BREAKING NEWS: NFL London 2008 Teams Announced

by SSreporters
created January 27, 2008, last edited March 28, 2008

A breaking report from ESPN, it looks like the NFL has decided which two lucky teams are off to London for the NFL International Series. The candidates are....

Seattle Seahawks

San Diego Chargers

New Orleans Saints

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Kansas City Chiefs

And the winners are......

New Orleans Saints vs. San Diego Chargers!

The Chargers are denying this report, and Dean Spanos said he is cautiously optimistic about this. This would mean San Diego is the road team, and the Saints will give up a home game. Breaking report, we'll see how the events unfold in the coming days.

I really don't understand why somebody would want to give up a precious home game to go overseas in the middle of the regular season...

Because the NFL tells them to and they don't have a choice becasue the NFL League Office rules all.

If only the EPL would follow suit and send a game or two this way.

You mean like the tours that Chelsea, Man United, Everton, Aston Villa, Fulham and others go on every summer in the US?

Staging a Prem match over here is impractical since their schedule and table is strictly built on home and away fixtures. You go to the Premier League heads and tell them "we want to take away a teams home game and stick it in the US where we already get the highest TV viewership of any non-european country, sell the most EPL jerseys in a country not in Asia and where we already sell out exhibition matches.

You wouldn't get the clubs to agree to do it, since they have way more power then any NFL franchise could dream of, and you would have to prove that it makes sense moneywise, which it doesn't.

LA, You'll notice I never said it would be practical. I am aware of the tours but I don't really find them compelling.

But from the NFL's stand point, you are sending LT and Reggie Bush to London where is seems as the interest in football is reasonably high. Plus you add those two guys and you have some big name super starts which should help. It will defiantly out draw the Giants-Dolphins game that was there this year.

yeah but they are used to it at this point. nothing that the NFL hasn't thrown at them before. plus with the way they played last year I would venture to say that their ticket sales will probably be down.

I was thinking more of the poor New Orleans citizens that rely on Saints games for their livelihood. The people that run the souvenir shops, concessions, heck even ushers (like Rawb). People like these need home games as their city is still trying to recover from Katrina. The NFL is just stupid sometimes. They're more concerned with marketing the Bush vs. Tomlinson showdown than they are with the people that support their product here at home.

O I completely agree with you. I was being sarcastic in my previous post. I'm from the great state of Louisiana and know first hand what that franchise means to the state.

I am so happy that its not the Giants again. I think they made the right choice of a good match up out of the teams that were finalists.

The Chargers and Saints should each be given an extra preseason home game (just play one less "away" game) to help offset lost home gate regular season revenues.

here's what i think: I think seattle should have been in this vs a bad team and the abd team gives up the home game. here's why: seattle lost a fun china game earlyier and should get this for fun to make up. you put em vs a bad team and then the bad team loses home game because it is not a precious to them because they are not a "contender"

In the News

Jacksonville Jaguars' offensive tackle Richard Collier was rushed to the hospital after he was shot 14 times while sitting in a car with a former teammate outside an apartment complex earlier this month. One of the bullets severed his spinal chord, and is paralyzed from the waist down. His left leg was amputated due to blood clots. Doctors are expecting to discharge him soon. On behalf of ArmchairGM, we wish Richard Collier all the best.
