American Men's Tennis Did Something Cool

(Pleats note: I know this isn't about the Big 3, but just go with me for a moment)

Newsflash: The United States men won the Davis Cup for the first time in 12 years.

What? You didn't hear about that?

Well, take heart, because I am ashamed to admit I didn't either until someone told me. (Ashamed because people think I'm supposed to know this stuff). I didn't even watch a single point of the entire Davis Cup. They beat Russia, by the way. And the Davis Cup, is an international team tennis event akin to the World Cup in soccer, an event that the American men have won 32 times since 1900.

And no one even knows it took place. Why? Because, as much as I hate to admit this, American men's tennis is just not relevant.

Unfortunately, I think American men's tennis would be more popular if there wasn't this guy named Roger Federer around. I've had enough of seeing Andy Roddick and James Blake make it to the semis and finals of a tournament just to see them ultimately lose to Federer or someone else - but mainly Fed.

If they didn't get dealt with so handily, then perhaps it might be sort of interesting to watch them play. It's not really fun when you know someone is not going to win. I've seen Roddick play (and lose very badly) to Federer enough times to know that this guy just has his number, maybe for life. Once he or Blake, or some other American breaks through against Fed for the first time, or Fed retires then maybe people will start watching again. Even then, I see another hungry Fed-like player right behind him.

Add that to tennis just not being anywhere close to football (or even basketball, for that matter) in the realm of interesting sporting events going on in December. It really hasn't seen a serious fan base in this country since even before Sampras and Agassi came on the scene.

And, I have seen the new crop of players coming up and the sad part is that there are just not as many kids playing anymore. It's just not as popular.

People will watch a Federer match at least once just to see what the hype is about. I'd put money on the fact that fewer Americans have seen Roddick and Blake combined play than have watched a Federer match.

Because the American men are not winning, they haven't really drawn people in or received the endorsements. Because Blake may be a nice-looking guy, but you have to have some on-court results to get Anna Kournikova publicity if you're a man.

Will this Davis Cup win do more for their popularity here? Maybe. But if you didn't know that they'd even won the Davis Cup before you read this post, then I think we have our answer right here.

Stay tuned tomorrow when I will give my theories on why the American men's tennis is not as good as it could be, and my 10 suggestions for making it better . . .

I don't think I've ever really seen a tennis match. Maybe Sampras vs Agassi years ago, but nothing really beyond that.

I used to love watching tennis when I was younger, Bjorn Borg was my favorite.

I think this is great. In Britain, we would love to win the Davis Cup. When we had Tim and Greg a decade ago, we thought we'd have a chance of winning it.

Davis Cup went through a bad time a few years ago. Players were skipping it because their singles career was so important. USA in particular. So, they picked two young guys in Roddick and Blake, and they've remained ever since. Also, all the top players play Davis Cup now - Nadal plays for Spain, Federer wins ties single-handedly for Switzerland.

I love Davis Cup, and I wish we had a chance of winning it. Maybe with another Murray-esque player, we'd actually win a World Group match for the first time in 15 years!

And USA can always call on their specialist doubles pair of Bryan and Bryan to win the doubles match.

And I love the format of the ties. Everybody knows what is happening and when, and there is so much tradition in it. It's the perfect country v country format. It's always louder at the Davis Cup, and it's the only time that Doubles really gets a show anymore on TV. I love the Davis Cup. Well done to the USA.

"I'd put money on the fact that less Americans have seen Roddick and Blake combined play than have watched a Federer match." I'd put money on the fact that you should have said fewer Americans... :P Sorry to nitpick, but that particular mistake annoys me!

Just learning that it was a "mistake" to begin with - it's been a while since I was in school, but I don't recall that one. Good to know.

If it's countable then use "fewer". Unless you can "spend" it, i.e. time/money. In which case, it's "less." So you'd have fewer Americans, but less money. Also, if it's not countable, then you use "less".

I watched the clinching match and it was great to see. Roddick, Blake, and the Bryans did a great job this year. I think the Bryans are key to our success: since they're an everyday doubles team, they are very hard to beat (I think they've only lost once). Thus we just need to half the singles to win.

I enjoy both watching and playing tennis. I don't think the fact that people don't watch the Davis Cup is an indictment of Men's tennis. I think it is an indictment of the Davis Cup. American Tennis fans watch the Grand Slam events so there is a viewership for tennis. The Davis Cup is not advertised or televised enough to obtain a viewership.

I don't think people watch men's tennis, regardless of where it's played. Davis Cup is a great event, I just don't think this win is going to make a blip on the radar as far as American fans go.

This is going to be controversial, but US sports fans tend to be ignorant of anything outside the Big 4... Or Big 3 now, as you put at the top of the article. It's common over here too, in that everybody is football football football football football. That said, if our teams do well, they tend to bandwagon really easily. That said again, if we won Davis Cup, it would make less of an impact (N.B. "less"!) than if Andy Murray won Wimbledon.

I am American and as far as I am concerned the "Big 3" are:
  1. Football (Soccer)
  2. Hockey
  3. Formula 1 Racing
But that's just me.

Particularly on this site, it might even be the Big 2 since the NBA gets little love. Hockey is a red-headed stepchild (no offense to any Annies in the crowd). That's funny, Gunny!

American's call Soccer "soccer", not football. An American wouldn't call Football, American Football, because it is just football.
