All-Penguins Team Roster

Every team has their all-time best lineup. This batch is often comprised of players active in a certain decade or throughout the history of a franchise. Seeing as how the Penguins don't have a game until Friday night against the Stars, now might be a good time to consider and discuss an all-time best roster.

Here are the rules: Any player who has ever worn a Penguins uniform is eligible. Wingers are interchangeable.

8 Wingers
4 Centers
8 D-Men
3 Goalies
3 Coaches
2 "Scratches" (Any position)

This is open to suggestions as well. But, allow me to get the obvious out of the way. Unfortunately this won't leave much else open in the center category, but the Pens can't help that now can they? I don't think they'll be much argument with what is here so far.

Edit the page and just toss your name next to the players nominated. Feel free to go over the limit and we'll narrow down from there.

How good does the player have to be when they played for the Penguins? For example, Gary Roberts was a terrific player, but by the time he got to the Penguins, he was on his last legs. Do I combine his all-star career with his 1.5 years in Pitt or did the player have to achieve while in Pittsburgh?

Shootin for the guys who played their best when in the black and gold. Memorable Penguins for being Penguins. BTW - how was your holiday travel?

Travel was fine. I was shocked at how easy it was.

Here are some names from my youth that are deserving of consideration:

Moe Matha; Doug Bodger; Dave Hanna; Bob Errey; Craig Simpson; Zarley Zalapski; John Cullen; Kevin Stevensl Marh Recchi; Joe Mullen

Of this list I'd have to say Kevin Stevens and Zarley Zalapski have to make it.

Good pick on Kasper. He totally slipped my mind.

I kind of left a few slots open on purpose, and I'm glad you tossed badger in on coaches. Carlyle is also a good pick - only Pen to win the Norris.

Nice work.

Defense - Duane Rupp. He got a bad rep in pittsburgh cause he was a large man but didn't like to fight often. He was the first Pens defenseman to score a hat trick and also beat the shit out of Bobby Orr once. Also a great man on and off the ice.

Good touch. I was hoping you guys would be able to dig deep and find stuff like that.

Ah, nice touch MJD with Mullen and Stevens. What do you guys think of adding Tocchet? Legal stuff aside, he did score 109 points in 92/93.

I thought about it, but I am not going to remember Rick Tochett as a Penguin. He had 2 bad seasons and one great one. I'd take Mullen and Recchi over Tocchet. Stevens has the same problem. He was great, but also a drug addict.

Yeah I tend to think the combination of his bad seasons easily outweigh his single good one.

Maybe even Patrick Lalime as a goalie? He also had that 15 or 16 game streak without a loss. 14-0-2 according to some online sources. NHL Record for longest unbeaten streak to begin a career. I don't know...discuss.

I'd take Petierangelo over Lalime. Peterangelo pretty much got the Pens to the Cup the first year, he kinda got jived when they picked up Barasso.

As far as the goalie discussion I would take Ken Wregget over Lalime. And I also liked Greg Millen.

Lalime and Pieterangelo and pretty much backup goalies. Wendell Young was as good as those guys. Ken Wregget; JS Aubin? Pittsburgh has not had many good goales. Maybe your all-time team should trade one of its extra forwards, say 1991 Mark Recchi, who may not even make the team, for Andy Moog.

Haha oh no. Then we get in to All-time mockery trades and that's a whole other world. Of course, for the off-season...

I agree though, Pittsburgh has never really been known for their goalies. Similar to how my Jets have never been known for their quarterbacks. Or wise 1st round picks. Or even winning for that matter.

Funny story about Wregget. I bumped into him at RPM's in Bridgeville one night. It was around Christmas. I recognized him as a penguin, but I couldn't place the name for the longest time. Once I remembered his name went up to him and said hi. Apparently one of his good friends had died that day and he needed someone to talk to. We spent the whole night remeniscing about the 90's Pens. It was by far one of the best sports conversations I have ever had.

Oh man, that's pretty cool. I practically walked right into Ryan Malone once, who for some reason was in Penn's Station (the gift shop, not the actual train station) and all I could think of saying was "Watch where you're going." I didn't put two and two together until afterwards. I have this image of him walking away from it with his head down, sobbing gently under the muffled words of "No one likes me..."

Add em in then. I'll toss Lalime in too, but more towards the bottom. I'll consider that when I look to finalize it.

Wasn't some guy named Trottier pretty good? I remember a hilarious Youtube clip of him mouthing off at some dude from Minnesota.

C'mon, you can't put Trottier there. That goes to my earlier question about whether they had to be good on the Penguins. Trottier was more than done by the time he joined the Pens. He had 9/11/4 goals in his three season in pittsburgh and 28/29/15 in terms of points. Trottier was a hall of fame player, but not with the Pens.

I could be wrong here, but didn't he make the all-star game as a penguin the year the Pens had 5 players in the All-star game.

I think that was Borque, Coffey, Lemieux, Jagr and Stevens. Roy was the goalie, I know that.

I don't think he did, but if he did it was a sentimental pick. Not too many guys make the all-start team when their total output for the season is less than 30 points.

I would put Trotts on the all-time Islanders team but not the Penguin team. Although he did make significant contributions to the Penguins in the Cup years his main production both points and Cups came with the Islanders.
