A call for Jonathan Papelbon to relax

Between Brett Favre, Jeremy Shockey, Roger Clemens, and countless others, I have to admit that I'm getting pretty tired and annoyed by the diva attitude among these athletes sometimes. It has reared it's ugly head in the form of Boston Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon.

In his own infinite wisdom, Jonathan Papelbon decided to open mouth, insert foot and suggest that he should have been the pitcher to finish the All-Star Game on Tuesday. Yes, a RED SOX closer suggests that HE should have closed the final All-Star Game in the sacred ground of their archrival, the New York Yankees. Not to mention that it would he would have been in spite of their Hall of Fame closer, Mariano Rivera. There is no question that he should be commended for being the competitior that he is and for wanting to be THE GUY to close the show. Yet, I cannot help but laugh at the fact that he would be OUTRAGED over the fact that his suggestion would spark outrage among the New York media and faithful in the midst of a special weekend for the Yankees.

Is it possible for someone even at the age of 27 to be this naive and gullible?

This Yankees/Red Sox rivalry has intensified to enormous levels over the past decade.  It has even gone downright nasty. There's the construction worker and huge Red Sox fan who buried a David Ortiz jersey deep in the grounds of the new Yankee Stadium. And then there's the drunken woman who ran over two Red Sox fans outside a local bar because they were taunting her for having a Yankee logo in their car. This rivalry has even gone too far for me at times. So how could Jonathan Papelbon NOT think that this could cause some sort of outrage? Especially considering that Mariano Rivera is having a stellar year in what is supposed to be the downside of his career?

Papelbon and his pregnant wife were roundly booed and heckled by Yankee fans during the parade down 6th Ave. This soured his whole weekend and reportedly he didn't even care to pitch in the All-Star game anymore. Yes, there should be a "Shame on You" sticker posted to anyone who decided to boo his wife who is innocent in all of this, but being in Boston, Papelbon HAS to have enough media savvy to know that these statements weren't going to fly in New York on such an unbelieveably special occasion.

What makes this even more strange is that it seemed like Papelbon has the personality to brush controversy off his shoulders and to keep moving forward. His carefree personality has endeared himself anong Red Sox fans and baseball fans alike. He's won a World Series ring at the age of 27 and has definitely gotten the better end of the deal in this rivalry. If I were him, I wouldn't give a good kitty what fans of my archrivals thought at this point. Yet, he develops SHOCK and AWE that this caused controversy? This is diva-type behavior.

So here's to hoping Papelbon relaxes, takes a chill pill and lays off the coffee. He has a great career ahead of him. Being a diva doesn't help.

It's not helping Brett Favre.

I think he was more upset at the fact that the insults were targeted at his wife. If this was your run-of-the-mill Red Sox-Yankees series over a weekend in July in the Bronx when he said something inflammatory and Yankee fans shot back, he would have just brushed it off...

You know how much he and Hank Steinbrenner love poking fun at each other. Apparently, his reaction to the flipping of the birds from Yankee fans was flipping his ring finger adorned with his World Series ring...more indicative of his personality, I think.

That and the fact that the Post chose to basically ignore the fact he later told reporters he wanted Mariano to close. Given, this isn't the New York Times we're talking about, but still.

That being said...I'd much rather have him focus on his pitching (his ERA has gone from 1.95 to 2.43 since June 18).

Well, the NY Post is the most noncredible paper in the history of print media. But Papelbon cannot be surprised that a powder keg was set off by this. It clearly effected him all weekend. Terry Francona has too much respect for the game to not let Mo close the game. He was better off not mentioning it.

I think he knew the powderkeg would be set off (but he was, after all, just answering a question), he tried to defuse it, but it didn't work. I think he was just surprised it went off as much as it did, to the point where it went out on his wife. There was no doubt who was going to close the game. Ever. Francona did the right thing. I'm just glad Evan Longoria, Grady Sizemore and Billy Wagner saved Paps' ass (pun intended :)).

Hey, Paplebon, the only reason you're even in the freaking All-Star game is because your manager got to make all the decisions. So, yeah, STFU and relax. In 25 years, you can take your whatever kid you have, go to Cooperstown, and pay the 20 bucks so you can go inside and have your picture taken next to Rivera's plaque. How pregnant is his wife, maybe he's just got himself a case of blue balls.

