of Ken Griffey Jr. care. Griff was one of the main reasons why I loved watching baseball more than any other sport. He is extremely fun to watch, has a great character, amazing skills, and is a terrific role model for kids. It's a shame that he doesn't care about being recognized as much as all the other top dogs in the business. Thanks Billjordaniv. You're the man, for writing this article.

Hated to hear that Griffey Jr. was not good about giving autographs. Have heard Ryne Sandberg wanted money to give autographs but don't know if that is true and would like to know if anyone had problems with Ryne.

I heard about Reggie Jackson. I friend of my mom's told me that her whole family hates Reggie Jackson. They're all baseball fans, and they used to go to Angels games. He wanted money for autographs and is extremely stuck up and cocky. Guess it runs in the family, huh?

They were second cousins via a distant marriage, which in fact, is no longer, meaning they no longer are. They do not share blood. Reggie and Barry often call each other "cousin", likely more as a term like "buddy" but they are not "blood" relatives.

I never did. I saw him numerous times in spring training and he always signed, from the time he left the clubhouse to the time he reached his car (or the bus). He wasn't big signing on the field, he might sign for five minutes or so before a game, but I never saw him not stop, and I can mention a few other people I can't say that about.

As I said in the article, Griff will be the fourth person to hit 600 who doesn't have allegations of steroid use on his record. There will be 6 overall, but two of those (Sosa and Bonds) have steroid allegations. 6-4=2
