A real national champion: The Final Bracket

Well, this is it. The regular season is over, and my final bracket is unveiled here. Without further ado:

(1) Ohio State (Big Ten) LSU (SEC) (2)
(16) Central Michigan (MAC) Florida Atlantic (Sun Belt) (15)
(8) Kansas (At large) USC ( Pac 10) (7)
(9) West Virginia (Big East) Hawaii (WAC) (10)
(4) Oklahoma (Big XII) Virginia Tech (ACC) (3)
(13) BYU ( Mountain West) Central Florida (C-USA) (14)
(5) Georgia (At large) Missouri (At large) (6)
(12) Florida (At large) Arizona State (At large) (11)

Missed the cut (BCS rank):

Illinois (13)

Boston College (14)

Clemson (15)

Tennessee (16)

Wisconsin (18)

For previous weeks, see Week Seven, Week Eight, Week Nine, Week Ten and Week Thirteen.

Looking back at the initial bracket, only ten teams included then (in Week Seven, mind you, not the preseason) made it to the final bracket, and that includes two teams (Oklahoma and Arizona State) who spent one week each on the outside looking in.

I have already addressed issues such as season length, game sites and the fate of the lesser bowls in the initial post. Let's focus on the overwhelming benefits of this system here.

A common knock on a playoff is that it dilutes the regular season. Look at this bracket and ask: Does the regular season matter? Ask Boston College, who were a two seed before a couple losses knocked them out of the picture. Ask Tennessee, who was an SEC Championship win away from playing their way in. Ask South Florida and Connecticut, who were both riding high in the Big East before West Virginia reasserted their dominance. I'd say the regular season still matters.

In a sixteen team playoff, undefeated Hawaii gets a shot. They may very well get blown out by USC in the first round. But there is no way to rationalize a team going undefeated and not even getting a sniff at a championship. If you want to argue that they played a weak schedule, that's fine, but you better start by getting the big boys to stop ducking Hawaii and other dangerous mid-majors like them. I'm talking to you, Michigan.

As things currently stand, two-loss LSU gets a shot at one-loss Ohio State. But what about two-loss teams such as Virginia Tech, Oklahoma, Georgia, Missouri, USC, West Virginia, Arizona State, in addition to one-loss Kansas and previously mentioned undefeated Hawaii? Could they have solved their own problems during the season? Sure, but their warts are no worse than LSU's, or Ohio State's for that matter. That makes at least nine teams who have just as legitimate a claim to play for the title as LSU and OSU.

While the BCS shuts its eyes, covers its ears and screams "I can't hear you!" over and over, my playoff gives them the shot they rightfully deserve.

I take issue with the inclusion of Florida -- and a lot of other teams -- but mostly Florida. They went 9-3 without a single interesting out-of-conference win. They lost two (!) games at home. One of those losses is to Georgia -- who they now get a second bite at. In fact, look at their theoretical path: Georgia, Oklahoma, Ohio State, LSU. That's right -- two rematches that they already lost, the last one at a neutral site. The other big problem is that the seeding is all wrong, but there's nothing we can do about it. Hawaii went undefeated, but you have him at #10 (I realize that it's based on BCS rank). If they are truly deserving of a title shot, give them a moderately easier path than USC, LSU, V'Tech, Ohio State (in theory). Or, if you think they're undeserving of a title shot, give Georgia them in round one, instead of an on-paper superior Florida team.

I hear you, and as you noted, I am simply using BCS rank to determine seeding. If a committee is formed, basketball tourney-style, to tinker with seedings, I am perfectly OK with that. Just give me a tourney, and have all eleven conference champs in it.

Florida just lost one game at home DNL... get your facts straight before posting. As far as non-conference wins... name a team up there that has an impressive out-of-conference schedule, Ohio State? Don't think so.

On ESPN the Florida/Georgia game was listed as a home game for Florida. It was played in Jacksonville, not Gainesville, and was actually a home game for Georgia. At least, according to the Florida Gators website. Take it easy Anon.

AF -- My bad. ESPN, as JM notes, had the UGa/UF game listed as a Florida home game. As for impressive out-of-conference wins, the point is that Florida has two strikes against them already -- three loses (1.5 at home, how's that?) and was, at best, third in their conference. None of the other teams have those two strikes, and Florida can't make up for it by laying claim to a great win.

Florida's point differential was impressive... Of their 3 losses, the only one they couldn't have won with a little luck was against UGA. Besides, the SEC is a beast week in and week out, I say include as many as those teams as you can, especially ones that a) had a relatively tough schedule, and b) were dominant in their wins.

Davis -- I agree, but if that's the case: why not just have the SEC champ get a bye to the national title game?

Well, they're not that much stronger than the other conferences. :) My only point was that, in a year where 2-loss teams are playing for the national title, why not give a shot to a really strong 3-loss team who played like a 1-loss team but had a little bad luck and played a tough schedule?

DNL, sorry for being snippy earlier. :) I believe the Gators are right where they deserve to be... I didn't mind the loss to LSU or even the loss to UGA (can't believe I just typed that)... The only loss that cheesed me off was the one to Auburn. Should have never lost that game and gotten held to only 17 points!

