In which Manny Ramirez continues his march to 500, Josh Beckett looks very sharp, and Mike Mussina is pounded again...

In his first two at bats in tonight's game, Boston Red Sox slugger Manny Ramirez hit his 494th and 495th career home runs, leading the Sox over their arch rivals, the New York Yankees by a score of 7-5.
With his first home run, Ramirez passed Lou Gehrig and Fred McGriff into sole possession of 24th place on the all-time home run list. Eddie Murray is next on the list with 504. Ramirez now has 55 home runs against the Yankees in his career. J.D. Drew (2), Jason Varitek, and Dustin Pedroia also knocked in runs for the Red Sox. Also in the good news column for the Red Sox was ace Josh Beckett looking very solid, allowing 6 hits and 3 runs over 8 innings, while striking out 5 and walking only 1 for the win in by far his longest and best outing of the young season. Closer Jonathan Papelbon came in to close it out in the ninth with a four-run lead and made it interesting, but eventually struck out pinch hitter Hideki Matsui to end the game.

For the second straight start, Mike Mussina was roughed up by Boston, this time only lasting 3 innings, allowing 5 runs on 7 hits including the two home runs to Ramirez, with only one strikeout and no walks. I haven't actually seen any of Mussina's action yet this season, so maybe someone reading this can fill me in -- what's the problem? Is it his velocity? His control? Or is it a combination of the two? I can't imagine manager Joe Girardi putting up with this kind of performance from Mussina for very long, although he might need to stick it out for at least a while before they can put prized prospect Joba Chamberlain into the rotation, considering they want to limit him to around 150 innings this season.

W: Josh Beckett (2-1, 5.12)
L: Mike Mussina (1-3, 5.75)
S: N/A N/A

Bright spots for the Yankees included Derek Jeter continuing to look good at the plate after returning from injury, knocking a key two-run single in the fifth. They also received fine work from two unlikely sources in the bullpen, Kyle " pr0FF3ss0r " Farnsworth and ex-National (never a good sign) Billy Traber. Melky Cabrera also added a home run in the ninth inning, his 3rd of the year and only the first off of Papelbon so far.

Coming Up Next...

The Red Sox head home and welcome in the Texas Rangers (7-9, 4th in AL West), with Luis Mendoza (0-1) taking on Daisuke Matsuzaka (3-0). The Yankees travel down to Camden Yards to take on the Baltimore Orioles (9-7, 2nd in AL East), opening with Phil Hughes (0-2) vs. Daniel Cabrera (0-0).

Considering he is coming off injury and his age, I think he has pitched so far much better than anyone expected, myself included. His first start, he was hurt by a couple broken bat hits and an error, although he did give up a two run bomb to Vernon Wells.

He then pitched as well as I've seen him pitch his next start, 6 IP, 2 hits vs. Tampa.

Last Friday, I blame Girardi for the loss and not Mussina. Granted, Joe is trying to earn the respect of a veteran team, so he asked Moose if he wanted to pitch to Manny or walk him and face Youkilis with the bags drunk. Naturally, as any pitcher would do, he said he wanted Manny. Two run double, game over.

Looking at tonite's boxscore, he threw 72 pitches in three innings, even though he didn't walk anyone. Manny got him twice, so nothing you can do about that, but looking at the no walks and high pitch count it looks like the Sox hitters were fouling alot of pitches off.

Mussina's only walked three in 21 innings counting tonite, but he's also only struckout 9, so his loss of velocity certainly has made him more hittable, but, as the Yankees fifth starter, they really aren't asking much of him anyway. No reason he shouldn't make his next scheduled start.

And you heard it here first, Chamberlain's move to the pen is permanent.

I started laughing when Manny showed up early for Spring Training. I knew he was going to do well. It's his contract year and he's in his mid 30's, so of course he's going to try harder. Just look at Jorge Posada or Mike Lowell of last year; they both did amazing. Manny is getting off to a great start, which makes me think of something. In June/July, if David Ortiz bounces back, how about switching Manny with David Ortiz? I mean, think about it: Manny is going to hit for power and average, and he hits really well (I think even better than Ortiz) with runners in scoring position. Other than the fact that Manny can be lazy on the bases, I don't see why not.

I don't know, I'm not sure I like the idea. I'd rather have Ortiz come up in the first inning every game and get those extra at-bats, if only because he's left handed. Most pitchers are right-handed, so you're going to get an advantage over the long run there, as well as forcing opposing managers to make more bullpen moves, since the #3 hitter will get more PAs over the course of the season than the #4.
