04 Peyton Manning vs. 07 Tom Brady

With Tom Brady breaking Peyton Manning’s single season touchdown record I took a look at the two and the record breaking years. Manning’s in 2004 and Brady’s in 2007.

Peyton Manning broke Dan Marino’s single season touchdown record in 2004 by throwing 49 compared to Marino’s 48. Some other Peyton stats from that season: He started all 16 games and only played the first quarter in the final week. He completed 336 of his 497 pass attempts for a 67.6% completion rate. Manning tossed up his 49 touchdowns and only threw 10 interceptions. Peyton threw for 4,557 yards averaging 9.2 yards per completion. His offensive line only allowed him to be sacked 13 times and fumble 5. His quarterback rating for the season was a record 121.1 and he did have a remarkable season before losing in Foxboro to the Patriots in the AFC Championship game.

Tom Brady and the Patriots completed a record season going 16-0. This season Tom Brady broke Peyton Manning’s record. Here are his stats for the 2007 season. Tom started and played most of all 16 games. He completed 398 of his 578 attempts for a 68.9% completion rate. Brady tossed 50 touchdowns and threw only 8 interceptions. He was sacked only 21 times and fumbled 6. He finished the regular season with a 117.2 quarterback rating. We will have to see what Tom Brady and the rest of the Patriots can do in the playoffs but I am sure it will be big.

In 2004 Peyton Manning was throwing passes to Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark, Marcus Pollard, Brandon Stokley, Brad Pyatt, and Aaron Moorehead. While in 2007 Tom Brady was tossing his touchdowns to Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Donte Stallworth, Jabar Gaffney, Kyle Brady, Ben Watson, and Kevin Faulk.

Another key thing I believe that should be mentioned is that Peyton Manning plays for the Indianapolis Colts who play their home games in a dome. That means he plays 8 games a year in a dome. The Colts also play the Houston Texans who play in a dome and they also played the Detroit Lions in Detroit that season which is a domed stadium. 10 games in the controlled environment of a dome and only 6 outdoors, while Tom Brady plays for a team who does not play in a dome and plays in the bad New England weather. The only game the Patriots played in a dome was in week 9 against the Indianapolis Colts. 15 outdoor games, most in the northeast where the weather is not great.

All in all I believe that both quarterbacks are two of the greatest to play the game, and are both future hall of famers. Who do you think is the better quarterback?

They are both great quarterbacks and I put Brady a little bit ahead just because if I had to win one playoff game I would take Brady. I am not very definative in my choice though as I would rather wait until both of these players careers are over so that I can reflect and then judge thier full body of accomplishments.

Make no mistake, Tom Brady can thank his lucky stars the Packers didn't pull the trigger on the Moss trade first.

Indeed, didn't the Packers have everything ready to get Moss, but it ended up falling though?

This is just one of those debates there's not really an answer to. Brady has proven this season his true potential and greatness with an arsenal of receivers similar in quality to Manning's. It also puts into perspective how good he was when he was throwing to Reche Caldwell last season.

I love them both. If I have to take one, I'm taking Brady.

The trade was in place and ready to go but never happened because Ted Thompson said "No." So I guess if you call that "falling through" then yes, it did fall through.

If I needed someone to come through in the clutch? It'd be Brady.

If I wanted someone who can totally dominate a game and confuse defenses, Manning.

All in all both are equal QBs, I personally think one is not better than the other, screw the stats. These two will go down as the best QBs to play the game

Personally I think this season Brady showed he's the best QB ever to play the game. I know people throw 'the greatest ever' tag around a lot but as a Patriots fan I think we are seeing the best quarterback ever. I have a ton of respect for Manning and up until this year I would have taken him over Brady for fantasy purposes but this year Brady showed he can win and put up the numbers. If 19-0 happens, he's the best, the argument starts with who is number two...it may very well be Manning.

There's a lot more than 19-0 than just a quarterback. I think if 19-0 proves anything is that Randy Moss may be the best receiver ever.

19-0 means more than just offense in general. You're right, it's not just the quarterback... just ask Brushchi, Seau, Thomas, or Harrison.

Favre has the numbers and the rings, and injuries can happen at any time... plus, how knows when these guys will retire... so for now Favre is the best ever, but I have a feeling Brady and Manning will be passing him on this list by the time they are all done playing... (btw, Brady has before expressed interest in retirement... he claims that after the three titles he already has, what is the point in playing anymore... Brady could be the best ever... but does he want to be?)

Brett Favre never had a Randy Moss. He never had a Jerry Rice. He never had a Marvin Harrison. He made Bill Schroeder a fackin' 1,000-yard receiver! That's why he's the best.

I agree that 19-0 takes more than just a quarterback, all the pieces have to fall into place but the QB is arguably the most important player on the field. We have seen where teams without a solid QB can go and now we are seeing what a team with the best QB and one of the strongest receiving corps can do. Brady has won without Moss and co. He led the Patriots to the AFC Championship game with Ben Watson and Reche Caldwell (who has barely played this year) as his leading receivers. True Farve has all the numbers and he's got a ring so you could make the case for him or Manning or a handfull of others but in my opinion Brady is the best. Again just my opinion and hey the Boston fans did win homer of the year so I guess there is something to be said for that.

Before Manning won the Super Bowl, I would have gone with Brady as being better because of his ability to excel in the playoffs. But now, I think they're on the same strata of greatness. Whose better? Who cares? It's just fun to watch how these guys play.

Brady is not the greatest of all time by any means.....yet. He is close, he is incredible his year. Again, the QB is credited with no regards for the receiving corp, which is definitely one of the greatest in the NFL. The receivers are a back drop yet again because Brady is the poster boy.

