Alex Rodriguez to Get $314 Million?

by AllBalls

Alex Rodriguez, still negotiating his potential deal with the New York Yankees, is essentially guaranteed to rake in a ton of cash next season. Their current deal on the table has the potential of reaching $314 Million dollars. Must there be further evidence provided to prove that the sports world is corrupted?

Scott Boras and A-Rod have outlined a deal over ten years that will offer the 32-year old slugger $270 Million in guaranteed cash, and then $30 Million for homerun incentives, excluding the $9 Million paid off by the Texas Rangers from his previous contracts. The Yankees could go with a cheaper alternative by acquiring Miguel Cabrera from the Marlins, but I guess that their wealthy organization would rather fork over their entire wallet for this expensive third-baseman than jumping into the trade market.

Does Alex Rodriguez need $30 Million in incentives? I'm sure that most players would be self-motivated to play baseball even if they were not paid such a large sum of money. Although the Yankees are backed with tons of cash, I'm sure that this component of their future deal is not exactly "pocket change."

Major League Baseball actually bans teams from offering bonuses for statistical records, but they made an exception for the New York Yankees. They claim that their law does not prohibit additional cash awarded for achieving "historical milestones." I'd like to know exactly what is considered a "historical milestone." This peculiar exception seems a bit fishy.

This deal is currently on the drawing board, but it is very close to being finalized. Alex Rodriguez's outrageous salary will only provide journalists with more ammunition for criticism, when the three-time MVP does not produce exceptional numbers during the post-season. This is purely an example of how you "can't have your 'expensive' cake, and eat it too."
