Chad Johnson: To trade or not to trade, that is the question....

Chad Johnson of the Cincinnati Bengals has been the subject of trade rumors since the end of the regular season.  He just turned 30, and signed a 6 year 35.5 million dollar contract in the offseason heading into the 2006 season.  Bengals coach Marvin Lewis has gone to the media recently to say that he will be a Bengal in 2008.  If you were an executive in Cincinnati, would you trade him?  I will go on the record and say they will, and here are a few reasons why I believe they do.

First Chad can be argued as the best possession receiver in the league since 2003.  His lowest reception total being 87, yardage total being 1274 and lowest YPC registering in at 13.4 yards.  He may not be the most prolific scorer, but during this span, his lowest TD output was 7 in 2006.  These numbers clearly label him as an elite receiver.  Many regard him as streaky, but I can't, the numbers don't lie

Second is his age.  Ocho Cinco just hit the big "30".  This is not the end all age for recievers like it has been known to be for running backs, but he is no longer a spring chicken by NFL standards.  Being the fact that he is 30, and has not missed a game since his rookie season may attribute to his toughness, but to me that is a red flag for a guy who takes a beating, and can possible break down.  Law of averages says he is due to miss time, why not let it be on someone else's watch?

Lastly is his mouth.  As entertaining as he can be, this year we have seen that he is getting under the skin of the other players in his locker room.  His on-field spat with Carson Palmer during prime time was not a good sign in my book.  The fact that he seems to be laying seeds in the media about wanting out of Cincinatti also is a bad sign as well.  When a player does this, he can drastically reduce his value for the team trying to get a return on him (ie Randy Moss).

I think Cincinatti would be able to grab a few draft picks in this years class if they were to pull the trigger.  Not to mention the cap savings can be used to bring in some veteran help on defense.  I would think a second round pick would not be out of the question, along with a low rounder or future draft choice as well.  With those picks they can address other areas of need.  This is a team that obviously has needs that would be fixed the fastest via a strong draft.  The offense can survive with TJ Who's your mamma and Chris "hide your daughters" Henry for the time being.  A cheap veteran free agent receiver along with an big athletic receiver from this years draft would be plenty to keep this team in the top third of the league on offense.  The market for him is at it's highest now, before he begins really running his mouth.  Minnesota, San Francisco, Tennessee, Oakland, and Kansas City are all receiver starved and should line up at the chance to acquire him.

You trade him if you can get the right value for him. You don't just say "I'm gonna trade this guy, what will you give me for him?" You first find out what you can get for him, THEN decide whether or not to trade him.

I agree with feeling around for what they could get for him, but they really have to start pressing the issue before he opens his mouth, ruins his value, and his teammates want nothing to do with him.

But does Philly and D-Nabb want to deal with another personality at WR? I agree they need him, but Reid may not want him

can they trade Reid for Johnson and hire a new head coach?

First of all, Andy Reid has accomplished more as an eagles head coach then any other...

secondly, ITK, I rationalize that it's a low risk, high reward scenario. McNabb has 3 years left on his contract...none of it is guaranteed. Johnson has 4 i believe. Assuming all goes well the first year, then you get 2 and 3...if things go down, it won't happen any faster than the TO crisis, at which point McNabb will be on his way out and Johnson could be shown the door just as easily.

McNabb truly has one last hurrah left in him. Think about Steve McNair in those years after his superbowl run...that's where McNabb is at right now (they're very similar QBs, but I'd argue McNabb is not only a better throwing, but a better QB overall).

And if it fails...the team needed to be blown up anyway, as Kolb would then take over...after 2011...when he'll have around 4 years on the bench...sorta like that QB in Dallas that sat in waiting...

he seems to be turning out ok...

Reid has accomplished a lot, and for that I am thankful. But, I personally feel his success with the Eagles is over. It has been noted that I am calling for the end of the Reid Era in Philly...

I love Spikes, but he has been injured an awful lot the last few years. Cincy would be better off with the picks and the cap space. Spikes is a beast when healthy, but Cincy can't afford to gamble. They have enough of character issue players they gambled on already and lost

One problem with that, Takeo Spikes has done nothing but take shots at the Cincy locker room and the lack of motivation since he left

I think this guy is good, but Cinci is stacked and could use him as a chip to get someone in a position they need. I say they see what they can get, and if it is somethign that WILL make them better, then do it.

I think that the Bengals might want to take into account whether they should get rid of Chad or the coaching staff. It seems from Carson Palmer's end of year comments that not all the players believe in the current staff.

7-9 in 2007, 8-8 in 1006, 11-5 in 2005 and winning their division. Notice that there's a decline. Until they get some more talent, it's going to get worse before it even thinks about getting better.

Do you really think any of the teams you mentioned can afford to give a few of this years draft picks including a 2nd round pick for one player? These teams need draft picks and will not become a contender with the addition of one WR. Who will throw him the ball? They all need more help in other positions. Not to mention, do you really think Ocho Cinco would go to a team with a worse offense than Cincy? I don't.

You mean to tell me that Minnesota, a team that is a QB and a playmaking WR away from being a playoff team wouldn't make this move? Tennessee has a defense in place, a running game and Vince Young, who could definitely use another weapon to get the ball to. San Fran has a young emerging D, a decent O-line, a stud RB, and has holes at WR and QB. Who cares what order you fill the pieces, its about filling the pieces

Deals involving one player for another are exceedingly rare. So any deal would most likely be for picks and picks alone. I'll tell you one team that will look at him seriously: the New England Patriots. Belichick loves Chad Johnson. And don't think for a minute that the Pats won't trade Moss in the off-season to cash in on the pinnacle of his value. I doubt Johnson will become a Patriot, but the Pats will look into it.

After failing to win the Super Bowl with the New England Patriots, Randy Moss will be a free agent. The Patriots cannot trade him unless he is re-signed to a new contract first.

i just don't understand when chad johnson became a problem. He's always been productive and he's always been loud. However as far as i can tell he never bashes his teammates, never gets in trouble with the law or breaks team rules. Why's everyone so down on him all of a sudden this year?

If Chris Henry could stay out of trouble and stay on the field, this would be a good move for the Bengals. They'd dump a big contract and a big mouth, but still have two big-time receivers. Henry could be very good in the NFL if he gets his acto together.

Do you really want to trade Chad Johnson and then have Henry get another suspension? I'd rather put up with the Chadster than bank on Henry staying out of trouble.

It is a value issue, but really look at what the Pats gave up for Welker then take that deal and improve it by about 50% and you have the worst case scenario for a trade. (assuming, big time, Chad keeps his mouth shut while terms are worked on) At this point the bengals almost have to trade him, unless Palmer steps up to his defense. There are plenty of teams that need a wideout and even if Moss and Stalworth are free agents, Johnson is a good trade.

I'd love to see Ocho Cinco in a Pats uni. Stallworth is gone for sure, and Moss may or may not be. I'd like to see the trade go through and Moss stay a pat. New England would start Moss, Johnson, and Welker at WR. That'd be a b*tch to cover
