A-Rod Was Better Than the Babe

Alex Rodriguez is rapidly becoming recognized as the greatest player in baseball history. Now in his fifth season with the New York Yankees, the team that has won more championships than any other team, considers A-Rod a true Yankee and the best player ever. It is virtually certain, barring a catastrophic event, that Rodriguez will be baseball’s all-time lifetime home run king, probably ending his career with an almost incomprehensible 900 home runs.

An "Average" A-Rod Season The following briefly presents an average A-Rod season, based upon his playing 162 games:

Runs Scored = 127
Hits = 197
Doubles = 34
Triples = 2
Home Runs = 44
RBIs = 127
SB = 22
CS = 5
BA = .306
OBA = .388
SA = .578

Ruth or Cobb Was Considered the Best

Until some individuals associated with the Yankees discovered that A-Rod may be the greatest, Babe Ruth or Ty Cobb were considered the best. Since Ruth was a Yankee most of his career, it is A-Rod v. Ruth.

Based on 162 games season, Ruth’s numbers follow:

Runs Scored = 141
Hits = 186
Doubles = 33
Triples = 9
Home Runs = 46
RBIs = 143
SB = 8
CS = 8
BA = .342
OBA = .474
SA = ..690

Ruth Has Better Statistics

Ruth led A-Rod in every offensive category except for doubles (33-34) and stolen bases (8-22). Can this be accurate? Could the media, or at least those with ties to the Yankees, be in error? Well, let’s use neutralized statistics as produced by Baseball-Reference.com.

A-Rod

Runs Scored = 118 Hits = 187 Doubles = 34 Triples = 2 Home Runs = 43 RBIs = 118 SB = 22 BA = .301 OBA = .382 SA = .569

Babe Ruth

Runs Scored = 131 Hits = 176 Doubles = 32 Triples = 9 Home Runs = 43 RBIs = 134 SB = 8 BA = .330 OBA = .461 SA = .664

Why A-Rod is the Greatest

Both players do slightly worse with neutralized statistics, but Ruth still has an enormous statistical edge, so how can A-Rod be the greatest? The answer is simple. One reason might be that at the end of the 2003 season, Rodriguez was considered the greatest shortstop in history, Honus Wagner not withstanding. Ruth played the outfield, and it was his offense immortalized him (forget his off the field activities). Shortstop is a much more highly skilled position than left or right field, and to make things worse for the Babe, he insisted on avoiding playing the sun field.

Yankees' Greatest Third Baseman

Hold it a second. A-Rod is considered the greatest of all Yankees’ third basemen? In deference to future Hall of Fame Yankees’ shortstop Derek Jeter, A-Rod has been a third baseman since 2004. There goes the greatest shortstop in history argument. And didn’t Ruth pitch a little? Yes he did, despite the fact it was with the Red Sox and not the Yankees when he pitched.

Ruth Was a Pretty Good Pitcher

In 1915, at the age of 20, Babe won 18 games for the World Champion Boston Red Sox, and the following season, he won 23 games. The season after that, he won 24 games. What would happen if there were a game in which A-Rod had to face pitcher Babe Ruth and then Ruth had to face pitcher Alex Rodriguez?

A-Rod's Advantage Over the Babe

But A-Rod has a major advantage over the Babe. Alex can still sign autographs, appear as a special guest at various functions cost huge sums of money to attend, and he can be a spokesman for his team and for Major League Baseball. Alex Rodriguez is a living cash cow whose value can only increase. Babe Ruth is dead.

The House That A-Rod Built

The Yankees are tearing down baseball’s cathedral after this season. The new ballpark will be the "House That A-Rod Built." After all, how can Babe Ruth build TWO ballparks? Rodriguez may be the best player in baseball, although some might have the temerity to disagree. Having the best player in baseball to initiate the Yankees’ new facility is a major feat, but it pales in comparison to having the greatest player in baseball history do it.

I am still here, and yes. A few days ago, some in the media were pushing that idiotic view, so I had to respond. The article is the way I did it. But seriously, as he approaches Mays, Ruth, and Aaron, we are going to hear this more and more.

