America’s Champion

by user Bobbyjim45

In the only sport which we can truly claim to be 100% American, it is a tiny little Japanese man who claims the throne. Takeru Kobayashi has become the Jordan of professional eating; mainly the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. Yes, hot dog eating is our main claim to fame as an American public. It doesn’t hurt that bad when we lose a soccer match on the world stage, but to lose at this, Americans everywhere are feeling the sting. And really, we didn’t just lose; we got obliterated… 6 years in a row.

We, the American people, the people who on average each consume 70 hot dogs a year, can’t beat out a scrawny, 160 pound Japanese guy in our own game. A game that was designed for guys like Eric “Badlands” Booker (a 425 pound subway conductor) has put Americans to shame. Kobayashi, who set a world record by eating 54 dogs, is America’s champion in America’s game, but it’s not quite right.

This year, dazzling rookie Joey Chestnut took a run at Kobayashi, downing 52 wieners in the allotted 12 minutes, just two shy of slaying the Japanese dragon. Just two shy of restoring American pride and inspiring young hot dog eaters everywhere to dip their buns in water before eating them.

But, unfortunately, it didn’t happen. So, now we’ll all go back to our average American lives, eating McDonald’s, pizza, and ice cream and getting the closest parking spot possible when we go to Wal-Mart so we don’t have to get any exercise on the way in. We will wait until next Fourth of July when another “Joey Chestnut” comes along to take back the contest that is rightfully ours. Only this time, we will not lose. We will reclaim the Mustard Belt, because this is our game and we’re playing it everyday.

Now if you’ll excuse me, my wieners are boiling…

Joey Chestnut and Badlands Booker. Now those are some epic hardass names. Too bad they can't back it up apparently.

Chestnut is apparently the first American to down 50 or more dogs, and his 52 would have won the prize last year. I just think Kobayashi is a freak of nature.

You might want to change the word "wiener". It's English slang for somewhere on a man's body... (Making the last line of your article painful/funny depending on how you look at it) "Hot dog(s)" might be better.

Wouldn't that make him less likely to win? If you eat fifty hot dogs in 12 minutes, after a few years (even if you don't do it again for 12 months) it must get harder to continue eating like that.

Amazingly, these guys seem to be getting better over the years. The record just a few years ago was in the 20's. Now it's up into the mid 50's. However, the record hasn't moved up much at all in the past couple years.

I can't believe I actually know this much about competitive hotdog eating.

Actually, I have competed in several eating contests (I am reigning Pumpkin Pie Champ at my work - this is not something I am proud of, but it was free food...)

Solomon Method is when they separate dog from bun, rip both in half and shove 'em down. Eat twice as much with every bite, it's effective and saves energy for the finish. I normally watch it, but this year was the first I missed in about 5 years...

Being from the Philly Area originally, I know the boys at WIP handle Wingbowl all by themselves, I have competed in knockoff wingbowls...

Chesnutt is the real deal and first REAL competition he's ever had.

I think boxing is definitely more dangerous short term because you don't see competitive eaters dying during the contest. In the long run, they are both very harmful. Boxing kills the brain and this is just bad for the body in every way possible.

There's actually a mathematical theory that agrees with you... it's called chaos theory", or the butterfly effect. It starts with, "if a butterfly flaps it's wings, could it start a hurricane?" In theory, mathematicians have said that it could - and deduce that anything can cause anything. Therefore, it is theoretically possible that your last comment could be true. Me typing this in response could cause a power failure across Europe. Ok, chances are slim, but in theory...
