Who should be in the top ten all-time?
Who should be in the top ten all-time?
Proposal for a new perspective on ArmchairGM scoring...

Statistics sometimes tell the whole story but many other times they can be thrown out the window. So here is a new formula to help see who's the top user here at ArmchairGM. Take it or leave it, but first read it...

Who is ArmchairGM's best user? To figure this out statistically this is the formula that will be used:

Total Points = (Thumbs Up - Thumbs Down) + (Published Opinions * 200) - (Unpublished Opinions * 100) + (Edits * 25) + (Gifts Received *50) + (Referrals * 100)

The new total of points will come from the following:

  • Total thumbs up minus total thumbs down will compute each user's comment score. For some users who have not been misused enough, they received the minimal on the top 100 list because there is no way of telling actually how many times they were min used. Come'on people, being bigger jackasses...
  • Published Opinions will be multiplied by 200 points. From where does the number 200 come? A user receives 100 points for writing an opinion and 100 more points for when that article reaches the front page...
  • If an opinion was written and it did not hit the front page than it is a unpublished opinion. These opinions will be multiplied by the 100 points it would have received if it had hit the front page and then subtracted from the total score...
  • Edits are still worth 25 points...
  • Gifts received (meaning people like someone and sends them stuff) are still worth 50 points...
  • Referrals are dropped down to 100 points...

So I plugged the numbers of the top (mostly active users) into the formula and here are the results:

*** Please allow leeway for human error...

So there it stands, a new ranking system (not that there is anything wrong with the one in place), but it does give more credit to users who may deserve more credit...

  • Roblefko and DNL are still ranked one-two all time...
  • Romiezzo is bounced to fourth because Awrigh01 vaulted up to the third spot...
  • Alex Holowczak also bounced up; a total of three spots...
  • Thecrookedcap went from seventeenth to sixth!!!
  • Davis21wylie also moved into the top ten from the outside, with Tylersalt staying right on his tail...
  • Christof remains one of three in the top ten to not relinquish their position; DNL and Roblefko being the other two...
  • Falcon02520 drops a few spots but remains in the top ten...
  • JuTMSY4, SSreporters, and Yakob878 all drop out of the top ten...

Please leave your comments/arguments/criticism/compliments below so that I can promptly ignore them...

Too much credit for unpublished opinions...

I haven't written anything for a while...i admit that

but when i do, its always published...I don't write crap, 4 sentence articles or games (which were also total BS)

I mean, obviously this sucks because I'm not in first...or close to it... Anyways, harkin back to the old scoring style which was (i think) 4 or 5 categories and scoring was based on your amounts in comparison to other users...aka the user with the most comments got the highest rating in comments...same with edits...opinions, etc and then it was essentially averaged

Good idea, Falcon. That's a pretty cool system you've come up with, but I was told there'd be no math.

I hope nobody gets offended at me, but I'm going to go ahead and lay all my cards on the table.

  • I think it's cool that people are quantifying their contributions on this site, but it's never been about the points for me.
  • I'm known mostly for my comments, which for whatever reason strike a chord with the other contributors, but I actually like editing more than anything else.
  • Writing articles is a lot of fun, but I don't have original enough ideas to write. I mean, I'm not nearly as original as some of the other users around here, or really any of them. I mean, my last couple articles have been about our fantasy league. Not exactly Pulitzer Prize material.
  • I'll be around more this summer, which will hopefully give me more time to work on this. Doesn't have anything to do with this new points system, I'm just plugging it in the hopes that I'll get some help with it.

Agreed. I just had this conversation with someone the other day. It's not about points for me, either. I can honestly say I have learned something from just about every one here, (yes, even you, the bleepin' Red Sox fans).

We each have our own strengths; writing, commenting, editing. The points shouldn't be broken down any differently just because someone chooses to remain behind the scenes.

I do think comments (and the thumbs up/down) have too much value...if an article gets 120 comments, on the surface, that's awesome. Then you look at them, and 115 are two users in a pissing contest about how good Tom Brady is or whether the Yankees suck or not, totally irrelevant to the article, which is about soccer.

And as long as the subject of changes was brought up, there are way too many Admins, at least unproductive one's. Admins should be held to a higher standard contribution wise.

The true strength of ACGM is the encyclopedia, not the opinions. Without the encyclopedia this is just another blog. Personally, I think that edits should be worth more. Not that I have a ton of edits vs. other users. The editors devote far more time to this site than do those that just write articles.

Funny thing I just noticed the "new ratings" - they almost mirror the all-time edits rankings. The only difference is switching Alex and I (I have more edits, he has a better score) and Christof is not in the top 10 in edits but is #9 in score.

Commenters are like Juan Pierre..look at their stats and they have 200 hits every year, then look at the rest of their numbers and realize how valueless they are.

Erooster is right, editors first, writers second, commenters third.

Look at it this way, without the first two, what is there to comment on?

I don't know that they're valueless, exactly. They might be overrated (I certainly am), but there are less valuable things out there (to borrow your analogy, Andruw Jones for one certainly has less value at this point). I think commenting is a valuable part of AGM, it's just not the most valuable.

There's a time and a place...

Actually, False Prophet and I tossed around a live blogging idea about a 8 months ago to sorta fix the problem...

In essence, he and I were going to do a game a week, but it would be closed door (well, anyone who wanted to join, could...but not on AGM)...then we'd edit it for the good stuff (aka no play-by-play) and post it as an article

This clearly has been done before, by many others (both on and off AGM) and it minimizes point value while maximizing the best part of live blogging

Additionally, I understand the concept...its difficult to find outlets to share enthusiams over soemthign like the Pistons-Magic series in a place like Seattle...i mean, how many seattlites really care?

Hence the reason for a live blog...and the reason i like to set up "The Day in Baseball" lockerrooms...but I'm not gonna go: "Utley sees the 3-2 pitch...strike out"

No...more like "Holy shit...Adam Eaton's pitched 4 scoreless?!"

and then you get gems like Kelsdad explaining Adam Eaton's finger to me...that's the good stuff IMO

I agree with you, Cheezer. Referrals are definitely undervalued. Who the heck is going to recruit user for just 100 points? It's hard enough to get new people to sign up as it is. Edits? Sure. I'd consider "some of them" undervalued. Some edits, for example, require a lot of work, such as Tmil's AGM MLB Players Project. It takes a while to get all that stuff done. On the other hand, little spelling errors don't deserve a lot of credit. That's why we have the minor edit button. If only people were honest and would fairly say that some of their edits were "minor", so we could count minor edits as something and "major" edits something else.

Every thumbs up received should be a base number of points. If you include thumbs down into the equation, then one's score will go up as well as down, and people won't like it if they contribute to the site yet their score goes down.

Voting should be rewarded some points, perhaps not as many as right now, but voting in polls, player rankings, and on articles makes the site deeper.

Recruiting should be a massive amount of points, and maybe it should go up after every recruit. Recruit #1: 5,000 points, #2: 6,000, #3: 7,000, etc.

Is it time to introduce a 3rd kind of article? Right now we have published and unpublished. How about the admins go around and decide if an article is full or not full. An article that has sufficient words, and thought, and maybe a picture, but doesn't get promoted is still a good article and a good contribution to the site, and people should be rewarded for that.

Also, how much is a new locker room topic worth?

I really like the recruiting idea...perhaps a tier system (i.e. 5k for first 10, 6k for 11-20, etc)

I also really like the article categories...and they'd help Alex immensely. That being said...what about bonus points for the featured article?
