Belichick Wins his Second Coach of the Year Award

Earlier today, Bill Belichick, the New England Patriots head coach, was announced 2007's NFL AP Coach of the Year winner. Yeah, yeah, yeah, we ALL saw it coming. Belichick and the Pats had a fantastic season, becoming just the second team in NFL history to finish the regular season with a perfect record (16-0). Twenty-nine of the fifty voters (a nation-wide panel of media members who cover the NFL) voted for Belichick. Bill has done a great job at leading this team to 16 wins this season, but I really think that there were a few other coaches that didn't have as many great players like New England that should deserve more credit. I am not saying they deserved Coach of the year honors more than Belichick, I just think we should recognize the other great coaches, too.

AP Coach of the Year

1. Bill Belichick, New England Patriots (29 votes)

2. Mike McCarthy, Green Bay Packers (15 votes)

3. Wade Phillips, Dallas Cowboys (2 votes)

4. Jack Del Rio, Jacksonville Jaguars (2 votes)

5. Tony Dungy, Indianapolis Colts (1 vote)

6. Jon Gruden, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1 vote)

I am shocked that Washington Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs didn't get a single vote. I think Gibbs should have gotten more votes than McCarthy. Gibbs kept the Redskins together through rough times in '07, including when they lost safety Sean Taylor a day after he was shot in his own house in Florida. Since then Gibbs, and the 'Skins lost just one game (17-16 loss to Buffalo).  Washington is on a four game win streak, and after their 27-6 win over division rival Dallas (13-3), Washington clinched the sixth seed in NFC Playoffs, and has a good chance of upsetting the number 3 seeded Seattle Seahawks in Seattle.

I think it's pretty amazing that they have been able to succeed the last few weeks, especially Dallas, even though they were resting their starters that game. Washington's defense was beat up, and I really didn't think they would give up just 13.25 points a game in their last 4 games. I haven't even mentioned that three of their 7 games were against New England (16-0), Green Bay (13-3), and Dallas (13-3). Gibbs made just one HUGE mistake during the season, which cost them a win. The mistake came when Gibbs called two straight timeouts to try to "ice" the kicker against Bills, which gave them a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty, Buffalo's kicker then had an easy FG which gave them the 17-16 win.

Call me crazy, but I think Joe Gibbs should at least come in second place, ahead of Mike McCarthy (sorry, Mike). But, congrats to Bill, who won his second Coach of Year award in four years.

"Any time we win we're excited, with the success we've had this season, [the Giants] game puts a certain little bit more of a degree of satisfaction in that game because of the culmination of the regular season. But, at the same time, we've got plenty of things that we need to work on." Bill says on NE's perfect season.

McCarthy got screwed. I don't think I saw Belichick take the youngest team in the league to a first round bye and turn Brett Favre from washed up to MVP contender.

I don't know how you can complain about the head coach of a 16-0 team winning coach of the year. Normally COY goes to someone who turned around a bad team from the previous season, but this year is different, cuz, you know, the Patriots didn't lose a single game. Any other year ad McCarthy should have won it. It isn't a slight toward McCarthy at all, but 16-0 is 16-0 is 16-0.

well Rawb, there's two trains of thought...

One is 16-0...and you're right

but the other is turning a team around. They both have strong cases. With tthat said, I do see how you can complain, as Shula did not win COY in 1972...

The again, had spygate not happened, i bet it would have been 45 votes for and 5 split...

Any coach that can turn Randy Moss into a team guy, that's one heck of a coaching job. Well done and well deserved, BB. McCarthy also did a great job, but he lost a game. Sucks for him and the Pack.

Meg is right. 16-0 is 16-0. The voters thought that was the biggest thing this year, and gave it to BB. McCarthy would have won COY with his season any other year, it just so happens that he gets stuck playing second fiddle to something that big. On the other hand, you can't be that dissapointed if you are a Packers fan. It would be like having an unbelievable individual season last year, and getting overshadowed by LT. You didn't win, but second place in COY this year is pretty remarkable

I give all the credit in the world to the team as a whole. 16-0 is 16-0. But cheating is cheating, and BB was found out this year. I don't think his cheating is what made them 16-0, but I really think coach caught cheating rules him out as COY. Personally, I think it is disgusting. Cheat your way to the top kids, it's OK buy the NFL.

You shouldn't be rewarded for cheating. I don't think anybody is simple enough to think that Belichick winning COY is an endorsement of his transgressions. I think it's more the fact that his team went 16-0 this year. Had it been 15-1, he wouldn't have won COY. But this is a rare team and coaching accomplishment.

No, I don't think this is the first time someone has gotten ahead by cheating. Like I said, I don't even think that is what makes him so good. I oppose personal endorsements or rewards for a guy who got CAUGHT cheating. The AP is proping up a known cheater, and that is what I disagree with.

personally, I think steel town's point is only valid in conjunction with Shawn Merriman's transgressions last year...

With that said, you're only real rationale for not giving the 'chick the award is just that, because he got caught cheating...I personally am fine with that...

I do find the fact that merriman was disqualified and belichick was not for similar seasonal awards kinda stupid...

beyond that, CoY is a hollow award...who was the COY in 1999 (Vermeil I believe) or 2001 (Guessing Jon Gruden...)...no one really remembers all that much...or cares too much unless its their coach...and only for a little while...

Was Merriman disqualified? I thought they made that rule for this season onward that any player suspended would not be eligible for awards/honors. And if you asked Belichick which he'd rather have: his first round draft pick or the COY award, I think he'd take the pick.

How did neither Romeo Crennel or Brad Childress not get any votes?!?! Would either have gotten a vote had their team made the playoffs? These two did the most with the least. Who had the Browns and Vikings written off before the season began? Everyone did, even most of their fans. Yet both of these teams finished TIED for the last playoff spot in their conference. Browns 10-6! What odds would vegas have given to you on that one in august? Probably more favorable than the pats going 16-0!

I'm stuck on this one. Although Belichick cheated his team is undefeated. But he did cheat and got caught doing it. Plus his punishment didn't really fit the crime. Couldn't they have given it to McCarthy? He's sort of having the same story as Lovie Smith did last year.

I'm late to this party but I agree with Steel Town. I think it is pathetic that you can get caught cheating and still win an award like this. The message that we send to young athletes is horrible. Take Steroids like Shawn Merriman and win the ROY. Get caught cheating like Bellichick and it will be ignored if you can win. Bill Bellichick coached his team to 16-0 and that is an amazing accomplishment and is due in no small part to his coaching ability. At the same time, I think that when someone gets caught cheating, whether it is Roger Clemens, Shawn Merriman, Rodney Harrison, Floyd Landis, or Bill Bellichick, they should be eliminated from award recognition for that year.

The Philadelphia Phillies hit 4 home runs in Game 4 of the NLDS to defeat the Milwaukee Brewers, 6-2. Jimmy Rollins hit a leadoff home run to start the Phils' offense. Then Pat Burrell (who was 0-for-8 in the series heading into the game) hit 2 more home runs, including a pair of back-to-back jacks with Jayson Werth. This marks the first time the Phillies advanced to the NLDS since 1993. Can they defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers and make it to the World Series? Only time will tell...
