Angels Send Jeff Weaver to the Cardinals

The Los Angeles Angels shipped SP Jeff Weaver to the St. Louis Cardinals for minor-league OF Terry Evans. The Angels designated Weaver for assignment last friday, after he went 6-10 with a 6.29 EA this season. Weaver, who was with the Angels in the offseason for a one-year 8.3 million contract, was replaced in the rotation by his younger brother Jered Weaver.

The Angels will assume Weaver's contact, but St. Louis will pay an undisclosed amount to the Angels. Weaver has played for three other teams, the Detroit Tigers, New York Yankees, and Los Angeles Dodgers and has a career record of 81-97 with an ERA of 4.55 in 225 starts.

Why not take a flyer on Weaver if the Angels are picking up the tab? Not a surprising move as the Orioles are still paying Ponson millions to pitch for the Red Birds as well. Weaver will be much more effective in the National League.

If the cardinals traded what looks like a B prospect for a guy who could be good...playing in new busch btw, then they made a good move, especially if they don't have to pay much of his salary (if any?). But, they also got a potentially solid #3 pitcher...this move is risky but makes sense...
