We always get a weekend review, so I thought why not a preview. That way maybe some of us aren't kicking ourselves for missing that big game or exciting moment. I know most of us are well informed sports fans and know the biggest games or events before they happen, but even the most attentive fans miss one here or there. Also, I'm not going to necessarily always focus on the biggest games, series, stories, or events. Occassionally I want to throw in the interesting, unusual, or just plain weird. This is pretty basic to start this week, but once football gets into full swing it will get more interesting.
MLB
New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox - I'm guessing there will be a split Friday setting up some big showdowns on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday we get to see Randy Johnson take on Josh Beckett (who have almost identical stats...here) and Sunday is the marguee matchup of Mike Mussina and Curt Schilling. Whether you like the attention these teams get or not, you're a fan or not, or if you can stand each teams fans or not, if you're a baseball fan you'll be watching and enjoying what should be an exciting weekend.
Chicago White Sox vs. Minnesota Twins - The other big AL matchup of the weekend has major Wild Card implications. A sweep by either could cripple one teams psyche and/or playoff hopes. If you can, catch Sunday's game. It's the third and final game of the series and Cy Young candidate Johan Santana will take the hill against Javier Vazquez.
NL - Pretty much every game matters because there are still 9 (yes 9!) teams within 6.5 games of the Wild Card leading Reds. Too bad only two are at .500 or better.
Golf
PGA Championship - Everyone knows that Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are paired together for Thursday and Friday, but I'm interested to see if they are still playing together on Saturday and Sunday. I think during Friday's round one will rise to play near the top of the leader board for the weekend and one will fall out of contention, and everyone knows fat, left-handed guys fall faster . Also, it'll be interesting to see how Geoff Ogilvy, the forgotten third member of Tiger and Phil's group, will respond to playing with golf's two biggest stars.
NFL
Preseason Football - Yeah, it doesn't matter, but it's still football. Hey, atleast it's a way to grab a couple glimpses of your potential fantasy football top picks and sleepers. Catch LT and his new QB Philip Rivers Friday night on CBS at 8:00 pm (EST) and two of the biggest fantasy studs around (Shaun Alexander and Peyton Manning) on NBC Sunday night when Seattle takes on Indianapolis.
