Andy Van Slyke (Andrew James Van Slyke) was born on December 21, 1960 in Utica, New York. He made his Major League debut on June 17, 1983 for the St. Louis Cardinals. In 1983, his rookie year, he hit .262 with 8 home runs and 38 RBI. Van Slyke played for the St. Louis Cardinals, Pittsburgh Pirates, Philadelphia Phillies and Baltimore Orioles over the course of his 13 year career.

Named the Tigers first base, outfield and baserunning coach on October 11, 2005...marks his first professional coaching assignment. Served in various capacities in the media following his retirement as a player, including a stint on Fox Sport Net's Best Damn Sports Show Period and occasional work as an analyst on St. Louis Cardinals broadcasts.

A first-round selection by the St. Louis Cardinals in the June 1979 draft, he played 13 seasons at the major league level with the Cardinals (1983-86), Pittsburgh Pirates (1987-94), Baltimore Orioles (1995) and Philadelphia Phillies (1995).

A three-time all-star selection during his playing days (1988, 1992, 1993), he won five Rawlings Gold Glove Awards in the outfield (1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992) and two Silver Slugger Awards as a top offensive outfielder (1988, 1992). Only Roberto Clemente (12) and Bill Mazeroski (8) won more Rawlings Gold Gloves in Pirates history than Van Slyke. Finished fourth in the National League Most Valuable Player voting in both 1988 and 1992.

Was a member of four division-winning clubs during his playing career: St. Louis in 1985 and Pittsburgh for three straight seasons 1990-92...saw action in the 1985 World Series with the Cardinals.

A graduate of New Hartford High School in New York, he starred in baseball, basketball and football...earned All- American honors in baseball as a senior...He and his wife Lauri reside in St. Louis, MO during the off-season...the couple has three children A.J. (11/19/83), Scott (7/24/86) and Jared (1/6/89) -- A.J. signed with St. Louis after being the club's selection in the 23rd round of the June 2005 draft, while Scott signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers after being the club's selection in the 14th round of the June 2005 draft.
