Detroit Lions Year End Review (a.k.a. NTSB Train Wreck Investigation)

That was a fun season, huh? Despite their inability to lose to Kansas City in Week 16 the Lions did manage to finish the year with a run of defeat and futility that will wipe clean any good memories fans had of the first nine weeks of the season. Losing badly to Green Bay’s backups sealed the deal.

7-9 is the best the Lions have done in eight seasons. I guess it’s time to start talking about next year, but before we do that I’ve had two different Lions fans, one a longtime season ticket holder the other a man who can name the various starting quarterbacks all the way back to the late eighties, express the same sentiment to me: that 7-9 may be a peak season. Think about it. Kitna is the best quarterback they’ve had since Erik Kramer, but the Kitna “window”, for lack of a better term, is closing. He’s taken a hell of a beating the last two seasons and the O-line shows no signs of improvement. At most he’s got one or two more good seasons left in him and decent-to-good QBs, which Kitna is, aren’t that easy to come by. Replacing him is going to be difficult and winning now isn’t realistic.

The loss of Roy Williams exposed the offense as being pretty much one dimensional. With Williams out there to create coverage problems the fact that the O-line sucked could be overcome by Kitna’s quick read ability and Martz’s schemes. Martz could put receivers in unexpected locations and Kitna sometimes found them in the 1.5 seconds he typically had before getting hit. Calvin Johnson, as big and as fast as he is, does not demand either a double team or the strict attention of the safety the way Williams does. Maybe he will someday, but not right now and without Williams, no tricks of Martz could confuse the coverage. That the Lions even have a running game would come as a surprise to many casual NFL observers. So there goes the offense, the supposed strength of the team.

Of course Martz has now been fired in favor of coordinator by committee. I didn’t understand this at first. Yes the offense was disappointing but by Lions standards “disappointing” is a smashing success. Then I remembered who the GM is and that nothing can be considered surprising anymore.

Roy Williams is only under contract for one more year and while he’s said he wants to be a Lion for life, that didn’t work out too well for Barry Sanders, now did it? Sanders was as team oriented as any man could be, to say nothing of a superstar, and even he eventually tired of the Lions. He wanted out, the Lions wouldn’t let him, and he retired rather than keep playing for them. He was right to do it. For his own sake, Williams should take heed.

Seven teams finished this season at 7-9, thanks to tie breakers the Lions have the last pick of that group at #15. The two units in need of the most attention are the offensive line and the secondary, but there are holes all over. The linebackers consist of Ernie Sims and the seven dwarfs. The running game is okay in that it isn’t terrible, but Kevin Jones is never going to be a workhorse back and taking other teams failed projects isn’t a good idea either. There are so many holes to fill it’s hard to think that they can be filled.

In short, there isn’t much hope. And if you want to get a little meta with it, there isn’t even much hope for hope. The Lions front office would need to start acting brilliantly for them to even be competitive in division. The Bears need a quarterback, but with one of even Kitna’s caliber they’ll be up there with the elite of the NFC once again. The Packers’ season has been all about Favre in the media, but their defense has been the real reason behind their #2 seed. With a new and decent quarterback either one of those teams could be the power of the NFC North for half a decade, and oh by, the way the Browns are probably dumping Derek Anderson. And let’s not forget that the Vikings have Purple Jesus and an offensive line so large that it can be used as construction equipment. The NFC North, which not that long ago was the most craptacular division in football, is suddenly a tough place to play and the Lions are moving in the wrong direction.

If you follow the Lions or the NFL at all you probably know the conclusion that I’m coming to. He has to go. The longer he is allowed to remain, and if next season goes the way I think it will he might be on his fourth head coaching vacancy by this time next year, the worse it gets. Barring a moment of clarity on the part of William Clay Ford, this spring will be his eighth draft and there’s no reason to think he’s going to get any better on attempt #8 than he’s been on the previous seven. The worst part is that any new GM is going to need to be given three or four years, at a minimum, to turn things around because the cupboard is so completely bare. That clock cannot begin to run until the a new GM arrives and after all the Lions have been through this decade, I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if the current guy is still there five more sub .500 seasons from now.

I’ve been ending these Lions posts with a simple “Go Lions” line. But let’s face it, for a very long time there has been only one phrase…one chant…one idea…that has consistently excited and energized Lions fans and that ain’t it.

Fire Millen.

Several comments:
  • Calvin Johnson doesn't demand a double team because he has hands of stone.
  • How quickly we forget. I'm a huge fan of Sanders, but every summer he held out in order to avoid training camp. Not exactly a "team" approach.
  • Cleveland would be stupid to get rid of Anderson. I don't know his contract status but if they can find a way to keep him, they should. San Diego kept the wrong quarterback.

They can keep Anderson and Quinn next year. They don't have to make a decision this offseason. I say give Derek Anderson the starting job next year and see if he continues to thrive then make your choice the following offseason. Your right, SD did choose the wrong QB, But the Bengals dropped Kitna and kept Palmer, so it goes both ways.

