AGM Linebacker and I will bring the pain.

I'm a sports fanatic. I hail from Nelson County Virginia, and thats where I learned to be a Virginia Cavalier fan. I also learned to be a Dallas Cowboys fan because I hated how good the Redskins were doing. I've played sports at almost every level with the exception of being a fulltime professional, as a result I have a great perception on the sporting world. I love to talk sports and I've never been shy to share my opinion with someone.

A Legend Hangs it Up

Today marks the end of an era… well sort of. It is the end of an era that many thought had passed several years ago. Baltimore Ravens quarterback Steve McNair retired from the NFL earlier today, and with him gone the NFL has lost one it’s true warriors of the gridiron.

For those who watched McNair’s final season they saw a man struggling to make plays, and find the open receivers. However, if you think back a decade ago to when McNair came into the league, and you’ll remember just how great Air McNair really was. Before he became the lumbering veteran with the Ravens, he was the young gun gambler who could jump over you or run through you. Steve began his career as a runner, and was forced to transform into a passer when injuries took away his wheels. Steve McNair was one of the last hold over’s from the Houston Oilers. With his retirement the last of those wide open Run and Gun days go with him.

Too often people forget that McNair was the leagues MVP in 2003 and in 1999 he took the Titians to the brink of a Super Bowl against the greatest show on turf. The second half of that game was dominated by McNair’s will to win. Sadly that would be as close to glory as he would come. The Titians gambled away their future to put together that Super Bowl Squad, and they were relegated to salary cap hell for the next four seasons.

McNair played hurt every week. For the majority of his career he was never able to show his true potential because he was too injured to practice. He only suited up once a week and he gave it his all. For a quarterback that’s a difficult process to go through. He never had time to build a relationship with his receivers. He just had to wing it.

It’s almost funny that Steve McNair and Brett Favre would retire in the same year. They both played the game in similar fashions. More importantly there is no doubt that they laid it all out on the line for their teams and their fans. One thing is for sure, there will not be another Air McNair.

What is sad is that he never won a title....and 1999 was a special season. That was my very first Super Bowl. I'll miss ya McNair.

Scary thing is, SSR, I remember watching SB XXX, and I was only 3 years old. I have been told by a thousand different people that I have a very good memory.

Yeah, an amazing Super Bowl but an amazing run to even get there. Irony can be a cruel mistress. The Titians got 1 yard to execute the Music City Miracle, and they couldnt buy 1 yard to win the Super Bowl.

He was such a physical freak in college : just never had enough to get over the hump & win the Big One. I thought when he came into the league that he would be a future hall of famer....although he had a very good career : not quite HOF material.

Used to hate it when the Steelers played the Titans. Always seemed like McNair would come up with some damn play to get the yards...and often, get the win. He was one of my favorite non-Steeler players.

Not sure if I have a favorite non-Steeler player. But, McNair was a great QB when he was healthy. But, he was certainly banged up alot. He certainly reminds me of McNabb (maybe it's the name?).

Haha - I know what you mean about non-Steelers. How about this: when it was Neil and Kordell at QB...I'd rather have had McNair.

He helped break ground for so many QB's that now are in the NFL : Mc Nabbb & V. Young are two examples. He was an incredible leader who did whatever it took : did not care about stats - just wanted to win. Had a CANNON of an arm when he came out of college.

It's sad to see him retire. He was one of the most (if not themost) underrated QB in the NFL.

Maybe not the most underrated - Flutie, Cunningham and Stewart were all really good, and really overlooked, QBs

Also, it was 2003 he won the MVP - co-won it with Manning, as I recall - not 1999.
