Born on August 7, 1864 in Westfield, Massachusetts, Adonis Terry (William H. Terry) played for the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers, Brooklyn Bridegrooms, Pittsburgh Pirates, Baltimore Orioles and Chicago Colts over the course of his 14 year career. Terry broke into the bigs on May 1, 1884 with the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers, and put up a 3.55 ERA in 476 innings pitched in 1884, his rookie year.

There is some disagreement on what was Adonis Terry's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1890, when he posted a 2.94 ERA, won 26 games and struck out 185 batters. However, others believe that it was 1884, when he posted a 3.55 ERA, won 19 games and struck out 230 batters.