Babe Ruth was such a good pitcher that he held the record for consecutive scoreless innings pitched in the World Series from 1918 till Whitey Ford broke it in 1961.

probably ending his career with an almost incomprehensible 900 home runs

You're saying that A-Rod will probably hit 900 homers?

He's almost 33...assuming he plays to age 40 he needs another 376 dingers to reach that (which in and of itself is a damn good total)...

so, given the rest of this year (say 3/4s of a season) and 7 more seasons that's be 48.5 homers per season

Now A-Rod has hit over 40 eight times with five of those being over 45 homers...

You're gonna tell me he's going to do it another 7 times...past age 32?

I'm calling bullshit

A-Rod is certainly the better HGH athlete, and could have been a NFL quarterback, I don't doubt. But ' greatness ' encompasses more than stats or even ability. The Babe saved baseball after the 1919 scandals. He elevated baseball singlehandedly after WW1, and therefore is The Daddy of All Sports as we know them today. Has A-Rod thrown a no-no or hit more homers than entire AL teams? Then, I rest my case.

And your rationale for A-Rod being better is:

A) He plays shortstop

B) He has worse stats

C) He's not Dead

I agree with you, but once he gets the record, IF he gets the record, the perception will be almost as powerful and important as reality. There will be a constant stream of the question, "Will he hit 900?" All the crap that goes along with it will be present.

Yes, JuTMSY4, but it is NOT my rationale. There is NO comparison, and there can never be a comparison, but the attempts will be made, especially with the new ballpark next season.

I don't see them ever giving "house-building" credit to A-Rod -- he's only been a Yankee for, what, 5 years? More likely, it will be known as the "Temple of the Holy Jeter"...

Yeah, he keeps implying that he's satirizing some popular sentiment, but he's not saying what the source is. WHO is the person saying that A-Rod is better than Babe? The only person I read that from is LouGehrig, but he’s claiming to skew the subject. This is very confusing.

I like how you say "was" better. "Is" he no longer better?

A-rod "was" better than Ruth, if we were living in a parallel universe were Babe Ruth never existed and Alex Rodriguez "were" God...

Better yet, A-rod "was" better than Ruth if I "were" God...

Ruth is dead, but he is still the king of baseball. That title will remain with him for eternity...

A-rod to this point has probably signed less autographs over the course of his career than the Babe did during his career...

Stats are inflated because of the smaller ballparks, more compact ball (meaning it goes further), the quality of pitching is significantly worse than eighty years ago, and, oh yeah, in Ruth's time he cared about winning championships not statistical awards...

If you want to say that A-rod is the best of his generation. That would be fine because you could make a legit argument for that. But don't compare his ass to the Great Bambino. Stats mean shit because if it weren't for the Babe then baseball may never have developed into the mainstream sport it is now. Then A-rod would probably playing soccer...

Oh, if it isn't obvious, I disagree with your view...

To compare these two is mind blowing. I am not the smartest person when it comes to sports,the history, stats etc. but even I know that you just don't do that. To anyone in the media who would support the idea that A-rod even compares to Babe Ruth shame on you.

I believe everyone should look at A-Rod's pitching record compared to Babe Ruth's and the rest of the Babe's stats. The closests batter to HIT like the Babe is A-Rod and the cloests pitcher to hit like Babe is Carlos Zambrano. IF you looked at your history Yankee stadium used to be a bigger field and they shrunk it after 1935.

Quite frankly, A-Rod could hit 900, 1,000 home runs and it wouldn't matter. He'll never be better than the Babe. Or Mays, Mantle, Aaron, Gehrig, Musial, Ted Williams, Frank Robinson...just to name a few.

This is an interesting article, LouGehrig. However, you're comparing apples to oranges here. You can also say that back in the day, Ruth hit 714 home runs when the fences were what? 400+ feet? A-Rod hit about 150 homers in one of the easiest parks to hit a home run in. Plus, all of the walls were brought in a while after Ruth's time. You're talking about two different eras. However, there are plusses and minuses for both players' arguments. So, I'm just going to leave it at that.
