All Manager Tantrums Pale in Comparison to Earl Weaver

9
Vote

by user Tyrone Briggs

Long time Atlanta Braves skipper  Bobby Cox may be close to becoming the new all-time leader for MLB managers being tossed from baseball games but  Baltimore Orioles' Earl Weaver was the absolute best and most entertaining when arguing with an umpire.

This video footage should be archived in the Hall of Fame  as it represents a bygone era of when political correctness was non-existant and a manager and umpire could let the profanity and insults fly during a heated argument despite an ever present microphone.

Enjoy!

I loved Earl. He is probably second All-Time only to John McGraw. Too bad there's no video of McGraw's tirades. Tyrone Biggums, "you're only here to f%ck us" - Earl Weaver is the TRUE King of Trolls.

Old timey baseball (pre-'94) warms the soul...

I like the stories of him and Jim Palmer squabbling, too. "I won't fight you if you won't stand up, Earl... Oooh.. you ARE standing"

It's crazy how politically correct the world has become. "You're going to the Hall of Fame for blowing a World Series" - "I won more than I lost" - "No you haven't, Earl"... "well it's the same"

That Earl and Ron Luciano has some GREAT battles over the span of two plus decades.

props to Eddie Murray for waiting through all of that to finish his original point!

Well, I can't be Weaver, I'm too tall! I think we could pull off a pretty decent What's Happening with you as Roger and Jamel as Dwayne cause I gots me some Re-Run moves... Woo! We could go bootleg a Doobie Brothers concert... (wait, I can do that for REAL at the Indian Casino next week!) Look at what happened to the Orioles since Weaver died... Baltimore is too good of a sports town to be dealt that crap.

Kombol & Briggs... Bad Country Act? A Vineyard & Winery that also brews Malt Liquor? A Racing Stable with a beastiality issue? Sitcom about two lady cops about to jump a shark? No, just two egotistical pricks with Enter buttons that function too well.

EW: You @#*%, I'm going to go in and check the rule book!

Umpire: You *&^@$, I've got one right here you can read

EW: Won't help me, I can't read braille

Umpire: You're @*%# gone!

I love Weaver yarns and anecdotes... Ron Luciano wrote a book when he was retiring and Weaver was needling him over some inaccuracies, Luciano pleaded "poetic license"

So Weaver "like it says in Hamlet, Ron: To thine own self be true"

A columist Edwin Pope took the quote and ran it in the next day's story. The editor "beefed up" the quote by saying "like Horatio said in Hamlet..."

next time Weaver saw Pope he came running and screaming at him "Edwin, if Polonius didn't f%%#ing say it, I've lived the last 35 years of my life backwards!!!"

As long as we're talking Napoleonic Managers, is there any Billy Martin fights dangling around the web?

Sweet... My buddies Dad (an Italian guy who also coached me in Little League) grew up with Tommy and Mike Piazza's Dad. Great stories. My college coach was totally different - he only ever said two phrases -"What the shit" and "Fuck me". In three years I don't think he said more than 25 other words. He called me "Fuck me" like it was my name when I walked two straight batters once in an intersquad game.

There's a story in "Ball Four" about Pilot's manager Joe Schultz arguing a call, and he's yelling, kicking dirt, red-faced veins popping out, and when he gets back to the dugout someone asked him why he was arguing so long, and Schultz replied they were trying to decide where to go to dinner after the game.
