All-Time strikeout record safe from Rocket

7
Vote

Roger Clemens today announced that he would return to baseball this year and pitch for the Houston Astros. He'll complete a 3 game minor league stint and could be pitching for the Astros by June 22.

When he does start this season, he'll begin with 4502 strikeouts which is 1212 strikeouts behind Nolan Ryan on the all time list. Over the last three years, Roger Clemens has averaged .93 strikeouts per inning pitched. At that rate, if Clemens get 20 starts this year, he could amass around 138 strikeouts. Using that rate and expecting Clemens to start each year in late June, he should pass Ryan for the all time lead in strikeouts in a little under 9 years, on Clemens' 53rd birthday.

While the Rocket's return could spark the Astros' run in the N.L. Central as well as spark interest in baseball, don't expect Nolan Ryan to plan a trip to Minute Maid Park anytime soon to pass the all time strikeout torch to Clemens.

The strikeout record isn't unbeatable....but it's pretty close. i'm willing to bet we'll never see anyone pass Ryan.

The maths - over a 20 year career, 4,502/20=251 per year. Say they start 162/5=roughly 32. 250/30=8 1/3, so in a nine inning game, unless you pitch 8.1 innings each game or more (unlikely), you need more than a strikeout an inning. If the almighty Clemens has averaged less than one per inning, I find it hard to believe that others will be able to do it for a twenty year period.

No doubt it would take a tremendous and healthy talent to make a run at the record, but it's not unbreakable. If Randy Johnson had a better start to his career, he would have had a shot at it.

In fact Randy Johnson's K's per 162 games avg. (286) is higher then that of Nolan Ryan (245).

Roger Clemens announced his return 53 games into the season. The first offense steroid suspension is 50 games. Any connection you think?

I think it is unbeatable, personally. Nobody these days pitching that well, for that long. Nolan Ryan wasn't always the best, but how many pitchers can be expected to pitch until they're 45 or 46? With how great Clemens has been, and with how long he's been so great, for him to still be so far away from this record should really put into perspective just how untouchable it is.

If Nolan Ryan was in his prime today, he would easily have SEVERAL 400 plus strikeout seasons. I may be mistaken, but I thought the 70's was the toughest decade in which to strike hitters out in the modern era. It should never be about 'Is Ryan great or not?' What blew my mind when I saw him pitch with the Angels was how SCARED everyone was!!