The quarterback has many different responsibilities he needs to do. Whoever covers those responsibilities the best is considered the best quarterback. Superbowl rings? That just proves how great a team is; I think Corey said this, but I'm just restating it. You could have friggin Rex Grossman in Tom Brady's place and they could still be a decent team... with a decent defense, Wes Welker, Randy Moss, and a good coach.

2 things:

1. Corey, Moss IS the most talented WR in the history of the NFL bar none. Rice was the better reciever because he cared and worked hard, and stayed dedicated. Moss lost some years in Oakland.

2. Tom Brady is the better QB for a reason I have rarely heard. O line. Look at the Indy Oline until this year. Probably 4 of those lineman will be HOFers, and 1 is a perennial pro bowler. Brady currently has Matt light guarding his backside, 3 middle of the pack starters, and Logan Mankins, who is an exceptional young player. And Brady plays outside, and not in a dome.

Brady will go down as the greatest quarterback to ever play the game and in the NFL it is all about winning and Manning doesn't come close to Brady..

Check out Manning's first 7 years in the league from 1998-2004 and compare them to Brady's 2001-2007..not even close

Brady..... 2001-2007...86 Wins in 110 Games

Manning....2001-2007...66 Wins in 112 Games

Brady vs Manning head to head 7 Wins-3 Losses

And people tend to forget that Manning plays a minimum of 9 games in a dome environment every year and 1 game in Jacksonville...

And people also fail to recognize that Manning had the luxury of a Expansion Team and a new division of the AFC South in 2002..

Comparing Manning to Brady by using team accomplishments is not fair. That's like saying Clinton was a better President than FDR by looking at the economy. However, Brady might go down as the greatest quarterback to blow a 16-0 season by not winning a Super Bowl, too...

Then compare Mannings stats from 1998-2004 and Bradys from 2001-2007 both their first 7 years in the league and tell me what you come up with MR.EXPERT...Manning 112 games and Brady 110 games

2004 Manning's record year his 7th year

2007 Brady's record year his 7th year

Their quarterback rating are amost identical of 92.9 in those 7 years..

Take away division passing stats of each and take their passing yardage with the rest of their opponents in those seven years and it is almost identical..Even with Manning throwing more passes in those 7 years!!!!!!!!!!and with a EXPANSION TEAM from 2002-2004

And their TDS thrown are almost identical considering Manning threw more passes and had better receivers during those 7 years..

So you just keep living in your own little hero worshipping Manning world!!!!!!

One thing we do know for sure is that we all know what Brady had done in 6 years from 2001-2006 and that is 3 Super bowls before Moss,Welker,Stallworth, etc came..

And we all know what Manning did in 9 years from 1998-2006 with 1 Super Bowl with Harrison,Wayne,Stokley, etc.as receivers..

The question is what would have Manning done without those great receivers?????????????

PATRIOT12....while you are busy hitting homers for Brady!! You never mention the NUMBER ONE REASON the patriots win!!!IT'S BECAUSE OF THERE DEFENSE!! that is also a reason MANNING only has one SB ring!! HE'S NEVER HAD A GOOD DEFENSE BESIDES THIS YEAR!!COME TO THINK ABOUT IT!!THE COLTS HAVE PROBABLY HAD THE WORST DEFENSE YEAR IN YEAR OUT SINCE 2000!! MANNING HAS NEVER HAD THE LUXURY OF FALLING BACK ON HIS DEFENSE IF HE FAILS!! BRADY HAS!! REMEMBER VIANTIERI KICKED THOSE FIELD GOALS!!NOT BRADY!!TY LAW INTERCEPTED THOSE PASSES IN THE AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME!! NOT BRADY!!.......HARRISON INTERCEPTED MCNABB IN THE SUPERBOWL NOT BRADY!! AND I THINK THE QUESTION IS WOULD THE PATRIOTS BE 16-0 WITHOUT MOSS???MOSS IS THE MOST TALENTED RECEIVER OF ALL TIME!! ALL BRADY DOES IS THROW IT UP AND MOSS CATCHES IT!!MOST OF THE TIME FOR TD'S!!ALSO, MANNING CHOOSES TO COME OF THE FIELD WHEN HIS TEAM HAS A COMFORTABLE LEAD...BUT NOT BRADY AND THE PATRIOTS!!THEY MUST HUMILIATE THE OPPOSING TEAM BY STILL THROWING DEEP WHEN UP BY OVER 20 POINTS!! MANNING HAS NEVER HAD A PURE SPEED THREAT LIKE MOSS!!HARRISON IS GREAT, BUT HE IS NO MOSS!!!

AND 4 RINGS LOOKS PRETTY GOOD RIGHT NOW THEY ARE GONNA DESTROY THE JAGS. jags have good runners but they are planning to put 1v1 coverage on moss (witch we all no is not gonna work AT ALL. and pats have the 10th best run D. and 1st best offence. i bet the jags will never be ahead in the game at all its gonna be 45-14 pats

i think the JAGS can win!!shutting down Moss is only one factor!u need to apply constant pressure on Brady which so far no team has done to this point!!and also teams tend to sit back when they have the lead against the PATRIOTS which is something you cant do!!

No Moss was not losing his talent.....RANDY "I'LL PLAY WHEN I WANNA PLAY" MOSS WAS SICK OF RAIDERS LOSING SO HE SIMPLY DID NOT GIVE HIS BEST!!DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS!!u can have a half rate quarterback and still win!!LOOK AT 2000 RAVENS!! TRENT DILFER and TONY BANKS ring any bells??

If MANNING did the same as BRADY and stayed on the whole game instead of coming out...i think manning could have thrown for 55 td's that season!!