The more I look at this 16-team bracket, the more I love it. It solves all of the problems with this season (everyone who ought to have a shot does), it gives some love to the mid-major conferences, it doesn't dilute the regular season at all, and it gives us a true champion decided on the field. Why won't college football do this? My god, how many sham champions do we have to endure before they give us what we want?

No, you said it yourself the regular season does not matter: BC beats Va Tech the second time and they are in, regardless of their 2 losses to unranked opponents. Same thing with Tennessee. Beat LSU, and they are in, actually tie LSU over 60 minutes and then they'd be in by default. WVU lost their national title shot because they could not beat Pitt, but under your system that loss did not matter. They could have sat White, sat Slayton, thrown the game and have been ok. That is not college football. That is not keeping the importance of the regular season. Instead, they had a cupcake game at the end of the season, and they could not win. That loss cost them their dream of a national championship. Wow, that is powerful, it is cruel, it is Darwinian, and it was settled on the field. Why rob Pittsburgh the value of that win? That game was the highlight of their season.

Do Troy, BYU, Central Florida, and Central Michigan deserve title shots? Did they even qualify for the BCS like Hawaii did? What have they done to EARN (win) their way into a chance for the National Title? Nothing! Central Michigan has 5 losses! Troy has 4! That's keeping the value of the regular season?

Missouri and Kansas had their chances but could not win when it mattered, let's reward such clutch play with giving them a second chance because we like things clean and simple. NO! They blew it! Tough! If they wanted a title shot, all they had to do was prove their high rankings were well deserved. That is done by winning. They lost. Worse, they've shown they cannot win when it matters, so let's put them under pressure again so they can choke again. Is that fair to Oklahoma? Give a team you've beaten twice another chance at the National Championship? Yes under the BCS they don't have a shot, but would they want one knowing the cost? Knowing that you can beat a team twice and it doesn't matter! If they beat you the third time that's the one that counts. That's like the person loisng at rock-paper-scissors crying "Best 2 out of 3" after they lose! Wait, do the math, it is worse than that.

But let's ruin all the wodnerful upsets we've had this year. Let's make them matter less, if at all, and have a clean and easy to understand tournament so that people who don't really care about college football can watch for 4 weeks and feel like they participated and have a clue.

Pip, if you don't like BC potentially getting in over Virginia Tech with a win in the conference championship game, then take that up with them, not me. That is a concern with the conference championship game format, not the national championship playoff format. I just take whoever they tell me is their conference champion.

As for West Virginia losing to Pitt but still making the tourney, it does matter: they dropped in the seedings. Just looking at the first round, they went from a potential matchup with Troy to Kansas, not to mention a second round game against Ohio State. You don't think that matters?

Besides, the current system treats early losses and late season losses inconsistently. West Virginia had sufficiently recovered from their loss to South Florida, not because that was a tougher opponent per se, but because it happened two months ago. Missouri went from #1 to out of the BCS altogether because they lost their last game. Was it a big game? Of course, it was for the Big XII Championship. But Georgia didn't even make the SEC championship game and are rewarded with a BCS date with Hawaii at the Sugar Bowl because their two losses earlier in the season are more easily forgiven. LSU has even gotten away with a chance at the title with two losses because they have better timing. Is that really how you want to determine your champion? Timing?

You say Missouri and Kansas blew it, but how did they blow it worse than LSU? OSU? They all lost. Period. And how did Hawaii blow it? They won every game and got ducked by better teams who are too afraid to play them.

As for Troy, CM, CF and BYU, I say: yes, they do deserve a title shot. They will most likely get waxed in the first round, but they deserve a shot.

Our difference in opinion centers on this, Pip: You think it is a greater travesty that teams get a second chance after they "blew" their first one. I think it is a greater travesty that teams who are no more guilty than others are screwed.

They may deserve a shot, but your right, those teams will get waxed. I watched Clemson drop 70 on Central Michigan earlier this year. They wouldn't have a shot.

Side question: What do you think of the three-team rule in the BCS? You did not go with for your bracket, and I am curious as to why?

I think that's a good point. Two Conferences have 3 teams, and a 5-loss Central Michigan team gets in over an Illinois team that has 2-3 losses but beat the Big 10 Champ

The BCS should be concerned with the three-team rule because they are trying to fit teams from six major conferences plus any potential mid-majors into ten bowl spots. They are also trying to spread the BCS dollars around.

My playoff format doesn't care about that. After the automatic bids, I want the five best teams, regardless of conference. If that brings in three (or more) teams from one conference, so be it.

And FP, Central Michigan didn't get in over Illinois. Central Michigan got an automatic bid for winning their conference, while Illinois missed out because they didn't win their conference and weren't high enough in the BCS rankings to get an at large bid.

Pip, you have consistently acknowledged that I have presented a solution as opposed to just crying as many other BCS bashers do. Perhaps you can return the favor and answer a question always avoided by BCS supporters in your upcoming defense of the BCS: If a playoff is good enough for every single other sporting event in the world, why is it not good enough for college football?