On Madden '05, I played a Franchise mode with the Packers. With stats changing, depending on how you performed, a bad season or two for the Lions saw their stars eventually drop to about 85. Their best players wanted out. Eventually, they were left with a team of players rated between 60 and 75, because they were so lowly rated that their moral couldn't be effected. In the end, I took to signing the best Free Agents for them with the Packers, and off-loading the ones I couldn't afford to the Lions. 5 years later, they were back in the same hole, so I gave up. But I feel your pain. It could be worse - they could have been "relegated", a la European "soccer."

Which is most likely to occur first in 2008?

A. The Lions finally fire Matt Millen. Detroit burns to the ground in delirious celebration.

B. The Knicks finally fire Isiah Thomas. Spike Lee buys the script. Denzel turns down the role but a very bored Cuba eagerly practices his Zeke impressions.

C. Brit chokes to death on her own vomit laced with booze, downers and big macs while driving her Explorer over to K-Fed's crib to score meth.

Tough to decide, ain't it?

Martz wasn't the problem in Detroit. If anybody, they should've gotten rid of the defensive coordinater. Detroit needs a "Bill Parcells" to wipe the slate clean from this organization

The Lions problem is not the QB, it's that horrible offensive line, and Millen is obviously confused, and keeps thinking that drafting wide receivers are the key to success.

I guess I could've saved myself 800 words by just saying this, but Martz, Kitna, the O-line and everything else are just window dressing. Millen is the problem. I hope he isn't "always" the problem, though he very well could be. And I don't think Cleveland would be smart to dump Anderson, but that doesn't mean they won't do it. Millen may be the stupidest GM in the League, but he isn't the only stupid one.

The first problem is William Clay Ford - he's too loyal to Millen. Next problem is Millen - this is the same guy who traded away Dre Bly for 2 4th round picks and 2 players (Tatum Bell & George FOster)... Tatum was placed on the IR as soon as Jones can run, Foster was sooo bad that when he was benched and his replacement went down coach Rod inserted the 3rd stringer and not Foster while the 2 4th round picks were sooo bad that they were CUT - couldn't even make the practice squad --- this is the same guy (Millen) that the Lions would have to "trust in" to get something decent in return for Roy??? Even a package of Roy WIlliams and Shaun Rogers still really won't do any good...

Just my opinion, but what should've happened in last years off season is --- taking that the trade with Denver was inevitable, fine - so be it --- BUT Oakland was looking for ONLY 4th round pick for Randy Moss --- use one of the 4th round picks to get Moss - there's a very good WR -- they get Moss, then there would be no need for Calvin Johnson - then use the 2nd overall pick for ohhh I don't know --- Joe Thomas maybe???

While there were holes in the Lions this year, next year there's going to be more next year -- here's a small list of players that WON'T be back: Damien Woody, Kalimba Edwards, Shaun Rogers (via trade), Roy Williams (via trade), Fernando Bryant (retirement), & Tatum Bell (won't resign) and that's the short-list.

Now the problem lies in not only these players but picking up other players (via draft or FA) to improve the team - this is a problem due to the salaray cap... the Lions franchised Jeff Backus then overpaid to keep him, they also WAY OVERPAID Cory Redding - who's next on the overpaid list??

I was reading Tom "the killer" Kowalski's (Lions insider) blog this morning and found this FA question with his response: Q: "In the 2008 Free Agency, there are several big name free agents that the Detroit Lions could desperately use like Alan Faneca, Flozell Adams, Jared Allen, Terrell Suggs, Lance Briggs, Carlos Dansby, Marcus Trufant, and Asante Samuel. Will the Detroit Lions attempt to attain any of these players, and if so, will these players even come to Detroit?"

A: "Depending on some of the moves the Lions make, like dumping the salaries of guys like Kalimba Edwards and, possibly Shaun Rogers, will determine how much money and flexibility the Lions will have to operate. The problem with looking at free agency right now is that you don't know who is going to re-sign with their own team or who will be franchised. As far as players wanting to come to Detroit, I think it's all about the money. And, yes, the Lions will have to overpay to get their guys -- just about every team outside of New England has to do so."

Now onto the Offensive Coordinator: Jim Colletto... why was this guy even promoted? He was the O-line coach -- the WORST O-line in all of the NFL (allowing 50 sacks) and now HE's the OC???? Instead of promoting him and sharing duties with Kippy Brown, coach Rod should've just gone with Kippy Brown here...

FINALLY: The Defense... OH MY GOD were they BADDDDD twice they allowed 50+ points & 4 times they were blown out by 31+... the question still remains --- why wasn't Joe Barry fired along with Martz?

As it stands right now, there is ZERO HOPE in this team. There's always cliche' of 'there's always a light at the end of the tunnel'... unfortuantely for the Lions, the light is a train coming right at the blowing full steam ahead that will smack them square in the face! Ever since I moved to Detroit, thanx to my brother in-law, I've been a season ticket holder for this train wreck but next year --- I will NOT renew my ticket... I will not go to every game next year - if I really want to go to a game -- maybe the Thanksgiving Day fiasco, I'll buy that games' ticket off of my brother in-law...
