ArmchairGM Hall of Fame - My Ideas

12
Vote

by user Drpatriot

As many members can remember, the idea of the ArmchairGM Hall of Fame has already been started; mainly here. I think that this was a great idea, and I'd like to get it moving. To do this, I'd like to present my ideas for a formal induction process. My process would move in two stages.

Stage 1

This first stage would not require a large amount of people as a voting base, which is why I think that it could be done immediately. Stage 1 works in poll format (similar to the ArmchairGM User Top 25 College Football Poll). Each position in every sport would have its own individual poll. Users would vote on which players were the top 5 players at their position of all time. These players would have to be retired (debate as to whether current players would be allowed to enter would take place during the second stage). After a designated amount of time, the polls would close and the players finishing in the top 8 or 10 in votes would be inducted into the ArmchairGM Hall of Fame.

Stage 2

Once the preliminary voting has ended, remaining players (retired or not - this can be decided later) that are not in the Hall of Fame would have a voting tab in their player profile, similar to the voting tab on top of an opinion page. If a player receives a required number of votes (based on the # of users of ArmchairGM), he or she is inducted into the ArmchairGM Hall of Fame. Players would not be removed from the Hall of Fame if they no longer had the required number of votes due to the growth of ArmchairGM; when a player enters the Hall of Fame, they stay there.

Concerns

My first concern is agreement; I think I have a reasonably good system set up here, but if people disagree with me than we will need to work something else out.

My second concern is participation; not in participating in the polls, but actually administering the entire idea. If a user is interested in helping administer the Stage 1 polls, enter your name and the section you are interested in helping with in the space below:

Drpatriot: NFL
Rizzo42789:NFL
Demonboy:MLB
Davis21wylie:NBA

My third concern is my considerable lack of wiki-savvy. Stage 1 would be easy to do, but Stage 2 would likely take some work once we decide on a specific process. Ideally, this process would be self-automating, but I'm not even sure if that's doable. Anyone with suggestions, advice or a desire to help with doing this would be appreciated.

What I would be looking for is to have someone manage the polls, etc. for the MLB teams; i.e. simply set up the pages, tally the polls after a certain time, just basically manage that section. I'll put up the NFL pages first as a template.

That seems like nothing but it is really a lot of work to do.

Why not just make ONE Armchair HoF and include all sports and sports contributors... HOWEVER limit the entrants to TOP NOTCH out-of-this-world people who clearly have O!F, etc. Maybe set a limit of 50 or 100. Everytime another comes in, you kick the least worthy out! None of this "you're in for life crap". Anyone who's worthiness could be logically debated over would NOT be allowed in...

I like the idea of a combined HOF. I don't know about the limit of 50 or 100. Maybe having a nomination process and having a certain number (15 to 25) supporting votes (in the form of signed in and registered comments) to elect a person into it.

I like the combined idea. However, I think initial voting should be kept separate so that we don't have a disorganized free-for-all as the foundation of the HOF.

Agreed, criterion also need set for admittance (i.e. Pete Rose, Joe Jackson, etc). I also like the idea of an All Sport Hall of Fame, not to be confused with a Gatorade or Powerade Hall of Fame.

We wouldn't necessarily have to set criteria for entry in the case of Rose and Jackson, if they are nominated and they get enough votes they're in, if they don't get the votes they're not in.

The criteria that would need to be set is things like -out of their sport x years, -played in the sport x years, etc.

How 'bout the criteria is 'they were GREAT'. Meaning BETTER than VERY good...

Had to be one of the following a)top 3 MVP candidate at least 6 times, b)led your league in significant stats 6 times, c)No debates over worthiness

Let's make it a truly Exclusive Club! NO clear-cut cheaters, NO second-tier criminals (one or two light infractions are ok), NO shady characters...

Considering that eliminates pretty much every pro athlete ever in one way or another, that is a pretty exclusive club.

I agree with Manny on his point, though not to the extreme that he believes in. Players need to do really, really well in their career to make the HOF. No major crimes (there goes O.J Simpson, Ray Lewis), no steroids (Barry Bonds, Mark McGuire). This HOF needs to be for great players who not only represent the way the game should be played, but also represent how players should act off the field.

Last I checked, Simpson and Lewis were acquitted of their "major crimes". So your saying that if you are accused of something you are autimatically out?

You raise a good point. I personally don't believe that anyone accused of such crimes should be in the Hall of Fame; even though they were acquitted, their slate is definitely not clean. Despite their acquittals, they still deserve some suspicion. I would agree with you for crimes like drug abuse or a drawn gun in a bar, but must disagree when the issue is something as serious as murder.

I think the best players on the field ever, no matter what their circumstances, should get into the Hall. I would vote for Barry.

I still do not understand Drpatriot. You don't think that anyone accused of big crimes like murder should be in the Hall even if they are acquitted, but people who are acquitted on lesser charges are fine? Where is your logic?

Schools will not hire a teacher if they have been accused of sexual harrassment, for example, even if they were acquitted. However, they will allow a teacher who has been arrested for DUI to teach if they can show they have recovered. My philosophy with the Hall of Fame is similar; clearly we differ in opinions and can express as such in the way that we vote for players in the HoF polls.

Correct me if I'm wrong here... but wasn't there a baseball player back in the 40's or 50's that was murderer and a racist? I think it was either Stan Musial Ty Cobb but not sure... if it was... what about someone like that? Great player... but very questionable morality wise.... or even a player like Babe Ruth - he was a womanizing drunk off the field... would he be eligible even though some of his morals were very questionable...

That's a good question, Demonboy. At this point, I really don't think that it's eligibility but a personal choice for voting - there would unquestionably be people who wouldn't like it if we couldn't include O.J., Ray Lewis, etc at least as eligible for the Hall of Fame. I probably wouldn't vote for the first guy that you mentioned - no matter how good he was. However, you can't deny Babe Ruth, one of the greatest players to play any sport, especially if he wasn't ever arrested or anything (which I don't believe he was). In the same way, I'm not going to deny Lawrence Taylor a spot in the hall; one of the game's greatest players, but had problems off the field. For me, this is the exception - not the rule. On the other hand, some voters don't give a crap. If the player eventually gets enough votes, he will make it...that's how it will probably be. If ArmchairGM on the whole decides not to vote in scumbags, then I say good for us. If they decide scumbags are okay, well then I'll have to deal with the loss.

I would like to propose a middle ground to Manny's suggestion that only the very, very best players should be in the Hall of Fame. I think a good compromise would be to have an open Hall of Fame, but a small, very limited "Circle of Honor" for only the very best athletes in each sport.

I'm still all for the tiered system. Perhaps with the voting system you could have x number of votes to just get in and then you can move up to the different levels of greatness depending on the total amount of votes you get. That way the shady or debatable people may get in, but never rise to the"Circle of Honor" appeasing both the people for said player and those against.