He didn't deserve to make the All-Star team.

Mrs. Papelbon is due on New Years Day, so that would make her...3 months along-ish. Don't know from experience about the blue ball thing, so I'll let you be the judge.

He said something stupid (surprise). He paid for it. It's unfortunate his wife felt threatened. End of story.

The NY press decided to completely ignore some of Papelbon's comments to get folks riled up. The NY papers failed to mention that Papelbon referred to Rivera as the "Godfather of Closers" during the interview and that he felt Mariano had secured his place to close the game. Paps simply said that he would love to close an All Star Game.

Of course, any reliever wants to close ANY game they are in, whether it's a Little League game, a regular season MLB game, a World Series game and yes, an All Star game. He gave the correct answer and at the same time, he praised one of the top relievers ever by saying that Rivera should get the nod. This comment was conveniently ignored by the NY papers.

So, congrats to all of you who are bitching and whining about Papelbon. The NY press got exactly what they were looking for, a bunch of idiots fired up over half truths.

If someone could show me where Papelbon used the word "should" I'd be much appreciative. I keep hearing people claiming Papelbon said he "should" start the All-Star Game, but every quote I've read has him saying "I want to close."

Also, if I missed some sort of meeting about "should" and "want" being switched, could someone fill me in? It must have been in the Bronx or something.

Papelbon's an idiot, and he shouldn't have said anything like this that would lead to headlines. You have to learn from Bill Belichick. The press can make a mountain out of a molehill. But they can't make a mountain out of nothing. So don't give them something like this, then hope they're responsible/intelligent enough to know the difference between "should" and "want."

Kelsdad, of all the players on the All-Star team, Papelbon is the one you single out as "not deserving it?" You don't even claim that better relievers were left off. You simply disagree with Francona/the players' selection of more than 4 relievers. Did Papelbon run over your dog or something? Some of the shit you come up with to trash him is ludicrous, even for you.

So the NFL conspiracy plan went like this?

1. Wait for Brady to tuck the ball in the snow game against Oakland, make the right call according to the rules, then hope Vinatieri makes game tying and game winning field goals

2. New England somehow beats the Steelers, preferably with big plays on special teams

3. New England beats the Rams with a last second field goal

He's also got 2 rings as Giants' defensive coordinator, but I'm sure you'll find some excuse to ignore those, as well.

It would drive me insane for other QBs as well but for one Brady is not there, he's the greatest Patriots QB of all time by far (Tony Eason is what, 2nd?) but nowhere near the way they hype him.

If you think it was a bad call, that's one thing. It wasn't, and you just proved it by saying "He didn't even tuck the ball."

"When a player is holding the ball to pass it forward, any intentional forward movement of his hand starts a forward pass, even if the player loses possession of the ball as he is attempting to tuck it back toward his body. Also, if the player has tucked the ball into his body and then loses possession, it is a fumble."

The fact that he hadn't tucked the ball is why it wasn't a fumble. But if you still disagree with the call, or think it's a stupid rule (the rule still exists in the same exact words to this day), then fine. That's a fairly justifiable opinion.

But to even suspect some sort of conspiracy is insane. The points about how miraculous the Patriots comeback in that game are evidence that there was no fix. How come the refs didn't help the Patriots before that play? Or after it? And where was this fix when a holding call brought back a Tebucky Jones fumble return for a TD in the Super Bowl?

If the pats won the SB next year, it'd certainly be a debate...

The Pats: 4 rings in 8 years

The Steelers: 4 in 6 years

The Pats have Spygate to the Steelers Steroids possibilities

Of course, the big one is the number of years it took the pats and the fact that they lost one (though one could argue, 4 SBs and an AFC Championship is better)...then again, the Steelers never had a salary cap to deal with...

It'd be real interesting...

Bill Belichick the greatest ever? Tom Brady the greatest ever? Don't know, don't care. All I know is that 10 years ago the Patriots were a 3rd rate organization. Now they're amongst the elite. And an interesting sidenote to the whole comparison of "dynasties" in different generations. The Patriots are the only team to even get to a Super Bowl multiple times in this decade. As great as the Colts and Steelers have been the past few years, they've only been there once.
