Anderson Varejao is not worth 11 wins

Just for the record, Bill Simmons predicted that the Cavs to win fewer than 40 games and LeBron will request a trade.

Needless to say, I disagree.

Look, I can understand why people are down on the Cavs (well, almost, Barkley predicted they won't make the playoffs as well). I get it. They're a flawed team whose roster hasn't changed in basically two seasons. Anderson Varejao is holding out ( Pavlovic just inked a reasonable deal). The East has improved (but, honestly, by that much?). I get the negativity. I have some of it as well.

But the Cavs are the 9th best team in the conference? Really? I mean, I can't honestly think that Simmons actually believes this (I honestly think he's just tweaking Cleveland fans). Worse than Indiana? Worse than Atlanta? Why would they slip behind New Jersey? Or Detroit?

Do people really think that Anderson Varejao means that much? Hustle points and flops are an 11 win difference?

Personally, I think the Cavs will match their win total of the last two seasons. 50 games. Two years ago they overachieved to reach 50, while last year they kind of underachieved. This year, I think they'll 'achieve' and get 50.

Sure, they're gonna have a brutal start (a West coast trip right out of the gate) and they'll miss Varejao. But for the first half of last season, LeBron played with a back court of Snow and Hughes. This year he's upgrading his PG from 'terrible' to 'lights out'. You think that won't help with some double teams?

Finally there's this :

> At age 22 and entering his fifth NBA season, James has never been in better shape or worked harder on his game at this stage of the season. In theory, this is good news for the Cavs: A motivated superstar is perhaps the grandest weapon in the modern NBA.

and this :

> LeBron didn’t shoot much but he passed well and, most interestingly, Mike Brown ran a bunch of post up plays for him and he worked down there well. He may very well have the best season of his career if he keeps this up.

Plus there were those reports that LeBron's been working on his jumper.

So you're telling me that the Eastern Conference Champion is returning everyone but their backup power forward, they're replacing Eric Snow's jumper with Daniel Gibson's and LeBron James is not only in the best shape of his career, but he's sporting an improved jumper AND he's working well in the post... they're going to get worse?

Don't get me wrong, I expect this team to struggle at times. I have no faith in Mike Brown's offense. I hate Larry Hughes with a passion. I wish they'd use the post more often (meaning, sometimes).

However, despite what you saw in the San Antonio series, the Cavs aren't terrible. They have issues, but they aren't awful. They may struggle at first (and I expect them to) but they'll be fine.

The Cavs will finish third in the Central and will be in the bottom half of the East playoffs.

It's not that having Anderson Varejao means that muchs to this team, but NOT having him, NOT having a replacement for him and making NO significant (or insignificant for that matter) acquisitions will kill the Cavs' season.

How could a team with a young superstar not make an effort to reach the next level (or at least re-sign its own free agents in a timely manner!) after getting to the Finals for the first time in franchise history? It just screams "Low-end Franchise"!

The Cavs are not as good as advertised. Zeke is yet another year older and more brittle. Varejao is an inside help and he will be missed. More importantly its not what the Cavs did to get worse, its what the rest of the East did to improve. Boston made the obvious changes. The Wizards have a chance to be healthy and make a run. Orlando improved with the addition of Lewis. Detroit is still a legit team. Chicago may be the best young team in the league. The Cavs just made no efforts to improve all they did was lose players. So to answer your statment, no Varejao is not worth 11 wins, but he cant hurt.

People seem to discredit the trade deadline where the Cavs can easily make a great trade and be able to make a playooff push...i think Lebron is the MVP this year that taste of the finals really was the inspiration he needed

I disagree. With an aging Ilgauskas, no Anderson Varejao and the tradeable assets on the Cavs' current roster, how are they ANY better than the Lakers?

lebron james is one of, if not the best, player in the nba problem is, larry hughes, daniel gibson, big z, drew gooden, and pavlovic is not a championship supporting cast i think that the cavs will make the playoffs at a 5-6-7 seed, fighting for a spot behind chicago, boston, detroit, toronto and washington

Why would they be worse than Washington? Or Detroit? I can see picking Toronto, Chicago and Boston ahead of them (not that I agree with all those teams), but why in the world should they be looking up at the Wizards and the Pistons (or Orlando. Really? The Magic?)?

The Cavs are bringing back the team that won the East, minus Varejao (who could actually be back this season by the way). They play defense, LeBron's improved his jumper and playing in the post and Daniel Gibson is starting from the get go.

Does the team have flaws? Of course (tons of dead weight in Hughes, Marshall, Jones, Snow and to a certain extent, Z). But to go from winning the conference to being a low playoff seed (where they're only loss is their backup power forward)... I just don't see it.

(side note: what should have Ferry done? Trade for a now injury prone Mike Bibby? Signed Varejao to a $10 million a year deal? The last thing they needed to do was get into worse cap shape. Standing pat was really their only choice. The team needs to make moves, but they don't need to make dumb ones.)

Don't get me started on Varejao. Sideshow Bob flopping all over the place is not who I want to make or break me. The eastern conference let one slip by letting them get to the finals. I think the Cavs WAY overachieved last year by making that run, and the NBA got what it wanted (Lebron in the finals) but not the fanfare. No mas!

The bottom line is that this franchise is cheap. Lebron is the best young player in the game right now, but he needs a reliable second and third option and it does not exist on this team. If Lebron can take last year's supporting cast to the Finals, imagine what he'll do with real options. Certainly Varejao is not deserving of 10 million, but Danny Ferry and the front office sitting on their hands certainly isn't either. On a side note, This is why I get pissed at such unbeliveably insane deals that the Knicks make giving Jerome James and Jared Jeffries 30 million dollars!! Eventually it's gonna create a domino effect as other sleezeball agents will take a look at those players, compare them to their own clients and say "What gives" The Cavs will NOT make it back to the Eastern Conference finals. They're putting entirely too much on Lebron and it isn't fair because you know good hell and well he'll be the first one to catch crap when they fall short.

I don't know if they're cheap, I'd say they're more pragmatic. Paying Varejao 8-10 million is a panic move and they can't afford it. They traded long term flexibility for a short term fix when they signed Hughes and traded for Eric Snow. Now they're stuck with those guys. If there is ever a year to take their lumps, this is it, as LeBron's extension just kicked in.

The Cavs suck, i do think they will easily make the playoff's but only cause of the weak east conference. I predict 4-6 place finish in the east. The Lakers are better than the Cav's and they wont even make the playoff's.
