A Look at Bill Stoneman's future in Anaheim

Could 2007 be Bill Stoneman's last year in Anaheim?
Could 2007 be Bill Stoneman's last year in Anaheim?

Bill Stoneman could be on his way out. I have no proof or inside knowledge of this, just speculation. He has hinted at possibly retiring or stepping down into a smaller role. His contract expires at the end of this season, which will mark a crucial time for the Angels. They have three options.

Option A, the simplist one, is that Stoneman could sign a new deal to remain as the General Manager. Only Arte Moreno can grant this option.

Option B is that he could move to a consulting role. This would allow Moreno to hire a younger GM in the mold of Theo Epstein or Brian Cashman. That would allow the new GM to grow into the job with Stoneman by his side. Stoneman's conservative attitude could keep the young guy in check. We don't want another Paul DePodesta here in Anaheim.

Option C is that he would leave the leaving the organization. If Stoneman does leave, I think Moreno would be more inclined to hire an experienced GM in the mold of a Ned Colletti. But even if Stoneman does leave the team, don't rule out the possibility of Moreno going with a younger GM who clearly displays creativity and vision.

Final Verdict: Moreno will most likely look to sign Stoneman to a new deal if he is willing to return. However, he has hinted at possibly stepping down. If Stoneman does decide to step down, look for him to remain in the front office as a consultant. Hey, why not decide to retire in beautiful Southern California, while still remaining on the payroll. Option B is the most likely one.

I have hard time believing Bill Stoneman would retire. The guy is a great GM.

Didn't the Angels win the World Series just a few short years ago? Wow, folks do have short re-collections....

No, it was a few long years ago... not short years (2004 was a leap year)

Form the standpoint of an outsider (non-Angels fan), the problem is not Stoneman, but Arte Moreno. First, he's an absentee owner. Both his business and residences are in Phoenix, he makes appearances at Angels home games during the season but is MIA during the off-season. Second, he has a big mouth, albeit with good intentions. When you stand in front of your season ticket holders at the end of the season party and promise the Angels will acquire a "marquee" player during the off-season, and only deliver Gary Matthews Jr and Shay Hillenbrand.......It's understandable why everyone is pissed off and season ticket renewals are down 15%. The Angels were actively TALKING to teams about trades..ARod, Tejada, Helton, and also with free agents, Soriano, Konerko, but it takes the owner to agree to the financials of the deal, not the GM. Stoneman's a good GM, but he needs the support of ownership to upgrade the team, relying on an occasional mid-level free agent signing or minor league call-up to carry the team is unrealistic.

Stoneman wasn't a bad pitcher either. Had a lousy W/L record but he played for a really bad (expansion) Montreal Expos team. Actually threw 2 no-hitters, the first in the third game in Expos history.
